Book excerpt: In the association of the bee and the flower is a very advanced reflection of the process of evolution through natural selection. Nature's Holism explores the coevolution of long associated species arriving at a holistic view of nature where the compatibility between species is significant. In nature there are two interacting forces. There is the numerical increase in numbers of a species, termed a force of "perpetuity". Increasing numbers of a single species have an inevitable impact on the environment. However, as each species survives within an ecological context, there is a feedback from the ecosystem as numbers increase, requiring a necessary compatibility with the ecosystem. "Fitness" is therefore defined, not only by quantitative representation of genes in the next generation (perpetuity), but also the qualitative condition of compatibility with the habitat or ecosystem that provided the conditions and resources for this success.

  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Holism written by Christian McMillan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holism: Possibilities and Problems brings together leading contributors in a ground-breaking discussion of holism. The terms ‘holism’ and ‘holistic’ arouse strong emotional responses in contemporary culture, whether this be negative or positive, and the essays in this interdisciplinary collection probe, each in its own way, the possibilities and problems inherent in thinking holistically. Christian McMillan, Roderick Main and David Henderson bring together established academics and emerging scholars across subject areas and disciplinary approaches to reveal the multiplicity and complexity of issues involved in holism. Divided into four parts, the chapters determine key strands of thinking explicitly or implicitly underpinning contemporary holistic thought, including what ethical conclusions might most reasonably be drawn from such thought. Accessible and diverse, this extensive volume contains chapters from the perspective of history, ecology, psychotherapy, poetry, mythology, and an especially strong representation of continental philosophy and Jungian depth psychology. Due to its multi-disciplinary nature, the book represents an unparalleled discussion of the meanings and implications of holism. Written by an innovative and international calibre of contributors, this pioneering collection will be essential reading for practitioners in depth psychology and scholars of Jungian studies, as well as academics and students of philosophy, religious studies, spirituality, history and the history of ideas. The book is a rich resource for the enhancement of critical reflection among all those with an interest in holism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the fortieth anniversary of the UK’s Science and Religion Forum by bringing together leading scientific and theological thinkers to reflect on the last four decades of the science-theology conversation and to chart new directions for its future. Through an engagement with some of the most recent developments in the sciences as diverse as quantum holism, theories of emergence, technology studies, and the sociology of religion, the book explores a broad range of pressing theological questions, such as: What is religion? What does it mean to be human? How can theology best respond to the ecological crisis? In addressing these questions, and many more, the contributors to this volume forge innovative models for the interrelation of science and religion, making this book a timely and valuable resource for all those interested in the future of the science-theology conversation.

Book What Holism Can Do for Social Theory

Download or read book What Holism Can Do for Social Theory written by Barbara Hanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconsiders the nature of positivist philosophy in social science theory based on classical and medieval thought in what later became "Europe." It argues that social theory is being held back by antagonistic debates over science, positivism, objectivity, and universal law - debates which appear unnecessary, narrow, and acontextual when their origins are examined. Positing that solutions to these impasses can be found by moving to alternative holistic epistemology, and looking at issues in terms of interrelations rather than parts, the book shows the promise of a social theory that provides a unit of analysis that mediates between local and global relations.

Book Experiments in Holism

Download or read book Experiments in Holism written by Ton Otto and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments in Holism Experiments in Holism: Theory and Practice in Contemporary Anthropology presents a series of essays that critically examine the ongoing relevance of holism and its theoretical and methodological potential in today’s world. Contributions from a diverse collection of leading anthropologists reveal how recent critiques of the holistic approach have not led to its wholesale rejection, but rather to a panoply of experiments that critically reassess and reemploy holism. The essays focus on aspects of holism including its utilization in current ethnographic research, holistic considerations in cultural anthropology, the French structuralist tradition, the predominantly English tradition of social anthropology, and many others. Collectively, the essays show how holism is simultaneously central to, and problematically a part of, the theory and practice of anthropology. Experiments in Holism reveals how contemporary attempts to rescale and retool anthropology entail new ways of coming to terms with anthropology’s heritage of holism, seeking to obviate its current excesses while recapturing its critical potential to meet the challenges of our contemporary world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The holistic thesis developed by Pierre Duhem challenges the idea that our evidence can conclusively falsify a theory. Given that no scientific theory is tested in isolation, a negative experiment can always be attributed to components other than the theory we test – to the auxiliary hypotheses and background assumptions. How do scientists decide whether the experimental result undermines the theory or points at an error in the underlying assumptions? Duhem argues that we cannot offer a rule that directs when the scientist should employ a radical or conservative strategy in light of a negative result, and ultimately they will appeal to their intuition. More recently philosophers have offered a number of strategies of how to locate error and justify the abandonment of a theory or an auxiliary hypothesis. This Element analyses Duhem's response to holism and subsequent accounts of how the problem can be resolved.

Book Holism and Complementary Medicine

Download or read book Holism and Complementary Medicine written by Vincent Di Stefano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The return to holistic therapies is one of the most important developments in health over the past two decades. With preventative medicine being taken more seriously by conventional health practitioners, and the increasing popularity of natural and complementary therapies among consumers, it is clear that a holistic approach will be integral to health care in the future. Holism and Complementary Medicine offers a systematic overview of traditional healing practices, the development of the Western biomedical model from the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to the present, and the holistic philosophy which is the basis of complementary and alternative medicine in the West. The book explores the differences between holistic and conventional biomedical traditions and approaches, acknowledging the strengths of each. It also addresses key practice issues, examining the role holistic principles have to play in today's health system and explaining their place in the therapeutic relationship. Holism and Complementary Medicine is an accessible guide for students, practitioners and anyone interested in the origins and core principles of natural therapies. 'This scholarly exploration of the conceptual evolution of holistic medicine is a fascinating read. Di Stefano is to be congratulated for his articulate insights into healing relationships and how our health paradigms enhance or inhibit our understanding of health and disease.' - Joseph Pizzorno, ND, President Emeritus, Bastyr University 'This is a magnificent read for students of natural and complementary medicine, as well as health professionals and lay public who have often wondered where the movement towards holism in medicine began and is headed.' - Paul Orrock, Head of the School of Natural and Complementary Medicine, Southern Cross University '. . . brings together many threads that link the health of body, mind and society, drawing richly from a larger corpus of intellectual inquiry into history, philosophy, and human endeavor, including clinical medicine.' - Bruce Barrett MD PhD, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, University of Wisconsin, Madison

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holistic, /həʊˈlɪstɪk, hɒˈlɪstɪk/, adjective: "characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole." This is the journal I always looked for and wanted, but could never find. I started realizing how little I knew about my natural environment and wanted to create a journal that helps combat what I feel a lot of us are challenged with today. I needed a journal that not only served as an outlet, but also provided easy access to information that has increasingly slipped out of our radar. How convenient would it be to have a beautiful, simple journal that lets us get back in touch with nature? The first edition of this book concern itself with seasonal produce as observed in the United States, though arguably it can be applied to countries with similar climates too. To sum, it includes: Lists of seasonal produce for the four season Three diagrams to help you identify some common plants and flowers Information on Lunar Gardening A Lunar Calendar for 2022 As we become increasingly more aware of how we consume, and what we consume, I felt like this is exactly the kind of journal we need. A part of me hopes and wishes that this journal will allow for some of us to rekindle our connection to nature, and encourage us to treat it better, as we come to understand her more. As Henry David Thoreau said: "Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth." If the journal serves you in any way, no matter how small, I can rest assured that my efforts were fruitful. That is all that really matters to me. Peace and love, S.
