Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By making room for this book in your curriculum, you' ll have a fresh way to motivate your students to look at the living world and ask not only " Why?" but also " How do we know?" Unique in both its structure and approach, Reading Nature is a supplemental resource that provides a window into science ideas and practices. You' ll find the book useful because it * Draws on carefully selected peer-reviewed articles so that students have an opportunity for text-based inquiry into scientific investigations. Each of these evidence-based texts ties into one of five disciplinary core ideas in the Next Generation Science Standards-- from molecules to organisms, ecosystems, heredity, biological evolution, and human impacts on Earth systems. * Is organized to make the source material easy for students to grasp and for you to teach. Within each of the book' s five chapters, the authors have framed section headings as questions; highlighted the roles of people in the narrative; offered context and relevant data for the investigations; and provided supplementary teacher questions and prompts. * Can be adapted to your needs as an active tool for inquiry. You may use the various texts in the book to introduce a unit or an investigation or to pull ideas together before a summative assessment. The texts are also useful as extensions of existing ideas. Unlike traditional textbooks, Reading Nature makes it clear that biology is much more than dry facts and complicated vocabulary. It can help you prompt students to think deeply about the " endeavor of science" as it truly is-- full of ingenious experiments, frustrating dead ends, and incredible finds that contribute to our understanding of the amazing phenomena of living things.

Book Chance in Biology

  • Author : Mark Denny
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book Chance in Biology written by Mark Denny and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is a chancy proposition: from the movement of molecules to the age at which we die, chance plays a key role in the natural world. Traditionally, biologists have viewed the inevitable "noise" of life as an unfortunate complication. The authors of this book, however, treat random processes as a benefit. In this introduction to chance in biology, Mark Denny and Steven Gaines help readers to apply the probability theory needed to make sense of chance events--using examples from ocean waves to spiderwebs, in fields ranging from molecular mechanics to evolution. Through the application of probability theory, Denny and Gaines make predictions about how plants and animals work in a stochastic universe. Is it possible to pack a variety of ion channels into a cell membrane and have each operate at near-peak flow? Why are our arteries rubbery? The concept of a random walk provides the necessary insight. Is there an absolute upper limit to human life span? Could the sound of a cocktail party burst your eardrums? The statistics of extremes allows us to make the appropriate calculations. How long must you wait to see the detail in a moonlit landscape? Can you hear the noise of individual molecules? The authors provide answers to these and many other questions. After an introduction to the basic statistical methods to be used in this book, the authors emphasize the application of probability theory to biology rather than the details of the theory itself. Readers with an introductory background in calculus will be able to follow the reasoning, and sets of problems, together with their solutions, are offered to reinforce concepts. The use of real-world examples, numerous illustrations, and chapter summaries--all presented with clarity and wit--make for a highly accessible text. By relating the theory of probability to the understanding of form and function in living things, the authors seek to pique the reader's curiosity about statistics and provide a new perspective on the role of chance in biology.

Book On Human Nature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan H. Turner
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-11-24
  • ISBN : 1000213757
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book On Human Nature written by Jonathan H. Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jonathan H. Turner combines sociology, evolutionary biology, cladistic analysis from biology, and comparative neuroanatomy to examine human nature as inherited from common ancestors shared by humans and present-day great apes. Selection pressures altered this inherited legacy for the ancestors of humans—termed hominins for being bipedal—and forced greater organization than extant great apes when the hominins moved into open-country terrestrial habitats. The effects of these selection pressures increased hominin ancestors’ emotional capacities through greater social and group orientation. This shift, in turn, enabled further selection for a larger brain, articulated speech, and culture along the human line. Turner elaborates human nature as a series of overlapping complexes that are the outcome of the inherited legacy of great apes being fed through the transforming effects of a larger brain, speech, and culture. These complexes, he shows, can be understood as the cognitive complex, the psychological complex, the emotions complex, the interaction complex, and the community complex.

  • Author : Michel Tibayrenc
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2016-09-12

Download or read book On Human Nature written by Michel Tibayrenc and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Human Nature: Biology, Psychology, Ethics, Politics, and Religion covers the present state of knowledge on human diversity and its adaptative significance through a broad and eclectic selection of representative chapters. This transdisciplinary work brings together specialists from various fields who rarely interact, including geneticists, evolutionists, physicians, ethologists, psychoanalysts, anthropologists, sociologists, theologians, historians, linguists, and philosophers. Genomic diversity is covered in several chapters dealing with biology, including the differences in men and apes and the genetic diversity of mankind. Top specialists, known for their open mind and broad knowledge have been carefully selected to cover each topic. The book is therefore at the crossroads between biology and human sciences, going beyond classical science in the Popperian sense. The book is accessible not only to specialists, but also to students, professors, and the educated public. Glossaries of specialized terms and general public references help nonspecialists understand complex notions, with contributions avoiding technical jargon. Provides greater understanding of diversity and population structure and history, with crucial foundational knowledge needed to conduct research in a variety of fields, such as genetics and disease Includes three robust sections on biological, psychological, and ethical aspects, with cross-fertilization and reciprocal references between the three sections Contains contributions by leading experts in their respective fields working under the guidance of internationally recognized and highly respected editors

Book Classification Evolution and the Nature of Biology

Download or read book Classification Evolution and the Nature of Biology written by Alec L. Panchen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-06-26 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, naturalists who proposed theories of evolution, including Darwin and Wallace, did so in order to explain the apparent relationship of natural classification. This book begins by exploring the intimate historical relationship between patterns of classification and patterns of phylogeny. However, it is a circular argument to use the data for classification. Alec Panchen presents other evidence for evolution in the form of a historically based but rigorously logical argument. This is followed by a history of methods of classification and phylogeny reconstruction including current mathematical and molecular techniques. The author makes the important claim that if the hierarchical pattern of classification is a real phenomenon, then biology is unique as a science in making taxonomic statements. This conclusion is reached by way of historical reviews of theories of evolutionary mechanism and the philosophy of science as applied to biology. The book is addressed to biologists, particularly taxonomists, concerned with the history and philosophy of their subject, and to philosophers of science concerned with biology. It is also an important source book on methods of classification and the logic of evolutionary theory for students, professional biologists, and paleontologists.

Book Digital Biology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter J. Bentley
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2010-05-11
  • ISBN : 0743238168
  • Pages : 407 pages

Download or read book Digital Biology written by Peter J. Bentley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a future world where computers can create universes -- digital environments made from binary ones and zeros. Imagine that within these universes there exist biological forms that reproduce, grow, and think. Imagine plantlike forms, ant colonies, immune systems, and brains, all adapting, evolving, and getting better at solving problems. Imagine if our computers became greenhouses for a new kind of nature. Just think what digital biology could do for us. Perhaps it could evolve new designs for us, think up ways to detect fraud using digital neurons, or solve scheduling problems with ants. Perhaps it could detect hackers with immune systems or create music from the patterns of growth of digital seashells. Perhaps it would allow our computers to become creative and inventive. Now stop imagining. digital biology is an intriguing glimpse into the future of technology by one of the most creative thinkers working in computer science today. As Peter J. Bentley explains, the next giant step in computing technology is already under way as computer scientists attempt to create digital universes that replicate the natural world. Within these digital universes, we will evolve solutions to problems, construct digital brains that can learn and think, and use immune systems to trap and destroy computer viruses. The biological world is the model for the next generation of computer software. By adapting the principles of biology, computer scientists will make it possible for computers to function as the natural world does. In practical terms, this will mean that we will soon have "smart" devices, such as houses that will keep the temperature as we like it and automobiles that will start only for drivers they recognize (through voice recognition or other systems) and that will navigate highways safely and with maximum fuel efficiency. Computers will soon be powerful enough and small enough that they can become part of clothing. "Digital agents" will be able to help us find a bank or restaurant in a city that we have never visited before, even as we walk through the airport. Miniature robots may even be incorporated into our bodies to monitor our health. Digital Biology is also an exploration of biology itself from a new perspective. We must understand how nature works in its most intimate detail before we can use these same biological processes inside our computers. Already scientists engaged in this work have gained new insights into the elegant simplicity of the natural universe. This is a visionary book, written in accessible, nontechnical language, that explains how cutting-edge computer science will shape our world in the coming decades.
