He is forced to leave his home and travel to the distant city of Helioport, where the Archmages of the College of Collective Magicks will teach him how to use his powers. Accompanied by his guardian and his best friends, Gaspi sets off on the long journey to Helioport. The journey is fraught with danger, and Gaspi and his friends discover that there are demonic creatures abroad, intent on finding and killing anyone with magical ability. As Gaspi begins his magical studies, a shadow hangs over him and over the city of magicians. Gaspi's story of a demonic attack is not an isolated incident. As these stories increase, Hephistole, the Chancellor of the college, is growing increasingly certain that someone or something is directing the demonic forces, but who, and to what end? Satrine Rainey—former street rat, ex-spy, mother of two, and wife to a Constabulary Inspector who lies on the edge of death, injured in the line of duty—has been forced to fake her way into the post of Constabulary Inspector to support her family. Minox Welling is a brilliant, unorthodox Inspector and an Uncircled mage—almost a crime in itself. Nicknamed “the jinx” because of the misfortunes that seem to befall anyone around him, Minox has been partnered with Satrine because no one else will work with either of them. Their first case together—the ritual murder of a Circled mage— sends Satrine back to the streets she grew up on and brings Minox face-to-face with mage politics he’s desperate to avoid. Book Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology

Download or read book Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology written by R. Reisfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series was originally entitled Contemporary Topics in Immunochemistry, and Volume 1 bearing that name was published. Upon its editorial review and while charting the development of future volumes, the editors began to sense that the word "Immunochemistry" was somewhat restrictive according to its present interpretation. Accompanying the expansion of knowledge in immuno biology is a demand for explanations in molecular terms. Since the intent of the series is to focus attention on research at the molecular level in any aspect of immunology, the editors and publisher felt the term "Immunochemistry" should be replaced with "Molecular Immunology." Thus, the series now bears a revised appellation, Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology. The editors feel this more accurately reflects the intended breath of the series. An apology is offered to writers, librarians, and other catalogers for the inconvenience this change will cause. F. P. Inman General Editor Athens, Georgia March,1973 vii Preface The earliest explorers into immunology were at once confronted by myriad molecular riddles which became increasingly complex as immunochemical tech niques resolved one question only to raise scores of others. Even as our knowledge of cellular immunology was growing remarkably fast, during the past two decades exciting experiments delineated the molecular structure of immuno globulins. These joint advances not only shaped the Gestalt of present-day immunology, but paved the way for an incisive molecular approach to the challenges of research.

Book The Impulse of Fantasy Literature

Download or read book The Impulse of Fantasy Literature written by Colin N. Manlove and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of the author's wish to go beyond a formal definition of fantasy to discover a basic urge and interest common to the genre. He finds this urge to be the celebration of identity. Fantasy is ultimately concerned to heighten and praise being, whether that being is God's creation, the world, or the creations of the fantasy writer themselves. This interest can take the form of direct eulogy or of more unconscious fascination. It is seen in fantasy's conservatism and its frequently elegiac mode, and is demonstrated through its formal characteristics such as circular structure and the use of juxtaposition to heighten individuality. It is more overtly present in modern than in pre-1800 fantasy, partly because modern fantasy developed as a Romantic reaction against technology and everything that reduced direct contact between people and the environment. These aspects of fantasy are illustrated from detailed discussion of the tales of Grimm, Walter de la Mare's Told Again, W. M. Thackeray's The Rose and the Ring, Charles Williams's prose fantasies, Ursula le Guin's Earthsea trilogy, E. Nesbit's magic books, George MacDonald's Phantastes and Lilith, T. H. White's The Once and Future King, Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast novels, William Morris's late romances, Lord Dunsany's The King of Elfland's Daughter, E. R. Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros, and Peter Beagle's The Last Unicorn. Together these authors and works provide a cross-section of what is a fundamentally panegyric genre demonstrating its variety, its strengths, and its limitations.
