Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naturalistic Photography for Students of the Art Let us see what this cool young goddess, born of art and science, has been doing these fifty years. In the fields Of science she has been most busy. She has been giving us photographs 'of the moon, the stars, and even of the nebula. She.ba's recorded eclipses and a transit of Venus for us; She has drawn, too, the sun's corona, and registered those great volcanic explosions that take place there periodically. She has shown us that there are stars which no tele scope can find, and she has in another form registered for us the composition of the sun and of many of the planets; and now she 1s busy mapping out the heavens. Like an all powerful goddess, she plays with the planets and records on our plates, with delicate taps, the constellations. She runs through the vast space of the kosmos doing our biddings with a precision and delicacy never equalled - in short she is fast becoming the right hand of the astronomer. Book Peter Henry Emerson and American Naturalistic Photography

Download or read book Peter Henry Emerson and American Naturalistic Photography written by Christian A. Peterson and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Henry Emerson (1856-1936) was a leading English photographer who spearheaded a style he termed "naturalistic photography." He argued for photography as a fine art, encouraged his colleagues to use nature as their standard, and introduced the theory of "differential focusing," whereby the main subject was in focus and everything else fell into moderate softness. Many young Americans admired Emerson's work, forming a movement of naturalistic photography in this country that lasted from the 1890s to about 1930. Like Emerson, they emphasized the beauty of Mother Nature and humankind's harmony with her, photographing the land in all its seasons. Among the photographers whose work is included are Edward Curtis, Rudolf Eickemeyer, Alfred Stieglitz, and Doris Ulman.

Download or read book On Photography written by Diarmuid Costello and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is photography? Is it a source of knowledge or an art? Many have said the former because it records the world automatically, others the latter because it expresses human subjectivity. Can photography be both or must we choose? In On Photography: A Philosophical Inquiry, Diarmuid Costello examines these fascinating questions and more, drawing on images by Alfred Stieglitz, Berenice Abbott, Paul Strand, Lee Friedlander, James Welling, and Wolfgang Tillmans, among others, and the writings of Elizabeth Eastlake, Peter Henry Emerson, Edward Weston, Siegfried Kracauer, André Bazin, and Stanley Cavell. This sets the scene for the contemporary stand-off between "sceptical" and "non-sceptical" Orthodoxy in the work of Roger Scruton and Kendall Walton, and a New Theory of Photography taking its cue from László Moholy-Nagy and Patrick Maynard. Written in a clear and engaging style, On Photography is essential reading for anyone interested in the philosophy of photography, aesthetics, art, and visual studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Nature and a Camera: Being the Adventures and Observations of a Field Naturalist and an Animal Photographer Upon the appearance of my book - "British Bird's Nests" - illustrated with photographs taken direct from Nature by my brother, many of those who reviewed it in the press suggested that I should write an account of our adventures and observations whilst wandering up and down the British Isles in search of subjects for our camera and note-book. This I have done, and herein present the result for the inspection and perusal of everybody who cares to know anything about the wild life of our country. In preparing the book we have gleaned from many remote corners of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and the different groups of islands lying round about; and whether we have harvested ill or well we must, of course, leave our readers to judge. But whatever may be their verdict, I hope it is permissible for me to say here that we have worked hard and honestly, sparing no pains, danger, or expense in procuring what we considered interesting or instructive.
