Book Naturalistic Occultism An Introduction to Scientific Illuminism

Download or read book Naturalistic Occultism An Introduction to Scientific Illuminism written by IAO131 and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naturalistic Occultism: An Introduction to Scientific Illuminism is an attempt to introduce the approach of Scientific Illuminism to occultism. It is in line with the motto of Scientific Illuminism, "The Method of Science, the Aim of Religion." Naturalistic Occultism approaches the theory and practice of occultism in a way that is scientific (using the scientific method and being up-to-date in current scientific knowledge), naturalistic (not supernatural), and pragmatic (whatever works is provisionally 'true'). This book represents an honest attempt to separate the gold of the practice of magick from the dross of superstition and dogma.

Book The Problem of Disenchantment

Download or read book The Problem of Disenchantment written by Egil Asprem and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges the conventional view of a “disenchanted” and secular modernity, and recovers the complex relation that exists between science, religion, and esotericism in the modern world. Max Weber famously characterized the ongoing process of intellectualization and rationalization that separates the natural world from the divine (by excluding magic and value from the realm of science, and reason and fact from the realm of religion) as the “disenchantment of the world.” Egil Asprem argues for a conceptual shift in how we view this key narrative of modernity. Instead of a sociohistorical process of disenchantment that produces increasingly rational minds, Asprem maintains that the continued presence of “magic” and “enchantment” in people’s everyday experience of the world created an intellectual problem for those few who were socialized to believe that nature should contain no such incalculable mysteries. Drawing on a wide range of early twentieth-century primary sources from theoretical physics, occultism, embryology, radioactivity, psychical research, and other fields, Asprem casts the intellectual life of high modernity as a synchronic struggle across conspicuously different fields that shared surprisingly similar intellectual problems about value, meaning, and the limits of knowledge. “The Problem of Disenchantment is, in its entirety, extraordinarily well researched, argued, and written—representing at once the most complete and nuanced treatment of the notion of disenchantment within this network of scientific, religious, philosophical, and esoteric discourses and currents.” — Nova Religio

Book HRILIU Symbolic Explorations of the Gnostic Mass

Download or read book HRILIU Symbolic Explorations of the Gnostic Mass written by IAO131 and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-04-23 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'HRILIU: Symbolic Explorations of the Gnostic Mass' is an in-depth look at the central ritual of Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.). The first half of the book gives a general overview of the Gnostic Mass from several different perspectives, including an examination of the basic symbols at work in the mass, the Officers, magical energy, and how Baphomet might play a major factor... The second half of the book is a detailed analysis of the rubric of Liber XV: Ecclesiae Gnosticae Catholicae Canon Missae, the ritual text of the Gnostic Mass itself. IAO131 goes line by line through the text and goes into symbolic aspects of every part of the Gnostic Mass. The book takes its title 'HRILIU' from the climax of this ritual, when the Priest and Priestess simultaneously utter this angelic word in rapturous communion. Overall, this tome comes in at almost 400 pages of symbolic and Qabalistic exploration of this beautiful and sacred Rite."

Book Fire in the Minds of Men

    Book Details:
  • Author : James H. Billington
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 1999

Download or read book Fire in the Minds of Men written by James H. Billington and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the origins of a faith--perhaps the faith of the century. Modern revolutionaries are believers, no less committed and intense than were Christians or Muslims of an earlier era. What is new is the belief that a perfect secular order will emerge from forcible overthrow of traditional authority. This inherently implausible idea energized Europe in the nineteenth century, and became the most pronounced ideological export of the West to the rest of the world in the twentieth century. Billington is interested in revolutionaries--the innovative creators of a new tradition. His historical frame extends from the waning of the French Revolution in the late eighteenth century to the beginnings of the Russian Revolution in the early twentieth century. The theater was Europe of the industrial era; the main stage was the journalistic offices within great cities such as Paris, Berlin, London, and St. Petersburg. Billington claims with considerable evidence that revolutionary ideologies were shaped as much by the occultism and proto-romanticism of Germany as the critical rationalism of the French Enlightenment. The conversion of social theory to political practice was essentially the work of three Russian revolutions: in 1905, March 1917, and November 1917. Events in the outer rim of the European world brought discussions about revolution out of the school rooms and press rooms of Paris and Berlin into the halls of power. Despite his hard realism about the adverse practical consequences of revolutionary dogma, Billington appreciates the identity of its best sponsors, people who preached social justice transcending traditional national, ethnic, and gender boundaries. When this book originally appeared The New Republic hailed it as "remarkable, learned and lively," while The New Yorker noted that Billington "pays great attention to the lives and emotions of individuals and this makes his book absorbing." It is an invaluable work of history and contribution to our understanding of political life.
