Book Blown Away and Back Again

Download or read book Blown Away and Back Again written by Hannah Bent and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blown Away And Back Again finds Hannah Bent dodging traffic and sadhus in Kathmandu; chatting with political exiles in Ilam; sleeping with feral dogs in India's Thar Desert (on vacation no less) and hiking up to Lo Monthang, one of Nepal's most storied and secluded villages in the Upper Mustang region. But in addition to her often unexpected exploits, this book also provides a glimpse into the everyday lives of the people and nation of Nepal, a country so far removed from the First World problems we face in America, yet on the verge of a modernization that will drastically affect the way most people live, work, and think. As Bent shows, while we may commonly think of Nepal as some sort of idyllic "Shangri La" or "lost, forgotten kingdom," the real Nepal is actually quite the opposite, although no less mystifying.

Book British India s Relations with the Kingdom of Nepal 1857 1947

Download or read book British India s Relations with the Kingdom of Nepal 1857 1947 written by Asad Husain and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British India's Relations with the Kingdom of Nepal (1970) uses original documents and confidential papers never before available to examine the relations between Nepal and British India from 1857 to 1947. Though relations between the two countries were generally friendly, they occasionally clashed when Nepal felt that its independence and indigenous way of life was threatened. Although Nepal customarily followed policies which appeared to be harmonious with those of Great Britain, Professor Husain shows that its policies were usually based on self-interest and, contrary to traditional thinking, Nepal was a nation largely independent of British control.

Book excerpt: The author is a native of the West Coast in the United States, getting a start in life in the San Francisco Bay Area. His early years included a multitude of outdoor activities including fishing, mountaineering, rock climbing, and years of work with the National Park Service as a backcountry ranger. Ever since receiving a master’s degree in biology in the 1970s, the author has been heavily involved with the commercial fishing industry, primarily in Alaska. Along the way, however, his career in fisheries has allowed him to accept long-term overseas work assignments in the Soviet Union, the Sultanate of Oman, and in India. In 1979, the author again packed his well-used rucksack and headed off to Nepal and India where, in part, he completed a trek through the Himalayan highlands in the same areas largely described in this book. It was there in those oxygen-deprived mountain valleys that the author first laid plans to write a book whose main character would ultimately be Rishi as described in the present book. The author found himself continuously asking the question, “What would happen if a new age Messiah would visit the earth today?” And more interestingly, the author queried himself, “What would happen if that modern-day Messiah was neither white nor Christian?” This book, Rishi - the Misunderstood Messiah, attempts to provide one potential answer as to what could take place under the above scenario.
