Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals a remarkable oddity about the mainstream philosophy of science. While rejecting a noxious relativism, it is unable to ascribe "truth" to scientific theories that also are divorced conceptually from ethics and politics. There is much at stake since these dilemmas have led to a politicized truth whereby "truth" in these areas is often decided ideologically. But the ideology and splintered areas collide head-on with our awareness of ourselves and the world. By relating a world of which we are phenomenologically conscious to a common-sense reasoning, a novel case is made for objective scientific truth, a true causal principle, and the principle's implication of a First Cause. This Cause, as a Creator of Nature, begets moral norms intrinsic to scientific descriptions of our psycho-biological nature since our nature was created as it ought to be; affording a naturalistic ethics that can be as true as the science that informs it. Medicine and its allied sciences are used to illustrate this moral import in terms of a revitalized support of the traditional family -- a perennial norm expressed by the dictum "As the family goes, so goes the state." Thus a state's support of the family exemplifies how normative political claims can be as true as a scientific ethics that informs them. The logical link of ethics to science and politics marks the reasoning implicit in a natural theology common to the major monotheistic religions. And so despite the faults of all organizations, this book suggests one reason why those religions flourished over the ages. Outlasting the Roman Empire and modern ideologies that boasted vainly of reigning to the end of history, the religions address a personal spirituality and fulfill human nature. They render coherent an experienced world where truth coincides in science, ethics, politics, and religion. REVIEW "This book is one of those exceptional works which is both challenging in its philosophical sophistication and edifying in its moral argumentation." Book The Theological Education of the Ministry

Download or read book The Theological Education of the Ministry written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-10 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unwilling on conscientious grounds to submit to the religious tests imposed by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the English and Welsh Dissenters of the second half of the seventeenth century established academies in which their young men, many of them destined for the ministry, might receive a higher education. From the eighteenth century onwards, theological colleges devoted exclusively to ministerial education were founded, while in Scotland historically, and in England and Wales over the past 120 years, freestanding university faculties of divinity/theology have provided theological education to ordinands and others. These diverse educational contexts are all represented in this collection of papers, but the focus is upon those who taught in them: Caleb Ashworth (Daventry Academy); John Oman (Westminster [Presbyterian] College Cambridge); N. H. G. Robinson (University of St. Andrews); Geoffrey F. Nuttall (New [Congregational] College, London); T. W. Manson (University of Manchester); Owen Evans (University of Manchester and Hartley Victoria Methodist College)--the lone Methodist scholar discussed here; and W. Gordon Robinson and J. H. Eric Hull (University of Manchester and Lancashire Independent College). Between them these scholars covered the core disciplines of theological education: biblical studies, ecclesiastical history, philosophy, doctrine, and systematic theology.

Book Investigation into the Clarity of the Principles of Natural Theology and Morality

Download or read book Investigation into the Clarity of the Principles of Natural Theology and Morality written by Immanuel Kant and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2024 translation of "Investigation into the clarity of the principles of natural theology and morality" from the original German manuscript first published in 1764. The original German title is "Untersuchung über die Deutlichkeit der Grundsätze der natürlichen Theologie und der Moral". This new edition contains an afterword by the translator, a timeline of Kant's life and works, and a helpful index of Kant's key concepts and intellectual rivals. This translation is designed for readability, rendering Kant's enigmatic German into the simplest equivalent possible, and removing the academic footnotes to make this critically important historical text as accessible as possible to the modern reader. The first section sets the basic context for the inquiry by asserting the importance of distinguishing between mathematical and philosophical certainty. This distinction is crucial to understanding the nature of knowledge in both natural theology and morality, Kant argues. He then proceeds to analyze the nature of metaphysical certainty, emphasizing the differences between philosophical and mathematical reasoning. This analysis provides a framework for understanding the principles of natural theology and morality, highlighting the complexities and nuances involved in philosophical reasoning compared to the more concrete and defined realm of mathematics. In subsequent parts of the treatise, the nature of metaphysical certainty is explored in depth, focusing on the principles of natural theology. The discussion includes an examination of concepts such as existence, necessity, and the attributes of a divine being, providing a philosophical foundation for arguments about the existence and nature of God. The final sections of the book are devoted to morality, analyzing the principles that underlie moral reasoning and obligation. Kant examines the conceptual foundations of moral obligations, the nature of ethical principles, and the relationship between moral philosophy and practical decision making.
