Book excerpt: In this challenging book, Ted Benton takes recent debates about the moral status of animals as a basis for reviewing the discourse of "human rights." Liberal-individualist views of human rights and advocates of animal rights tend to think of individuals, whether human or animals, in isolation from their social position. This makes them vulnerable to criticisms from the left which emphasize the importance of social relationships to individual well-being. Benton's argument supports the important assumption, underpinning the cause for human rights, that humans and other species of animal have much in common, both in the conditions for their well-being and their vulnerability to harm. Both liberal rights theory and its socialist critique fail adequately to theorize these aspects of human vulnerability. Nevertheless, it is argued that, enriched by feminist and ecological insights, a socialist view of rights has much to offer. Lucid and wide-ranging in its argument, Natural Relations enables the outline of an ecological socialist view of rights and justice to begin to take shape.

In Relations, eminent anthropologist Marilyn Strathern provides a critical account of this key concept and its usage and significance in the English-speaking world. Exploring relation's changing articulations and meanings over the past three centuries, Strathern shows how the historical idiosyncrasy of using an epistemological term for kinspersons (“relatives”) was bound up with evolving ideas about knowledge-making and kin-making. She draws on philosophical debates about relation—such as Leibniz's reaction to Locke—and what became its definitive place in anthropological exposition, elucidating the underlying assumptions and conventions of its use. She also calls for scholars in anthropology and beyond to take up the limitations of Western relational thinking, especially against the background of present ecological crises and interest in multispecies relations. This Way was a long known set of experiences concerning how the world operates and on being human. The modern mind imagines such a grand diversity of interpretations of these once-given axioms. With such variance comes uncertainty of truth and skepticism of knowledge claims. These, in turn, misdirect our political and social life from objective and formalized to subjective and relativized. Once strong structures guided our being in the world, but now all that is solid melts into air. C.S. Lewis' Abolition Of Man argued against this pluralist, subjectivized view, claiming that all humans have known some things to be universally true. This universal Way he called the natural law or the Tao. Once known to all humans, modern sentiments challenge this Way, deny it, and replace it with new, abstract ideas of theory or Right. More recently, late modernity replaces it with nothing but perceived reality. To prove this universal Way and lead us back to it, the appendix of Lewis' book contains an index of universally acknowledged norms among all human societies. Our present work picks up just one of the themes in his work and continues it more exhaustively in an area particularly under attack in our time: natural social relations.About the Authors:Thomas Achord lives in the rural South with his wife and four children.
