Book Stand Development After Partial Cutting of Mature Mixed Stands of White Spruce and Aspen in Manitoba

Download or read book Stand Development After Partial Cutting of Mature Mixed Stands of White Spruce and Aspen in Manitoba written by W. J. Ball and published by Canadian Forest Service, Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Riding Mountain Experimental Forest Area of south-west Manitoba, stands of 100-year-old mixed white spruce and aspen were partially cut in 1953-55 and scarified, leaving treatments that retained from 14 to 100 percent of total stand basal area. This report describes the composition of the stands, based on measurements of 88 permanent sample plots before and after cutting and in 1992. Stand development is described in terms of mortality and growth of the residual stands (including advance growth), hardwood reproduction and softwood regeneration on undisturbed seedbeds, and softwood regeneration on scarified strips within the plots. Options for renewing mature mixedwood stands are also discussed.

Book Synopsis of Information on White Engelmann and Black Spruce Natural Regeneration in North America

Download or read book Synopsis of Information on White Engelmann and Black Spruce Natural Regeneration in North America written by Everett B. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report providing a subjective assessment of the scope, applicability, and overall reliability of existing published references related to natural regeneration of white, Engelmann, and black spruce in North America and a synopsis of references on the subject. The references are listed alphabetically by author for each of 563 references, based on a dBASE IV database coded according to 105 keywords. The database allows the user to search geographically, by species of spruce, by forest section within Canada, or by any of the keywords listed. The emphasis is on white spruce in a boreal mixedwood setting but also includes information on natural regeneration of Engelmann spruce and upland black spruce, plus a limited amount of Norway spruce. Most of the references are from the 1990s.

Book Effects of Cutting Method and Seedbed Treatment on Black Spruce Regeneration in Manitoba

Download or read book Effects of Cutting Method and Seedbed Treatment on Black Spruce Regeneration in Manitoba written by V. S. Kolabinski and published by Edmonton, Alta. : Forestry Canada, Northwest Region, Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1991 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment begun in 1955 to test various cutting methods to induce regeneration in mature upland black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) stands in western Manitoba indicated regeneration failure for five cutting methods. To improve seedbeds, bulldozer blade scarification (scalping) was carried out 5 years later. This report deals with regeneration stocking and density (in terms of 4-, 5-, and 10-m2 quadrats) 29 years after logging and 24 years after scarifying. The results showed that using cutting techniques without seedbed treatment was ineffective in promoting adequate regeneration, but scarified seedbeds were well stocked. Severe damage to the residual stand indicates a need to scarify early followed by harvesting of the residual stand. Alternate strip or small-sized block clear-cutting (15 ha in size) followed by immediate scarification is recommended.

Book Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen

Download or read book Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen written by Canada-Alberta Partnership Agreement in Forestry and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was aimed primarily at technology tranfer, demonstrating the integration of silvicultural and harvesting techniques for protecting spruce understories in mixedwoods. This report provides details of the silvicultural component. It stresses post-harvest implications, particularly blowdown risk and growth and yield potential of released understory, and regeneration and growth of spruce, aspen, and poplar on mechanically harvested mixedwood sites. The project addresses concerns about maintaining the coniferous component of mixedwood forests and finding alternatives to clearcutting. It covers the current status of operational understory protection and some related aspects of integrated resource management.
