Book A Comparison of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine Techniques for Pain Control During Labor

Download or read book A Comparison of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine Techniques for Pain Control During Labor written by Sara C. Livingston and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain during pregnancy is inevitable. Controlling this pain in the safest and most effective manner should be a priority. The most common methods used today in delivery rooms around the United States may not be the safest options. Women need to be informed of the risks involved and should be made aware that there are other options. Complimentary and alternative medicine, despite its efficacy in controlling pain, is not being widely used in the United States to control labor pain. There have been limited studies on the use of acupuncture, acupressure and massage for controlling pain until recently, and even then no studies have been performed in the United States. The research proposed here will compare various complimentary and alternative medicine techniques used to manage pain during labor. This study will be a randomized double blind study that will take place in participating teaching hospitals throughout western Pennsylvania from August 2008 through August 2009. Participants will be recruited for the study through direct contact and announcements as well as advertisement posters throughout the outpatient clinics at the hospitals. The treatment groups will consist of an acupuncture group, an acupressure group, and a massage group. Each treatment group will have a corresponding control group.

This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delivery of high quality and equitable care for both mothers and newborns is complex and requires efforts across many sectors. The United States spends more on childbirth than any other country in the world, yet outcomes are worse than other high-resource countries, and even worse for Black and Native American women. There are a variety of factors that influence childbirth, including social determinants such as income, educational levels, access to care, financing, transportation, structural racism and geographic variability in birth settings. It is important to reevaluate the United States' approach to maternal and newborn care through the lens of these factors across multiple disciplines. Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access, and Choice reviews and evaluates maternal and newborn care in the United States, the epidemiology of social and clinical risks in pregnancy and childbirth, birth settings research, and access to and choice of birth settings.
