Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the International Energy Association, global energy demand will increase by 43 percent by 2035 and much of this rising demand will be due to the growing Asian economies. China alone is expected to consume two times the amount of energy as the United States and will account for around 25 percent of the total world energy demand. In Japan, the Fukushima disaster resulted in a near total shutdown of its nuclear reactors and as a result, it is now paying some of the highest prices in the world for LNG—almost $15 per unit last month—to make up for its energy shortfall. Due to these rising costs, Japan and India, in particular, are reviewing potential suppliers of LNG in an effort to obtain gas that is less expensive than that provided by current suppliers such as Malaysian, Indonesian, Australian and Qatari gas, which is linked to the price of oil—U.S. gas is not. If the U.S. chooses to become a net exporter of LNG and it can manage to reach agreements with major consumers, it will not only strengthen our strategic alliances but it will also aid in the recovery of the U.S. economy.

Book China s Gas Development Strategies

Download or read book China s Gas Development Strategies written by Shell International B.V. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book examines how China can increase the share of natural gas in its energy system. China’s energy strategy has global ramifications and impact, and central to this strategy is the country’s transition from coal to gas. The book presents the culmination of a two-year collaboration between the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC) and Shell. With the Chinese government’s strategic aim to increase the share of gas in the energy mix from 5.8% in 2014 to 10% and 15% in 2020 and 2030 respectively, the book outlines how China can achieve its gas targets. Providing both quantifiable metrics and policy measures for the transition, it is a much needed addition to the literature on Chinese energy policy. The research and the resulting recommendations of this study have fed directly into the Chinese government’s 13th Five-Year Plan, and provide unique insights into the Chinese government and policy-making. Due to its global impact, the book is a valuable resource for policy makers in both China and the rest of the world.

Book Russia China and the Geopolitics of Energy in Central Asia

Download or read book Russia China and the Geopolitics of Energy in Central Asia written by Alexandros Petersen and published by Centre for European Reform. This book was released on 2011 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia is the world's biggest hydrocarbon producer. China is one of the world's largest and fastest-growing energy markets. The two are neighbours. Yet their energy relationship is very thin. Instead, they compete for vast and largely unexplored Central Asian resources. As Kazakh oil and Turkmen gas start flowing to China, Russia's traditional dominance in the region is diminishing. However, the Central Asian states are not passive pawns in a new 'great game'. The EU and the US can help these countries to turn the new energy geopolitics to their advantage.

Book Russian Energy Strategy in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Russian Energy Strategy in the Asia Pacific written by Elizabeth Buchanan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given Australia’s lack of energy security strategy, it is not surprising that the country is void of institutional knowledge and know-how of Russian foreign energy strategy. The ‘lucky country’ as it were, relies entirely on sea-lines of communication to the north to supply fuel and to export Australian coal and natural gas. Australia has entered the 2020s as the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter; however, maintaining complacency in Canberra’s current export activities will ultimately lead to a long-term security crisis. This book critically examines Russian energy strategy in the Asia-Pacific, with a view to determining the security implications for Australia. Russia is important for global energy security chains because of its vast resource wealth and its geographical position – a pivotal position to supply both the European and Asian markets. Australia has no such luxury, geographically constrained as an island continent; it relies on the nearby Asia-Pacific import market to demand our energy and to facilitate the delivery of our national oil supplies. Understanding Russian foreign energy strategy in the region is crucial given the growing energy requirements in Australia’s emerging Asia-Pacific arena.
