Book Natural Convection from a Horizontal Cylinder Parallel to a Heated Vertical Wall

Download or read book Natural Convection from a Horizontal Cylinder Parallel to a Heated Vertical Wall written by Timothy J. McCoy and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer measurements have been made from a long (L/D = 15) horizontal cylinder in water parallel to a heated vertical wall. The cylinder and wall boundary conditions were isothermal, and they were maintained at equal temperatures. The investigation covered Rayleigh numbers based on cylinder diameter from 400,000 to 10,000,000. The cylinder height above the wall leading edge was set at height to diameter ratios, H/D, of 2.07, 7.44, and 15.50. The horizontal space between the cylinder and wall spanned the range 0.05

Book An Introduction to Uncertainty in Measurement

Download or read book An Introduction to Uncertainty in Measurement written by L. Kirkup and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement shapes scientific theories, characterises improvements in manufacturing processes and promotes efficient commerce. In concert with measurement is uncertainty, and students in science and engineering need to identify and quantify uncertainties in the measurements they make. This book introduces measurement and uncertainty to second and third year students of science and engineering. Its approach relies on the internationally recognised and recommended guidelines for calculating and expressing uncertainty (known by the acronym GUM). The statistics underpinning the methods are considered and worked examples and exercises are spread throughout the text. Detailed case studies based on typical undergraduate experiments are included to reinforce the principles described in the book. This guide is also useful to professionals in industry who are expected to know the contemporary methods in this increasingly important area. Book Natural Convection Inside a Horizontal Circular Cylinder

Download or read book Natural Convection Inside a Horizontal Circular Cylinder written by Robert G. Hantman and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work analyzes the natural convection of a fluid contained in an infinitely long horizontal cylinder at large Prandtl number and unit order Grashof number. The motion is generated by an imposed cosine wall temperature distribution which includes an arbitrary phase angle. This phase angle may be varied to allow for cases ranging from heating-from-the-side to heating-from-below to be investigated. From an asymptotic ordering of the governing energy and vorticity transport equations for large Prandtl number, it is shown that the core region, which contains the fluid surrounded completely by a boundary-layer flow along the cylinder wall, may assume either of two configurations. The choice of the core configuration is shown to depend upon the nature of the streamlines therein. Solutions obtained from linearized forms of the full governing equations agree with the core temperature and velocity fields which were observed experimentally for heating angles sufficiently away from the heating-from-the-side case. Also, the influence of various linearizations is studied. For heating angles near the heating-from-the-side case, a linearized form of the boundary layer equations is developed which allows the solutions to match with the second possible core configuration. The form of the results agrees generally with experimental evidence for heating-from-the-side. (Author).

Book Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer

Download or read book Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer written by Nevzat Onur and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION TO CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER A highly practical intro to solving real-world convective heat transfer problems with MATLAB® and MAPLE In Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer, accomplished professor and mechanical engineer Nevzat Onur delivers an insightful exploration of the physical mechanisms of convective heat transfer and an accessible treatment of how to build mathematical models of these physical processes. Providing a new perspective on convective heat transfer, the book is comprised of twelve chapters, all of which contain numerous practical examples. The book emphasizes foundational concepts and is integrated with explanations of computational programs like MATLAB® and MAPLE to offer students a practical outlet for the concepts discussed within. The focus throughout is on practical, physical analysis rather than mathematical detail, which helps students learn to use the provided computational tools quickly and accurately. In addition to a solutions manual for instructors and the aforementioned MAPLE and MATLAB® files, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer includes: A thorough introduction to the foundations of convective heat transfer, including coordinate systems, and continuum and thermodynamic equilibrium concepts Practical explorations of the fundamental equations of laminar convective heat transfer, including integral formulation and differential formulation Comprehensive discussions of the equations of incompressible external laminar boundary layers, including laminar flow forced convection and the thermal boundary layer concept In-depth examinations of dimensional analysis, including the dimensions of physical quantities, dimensional homogeneity, and dimensionless numbers Ideal for first-year graduates in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer is also an indispensable resource for practicing engineers in academia and industry in the mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering fields.

Book Natural Convection in a Horizontal Cylinder at Large Prandtl Numbers

Download or read book Natural Convection in a Horizontal Cylinder at Large Prandtl Numbers written by Ernest R. Menold and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work deals with the natural convection of a fluid confined within an infinite horizontal cylinder, at large Prandtl numbers and unit order Grashof numbers. The fluid motion is generated by means of a cosine temperature distribution imposed circumferentially on the cylinder wall. An arbitrary phase angle is included in this distribution in order to investigate a variety of heating configurations ranging from the heated-from-the-side to the heated-from-below case. The governing equations are solved using a technique only recently applied to problems of this nature, known as the 'modified Oseen linearization'. The mathematical simplifications inherent in a large Prandtl number analysis make it possible to scrutinize carefully this technique, and both its simplifications and shortcomings are discussed. Key assumptions in the analysis are carefully examined and ambiguities appearing in earlier work are pointed out. An experimental investigation of natural convection phenomena in a viscous silicone oil confined in a horizontal cylinder is made, and the results are compared with theory. The experimental equipment was designed so that a cosine temperature distribution could be maintained on the cylinder wall. (Author).
