Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down comes a deluge of sonorous hail, Or prone-descending rain. Wide-rent, the clouds Pour a whole flood, and yet, its flame unquenched, Th’unconquerable lightning struggles through. Ragged and fierce, or in red whirling balls, And fires the mountains with redoubled rage. Black from the stroke, above, the smould’ring pine Stands a sad shattered trunk; and, stretched below, A lifeless group the blasted cattle lie. James Thompson, “The Seasons” (1727) have been investigating ball lightning for more than two decades. I published a ball lightning report in Nature in 1976 that received worldwide publicity and I consequently many people wrote to me with accounts of their own experiences. Within a very short time, I had accumulated about 200 firsthand accounts, and the file has continued to grow steadily since then. Several things impressed me. Few of those who wrote to me had any detailed foreknowledge of ball lightning at the time of their observation. Nonetheless, once reports of other phenomena such as St. Elmo’s fire had been eliminated, the remaining descriptions were remarkably consistent. Furthermore, nearly all who contacted me were keen to have an explanation of what they had seen and seemed entirely sincere.

Book excerpt: Ball lightning is an enigma. These luminous objects that appear occasionally during thunderstorms and can reach several meters in diameter have been a mystery to science for about 200 years. Despite several thousands of reported observations, their nature is still unknown. In this book, well documented cases of ball lightning are described and used to unravel some aspects of this mysterious form of atmospheric electricity. Throughout the book, the author discusses the various facets of the problem in an accessible but rigorous style, delivering a readable and informative text that will captivate the curious reader. He finally reaches the surprising conclusion that the solution to this puzzle may have been hidden in plain sight for many years. A foreword by Earle Williams, leading lightning researcher at MIT, introduces the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1837 a comprehensive discussion of lightning appeared in the Annual of the French Bureau des Longitudes with a section on ball lightning which provided for the first time a readily available source in the scientific literature of the basic properties of this curious natural phenomenon. The author, Francois Arago, was the dominant influence in the French Academy of Sciences in the nineteenth century, having become a member of that august body at the age of twenty-three. His attention alone doubtless served at that time to establish the validity of scientific interest in the problem. In addition his discussion covered some of the major questions associated with ball lightning in a nota bly clear-sighted, effective style. Later reconsideration of the same questions often provided no significant improvement over Arago's discussion. There followed a dauntless band of varying but always small number who attempted to account for an apparently simple natural occurrence, a ball of fire usually seen in thunderstorms, with the best knowledge that advancing science could provide. All attempts to deal with this phenomenon were in variably frustrated. The characteristics of ball lightning could be readily cataloged, but they firmly resisted both experimental reproduction and theo retical explanation. One may say that to this day there is no explanation accepted by a large number of scientists. Several investigators of great ability and considerable accomplishment in different fields of science, including Faraday, Kelvin, and Arrhenius, took note of the problem.

Book Ball Lightning and Bead Lightning

Download or read book Ball Lightning and Bead Lightning written by James Barry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to review the known physical aspects of two unusual forms of atmospheric luminous phenomena, to deduce their characteristics and properties, and to promote efforts to improve their understanding. These two forms, called ball lightning and bead lightning, have visual images that differ from the linear image associated with normallightning. The terms "balliightning" and "bead lightning" are used to denote atmospheric luminous forms which are occasionally observed and have the geometrie shape suggested by their name. Vet, it is possible that neither phenomenon may in fact be a form of lightning in the sense of a continuous electrical discharge. Bead lightning has been described as the residue of a cloud-to cloud or cloud-to-ground lightning stroke and has the appearance of aseries of luminous balls separated by dark regions, thus resembling astring of pearls, and remains visible for about one second. Ball lightning has been described as a single luminous globe appearing ne ar the ground after a lightning stroke and also remaining visible for about one second. Both phenomena remain visible far longer than normal lightning flashes.

Book Ball Lightning as a Messenger from a New World of Circulating Light

Download or read book Ball Lightning as a Messenger from a New World of Circulating Light written by V. P. Torchigin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that ball lightning has nothing to do with electricity at all; it is a bubble where ordinary white light circulates in the bubble’s shell in all possible directions. Such a bubble of light is a completely new, previously unknown object, consisting mainly of light, which determines its anomalous behaviour. Such anomalous behaviour coincides in detail with the mysterious and paradoxical behaviour of natural ball lightning. This book argues that natural ball lightning is an experimental sample which confirms this theory. In the book, the necessary conditions for the stability of the bubble of light and the physical laws that ensure its stability are given, making it possible to determine its unique physical parameters. The book is based on over 30 scientific articles published in leading international journals since 2003.

Download or read book Artificial Ball Lightnings written by V. Torchigin and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of two century attempts to produce Ball Lightning in a laboratory with respect to understanding that Ball Lightning nature is optical one is presented. The Ball Lightning can be imagined as the soap bubble where the soap film is replaced by the film of strongly compressed air. The conventional white light is circulating in the film in all possible directions. The film shows itself as a planar wave guide the curvature of which is different from zero. The wave guide prevents the radiation of the light in free space. In turn, the light compresses the air due to the electrostriction pressure. This combination is closer to the light rather than to the lightning. We cut the tail in the world lightning and will call this combination by Ball Light. The energy of the light is essentially greater than that of the compressed air. In this case the behavior of the Ball Light is determined by the forces connected with the light rather than by the conventional forces connected with material particles. Said forces were considered in numerous hypotheses but all attempts to explain the mysterious behavior of the Ball Lightning failed. On the contrary, we have succeeded to explain all features of the Ball Lightning behavior on assumption that the forces between the light and matter play a decisive role. Our theory is mentioned in Wikipedia. All intriguing puzzles of the Ball Lightning behavior are explained in a natural way. We show in the book that puzzling anomalous ball-shaped formations obtained in 19 and begin of 20 centuries can be considered as the Ball Lights with small lifetime because they disappear immediately after ceasing a gas discharge. Objects with the lifetime of several seconds have been obtained in the second half of 20 century. Bearing in mind properties of the Ball Lights, anomalous properties of such objects are explained. An explanation is presented why an erosive gas discharge is favorable for production of the objects. A survey of up-to-date attempts of production of similar objects with the lifetime about 10 s is presented. Schemes of setups for production laboratory ball lightning with the great lifetime and stored energy comparable to natural ones are considered. We have shown that labaratory anomalous objects are not naturak Ball Lightning observed and described by eyewitnesses. But the anomalies of the natural Ball Lightnings and autonomous objects are explained by the same physical phenomenon connected with the circulation of the intensive light along side surface. Thus, a behaviour and properties of the considered autonomous objects confirms out optical theory of natural Ball Lightnings.

Book Ball Lightning As a Self Confined Light

Download or read book Ball Lightning As a Self Confined Light written by V. Torchigin and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is based on a systematization of two ten papers published in the leading international physical journals. It is shown that the self-confined light is possible in the conventional air atmosphere and natural Ball Lightning are a particular case of the self-confined light. This assertion is based on a surprising coincidence between behaviors of our imaginary self-confined light in accordance with known physical laws and natural Ball Lightnings derived from numerous evidence of eyewitnesses. The self-confined light is considered as a generalization of known incoherent optical plane space solition by means of increasing its curvature. Many problems concerned soliton's stability, lifetime, losses of radiation, stored energy, speed of motion, and originating are analyzed.

Book The World of Circulating Light Where Ball Lightnings Live

Download or read book The World of Circulating Light Where Ball Lightnings Live written by Vladimir Torchigin and published by . This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes a completely new world, the existence of which no one had even suspected before. Therefore, this world could not be studied either theoretically or experimentally. The study of the nature of ball lightning made it possible to discover this world. Pyotr Kapitsa, a Russian scientist, Nobel Prize winner, studying the phenomenon of ball lightning, was forced to admit at the end of his life that this bright nut was too strong for his teeth. At the same time, he suggested that ball lightning is a phenomenon from another world unknown to him. Indeed, he was partly right. He was wrong that ball lightning was related to plasma, but he was right that ball lightning belonged to another world unknown to him. The book describes the features of this world and the properties of its inhabitants. The most known among them is ball lightning. This world we called the world of circulating light. This book is not science fiction. The book is based on over eight dozen articles published since 2003 in leading international physics and optics journals. Although scientists have not been able to unravel the nature of ball lightning for many centuries, it turned out that the explanation is so simple that it is accessible to schoolchildren. Such an explanation can be given without a single formula, recalling only the well-known physical laws from the school curriculum.

Book The Book of the Damned

Download or read book The Book of the Damned written by Charles Fort and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signature edition of Charles Fort's classic of paranormal discovery--reset with a new index. Welcome to a record of the damned. "By damned," wrote Charles Fort in 1919, "I mean the excluded. We shall have a procession of the data that Science has excluded." Fort's record of the unknown was one of the first to expose us to visitors from space, monsters, poltergeists, and floating islands. Frogs fall from the sky. Mysterious airships take flight in an age before the airplane. People disappear, reappear, and spontaneously combust. This stand-alone, handsome edition exposes today's readers to the core work of Fort's extraordinary career--in which he pushed us to ask: What is out there?
