Book excerpt: The seeds of this conference were sown with the publication by Press, in 1965, of a paper in which he suggested that the displacement field due to a major earthquake may extend over much greater distances than had been thought possible before. Later on, Mansinha and Smylie pointed out that if Press was correct then, since the redistri bution of significant quantities of mass was involved, the inertia tensor of the earth would be altered and thus cause the earth to wobble; this revived the idea that earth quakes might be the long sought source for maintaining the Chandler Wobble. They argued that since earthquakes are sudden events it should be worthwhile trying to determine if there was any correlation between sudden changes in the Chandler term of the pole path and major earthquakes. Furthermore, since displacements occur both before and after an earthquake it might be possible to obtain a few days warning of a major earthquake by making instantaneous observations of the pole path. Analysis of the data indicated some correlation but, as often happens in science in general and in geophysics in particular, the results were not conclusive because of imperfect theory and the need for more accurate determinations of the pole position. It soon became clear that a meeting between geophysicists and astronomers involved in this type of work would be of mutual benefit.

Book excerpt: The last major conference on infrared astronomy was the IAU Symposium No. 96 in June 1980. Since then, the discipline has continued to mature and to contribute to all branches of astrophysics. One particular area of growth has been in spectroscopic capabilities at all infrared wavelengths. The purpose of the Symposium in Toledo was to review the scientific questions to be addressed via infrared spectroscopy and to provide, in the proceedings, a useful summary of the field. The sensitivity of infrared spectroscopic observations is still generally limited by detector characteristics or by thermal background radiation. However in recent years improvements in detector technology together with developments in spectroscopic instrumentation have made possible both quite detailed spectroscopy of the brighter members of many classes of galactic sources and also begun to open up some infrared spectroscopy of extragalactic sources. The potential of the field in the next decade or two is clear. The lRAS mission has completed one of the pre-requisites, namely an all-sky photometric survey. Major space missions utilising cryogenic infrared telescopes have been approved in Europe (ISO) and seem likely in the USA (SIRTF); plans for space submillimeter telescopes are firming up. On the ground large telescopes optimized for infrared observations are now in operation at high altitude sites and specialized submillimeter facilities are under construction. The particular advantages of planned, very large telescopes for infrared observations are widely accepted.

Although it was originally intended to be a small workshop with participants mainly from North America, it evolved to a workshop with 72 partiCipants from twelve countries (U.S.A. 52, Canada 3, the Netherlands 3, United Kingdom 3, Australia 2, Ireland 2, Italy 2, France 1, Mexico 1, Switzerland 1, West Germany 1, and U.S.S.R. 1). This workshop was sponsored by the Joint Institute of Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) and the University of Colorado. In order to preserve a workshop atmosphere, while still presenting both extensive reviews and contributed papers, an experimental format was adopted. All contributed papers related to the topiCS of the day were presented in poster form in the early morning and were accessible all day. During each morning (or afternoon) session review papers were presented, followed by a coffee break in the poster area adjacent to the conference room. Then the review papers and contributed papers were discussed for roughly one and a half hours. The last session was devoted to invited panel papers and discussion of current and future problems in the field of stellar radio astronomy.

In the announcement of the Colloquium, it was suggested that there would be special emphasis on the techniques of quality control, and on the standards for the presentation of numerical data in both printed and com puter-readable form. As the meeting progressed it became clear that the lack of a standard, unambiguous system for the identifi cation of stellar objects was a source of much confusion and inefficiency in the use of existing data files. This and other such matters were the subject of further discussions by Commission 5 at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which was held at Grenoble during the following fortnight, 24 August - 2 September 1976. The proposal for the Colloquium was prepared by J. Jung, who was then Director of the Centre des Donnees Stellaires at Stras bourg, and G. A. Wilkins, Chairman of the IAU Working Group on Numerical Data, and was accepted by the IAU Executive Committee on the recommendation of the President of Commission 5, with the support of Commissions 25, 29 and 45. There has tended to be a lack of communication between theoreticians and observers and between different schools of thought, in spite of the advances of recent years in certain directions (observations of ordinary novae at minimum and of dwarf novae, theory of the causes of the explosion, etc ••• ). The meeting whose proceedings are contained in this volume was organized to stimulate a confron tation between the different ideas and results. The subject has changed a lot since 1963, when the previous international meeting was held. There were 61 participants at the conference from 17 countries, so very many groups ~oing research in the field of novae were represented. The reader will see that the subject has become more physical (we know for instance that the binary nature of novae is essential) but much work remains to be done. There is still a large gulf between theory and observation. May he find here many new ideas for future research! I would like to thank the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique for providing financial help. Book excerpt: In recent years, it has become clear that the red-giant phase is one of the most dramatic periods in a star's life, when all of its parts become involved in ways that have both direct and indirect observational consequences. This is most particularly true of low- and intermediate mass stars during the second ascent of the giant branch. Such stars bring to their surfaces products of nucleosynthesis currently taking place in their deep interiors, they pulsate as Mira variables, develop extended outward-flowing atmospheres that may exhibit maser properties, and shed great quantities of matter, sometimes highly processed, into the inter stellar medium. The manner in which processed matter is brought to the surface is far from being completely explained, and the precise mechanism or mechanisms whereby matter is ejected from the stellar surface (whether by deposition of Alfven waves, radiation pressure on grains, or as a consequence of so me large scale envelope instability) has yet to be elucidated to every one's satisfaction. The purpose of the second workshop in Astrophysics, organized by the "Advanced School of Astronomy", was to bring together experts on all the physical processes occurring in red giants in an effort to emphasize the interrelatedness of these individual processes, and to encourage a dia logue among experts that might serve to initiate a synthesis, or at least sharpen our understanding of the most important problems to address in the future.

Book excerpt: The Los Alamos Chapman Conference on Magnetospheric Substorms and Related Plasma Processes can be considered the fourth in a series devoted to magnetospheric substorms, after the Moscow (1971), Houston (1972), and Bryce Mountain (1974) meetings. The main motivation for organizing the Los Alamos Conference was that magnetospheric substorm studies have advanced enough to the point of bringing experimenters, analysts and theorists together to discuss major substorm problems with special emphasis on theoretical interpretations in terms of plasma processes. In spite of an extremely heavy schedule from 8:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., every session was conducted in an enjoyable and spirited atmosphere. In fact, during one of the afternoons that we had put aside for relaxation, John Winckler led a group of the attendees in a climb to the ceremonial cave of a prehistoric Indian ruin at Bandelier National Monument, near Los Alamos under a crystal blue sky and a bright New Mexico sun. There, they danced as the former dwellers of the pueblo had, perhaps as an impromptu evocation of a magnetospheric event.

There has, in recent years, been renewed interest in theories that connect up gravitation and particle physics, and in the astrophysical consequences of such theories. Some of these accounts involve a time-variation of the Newtonian gravitational parameter, G. In this respect, the present book may be regarded as a companion to my Cosmology and Geophysics (Hilger, Bristol, 1978). There is some overlap as regards the discussion of G-variability, but the emphasis in the present book is on astrophysics while the emphasis in the other one is on geophysics. The subject is a very broad one indeed, and in giving a review of it I have adopted a somewhat unorthodox way of presenting the material involved. The main reason for this is that a review of such a wide subject should aim at two levels: the level of the person who is interested in it, and the level of the person who is professionally engaged in research into it. To achieve such a two-level coverage, I have split the text up into two parts. The first part (Chapters 1-7) represents a relatively non-technical overview of the subject, while the second part (Chapters 8-11) represents a technical examination of the most important aspects of non-Einsteinian gravitational theory and its relation to astrophysics.

For instance while most students of the subject have considered them binary, many have at different times supported single star models. The nature of their outbursts is uncertain, while the dividing line between symbiotic stars and novae is unclear. In any case doubts can even be raised as to whether a class of "Symbiotic Stars" really exists. Much new data has been obtained in recent years, in particular from the study of radiation outside the visual region. Many symbiotic stars have been studied in the UV with IUE since 1978, while X-rays were det ected in a few cases with the Einstein satellite. There have been a num ber of infrared and radio studies, and the number of known symbiotic stars has also considerably increased. Furthermore theoretical ideas have in recent years been considerably enriched by concepts of stellar winds, and accretion phenomena in binaries including accretion disks. It was there fore extremely opportune and timely to hold the first international meet ing exclusively devoted to these stars, so as to consider the new results from such a wide range of observations in different spectral regions, and the conclusions which can be drawn for possible models as well as theories of the nature and structure of symbiotic stars. After a session devoted to new observations in different spectral regions, a session was spent considering some individual stars.

The colloquium was attended by 108 participants from 14 countries (U.S.A. 29, the Netherlands 20, U.K. 19, Germany 10, France 7, Australia 5, Canada 5, Japan 4, India 2, New Zea land 2, Sweden 2, Argentina I, Belgium I, Israel I). It was sponsored by the Netherlands Foundation for Radio Astronomy, the International Astronomical Union, the Department of Education and Sciences, the Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale, the Leiden Kerkhoven-Bosscha Foundat ion and the State University at Groningen. This volume contains 36 of the 37 papers presented. Nearly all papers are followed by a sununary of the discussion that took place after their presentation. A few papers, published in full elsewhere, are given only as abstracts. The majority of the papers are related to aperture synthesis in radio astronomy; a small number deal with optical astronomy and with applications in acoustics and medicine. The presentations are divided in 7 groups: aperture synthesis and its deficiencies, the problem of limited or missing phase information, techniques for processing and data display, optical interferometric methods, maximum entropy image reconstruction, other image improvement methods, and a survey of image formation from projections. Each group contains one or two invited lectures (see Table of Contents), intended as surveys of particular areas; on the average they occupy twice as many pages as the other papers.
