Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ASI 'Topics in Atomic and Nuclear Collisions' was organized in Predeal from August 31 to September 11. It brought together people with a broad interest in Atomic and Nuclear Physics from several research institutes and universities in Ro mania and 16 other countries. The school continues a tradition that started on a small scale back in 1968, fo cussing mainly on current problems in nuclear physics. Though the organizing of this edition started very late and in very uncertain economic and financial conditions, it turned out to be the largest meeting of this type ever organized in Romania, both in topics and participation. There were many applicants for participation and grants, considerably more than could be handled. The selection made by the local organizing committee was based on the following criteria: a proper balance of atomic and nuclear physicists, a broad representation of people from Research Institutes and Universities, a balanced par ticipat!on with respect to age, sex, nationality and observance of ASI requirements.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and contributions presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "Frontier Topics in Nuclear Physics", held at Predeal in Romania from 24 August to 4 September 1993. The ASI stands in a row of 23 Predeal Summer Schools organized by the Institute of Atomic Physics (Bucharest) in Predeal or Poiana-Brasov during the last 25 years. The main topics of the ASI were cluster radioactivity, fission and fusion. the production of very heavy elements, nuclear structure described with microscopic and collective models, weak: interaction and double beta decay, nuclear astrophysics, and heavy ion reactions from low to ultrarelativistic energies. The content of this book is ordered according to these topics. The ASI started with a lecture by Professor Greiner on the "Present and future of nuclear physics", showing the most important new directions of research and the interdisciplinary relations of nuclear physics with other fields of physics. This lecture is printed in the first chapter of the book.

At the first School on the above topic (Maratea, September 1983, Volume 103 in this series), Harrie Massey presented the introductory lectures, summarized the entire lecture program, and presented an outlook on future developments in atomic collision physics. In an after-dinner speech, Massey recalled personal reminiscences and historical events with regard to atomic collision physics, to which he had contributed by initiating pioneering work and by stimulating and surveying this branch of physics over a period of almost six decades. Participants in the Maratea School will always remember Harrie Massey as a charming and wonderful person who was most pleased to discuss with everyone--students, postdoctorals, and senior scientists--any topic in atomic collision physics. Harrie Massey was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the 1984 Santa Flavia School. Before his death he expressed his interest in attending this second School devoted to the presentation of recent developments and highlights in atomic collision physics. It is the desire of all authors to honor Harrie Massey with their contributions in these Proceedings.

Book excerpt: Each summer, the Theoretical Physics Division of the Canadian Association of Physicists organizes a summer institute of two weeks duration on a current topic in theoretical physics. This volume contains the lectures from the Pacific Summer Institute held at Pearson College on Vancouver Island, B. C. (Canada) from August 23 to September 3, 1982. The Institute was titled "Progress in Nuclear Dynamics: Short-Distance Behavior in the Nucleus". The primary source of funds for the Institute came from NATO through its Advanced Study Institute programme. Significant finan cial support is also gratefully acknowledged from TRIUMF, Simon Fraser University, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. The topic of the school was the role of the substructure of hadrons--quarks and gluons--in nuclear physics. This includes not only the effects which may be observed in specific nuclear states, such as form factors at large momentum transfer, or the presence of hidden color components in the ground states of few nucleon systems, but also effects which may be observed in the nuclear matter contin uum: the phase transition from normal nuclear matter to a plasma of quarks and gluons. The current status of the long distance phenom enology of the nucleus--the interacting boson approximation and the role of n's and ~'s in nuclear structure, is also reviewed.

A renewal of interest in Atomic Physics began in the sixties, after the discovery of Quantum Electro dynamics, and later when it provided some basic tests of fundamental questions like parity violation, time reversal or Dirac theory. More recently the development of new technologies led to the ex ploration of very extreme cases in which the most secrete aspects of atoms have been observed. - Rydberg states where the atoms are so big that they can be described by classical theories; - Heavy or super-heavy ions or exotic atoms where unknown QED or relativistic effects can be observed (very heavy hydrogenlike or helium like ions, positron production in very violent collisions ••. ); - Huge external perturbations as those appearing in super-dense plasmas or ultra-high fields. The aim of this school was to gather atomic physicists from all over the world working in all these areas of Atomic Physics.

Such systems are also of interest to the current energy crisis because of their usage for photovoltaic devices, nuclear fuels (UF6), fusion lasers (Xe*2)' catalysts for solar energy conversion, etc.

Bederson was also a great teacher and university administrator. The first part of this volume of Advances in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (AAMOP), entitled Benjamin Bederson: Works, Comments and Legacies, contains articles written from a personal perspective. His days at Los Alamos during World War II, working on the A bomb, are recounted by V. Fitch. H. Walther writes on the time when both were editors of AAMOP. H. Lustig, E. Merzbacher and B. Crasemann, with whom Bederson had a long-term association at the American Physical Society, contribute their experiences, one of them in the style of a poem. C.D. Rice recalls his days when he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at NYU, and the education in physics that he received from Bederson, then Dean of the Graduate School. The contribution by R. Stuewer is on Bederson as physicist historian (his latest interest). N. Lane draws some parallels between "two civic scientists, Benjamin Bederson and the other Benjamin".
