Book Just Relations

Download or read book Just Relations written by Alison Louise Holland and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mary Bennett died in 1961, Australia lost one of its leading Aboriginal rights activists. Mary's crusade is still, sadly, a current one, and this book serves to historicize the ongoing struggle for Aboriginal rights through the lens of Mary's campaign. By tracing Mary's advocacy - from the 1920s, when the possibility of Aboriginal human rights was first mooted, to the 1960s, when an attempt was made to have the Aboriginal question raised before the United Nations - Just Relations charts a large portion of human rights history. However, the book also tracks a discourse of needs, moral codes, and sentiments, as well as the urgent goal of keeping people alive. In this sense, then, Mary Bennett's story demonstrates the close connection between the rise of humanitarianism as a political project and the rise of human rights. ***Just Relations was shortlisted for the 2016 NSW Premier's Australian History Prize. *** Librarians: ebook available on ProQuest and EBSCO [Subject: Biography, Aboriginal Studies, Human Rights, Australian Studies, History]

Book The State Counterinsurgency and Political Policing in Colonial and Postcolonial Malawi 1891 1994

Download or read book The State Counterinsurgency and Political Policing in Colonial and Postcolonial Malawi 1891 1994 written by Paul Chiudza Banda and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the longue duree approach and the political economy approach, The State, Counterinsurgency, and Political Policing in Colonial and Postcolonial Malawi, 1891-1994 studies Malawi's colonial and post-colonial history. Malawi is a former British Protectorate, formerly known as the Nyasaland Protectorate. Paul Chiudza Banda analyzes the story of the rise of insurgencies in Malawi and adopts the concept of "counterinsurgency" to address the reactions of the state to those who challenged its legitimacy and authority. Banda explores the factors behind the rise of insurgency, such as land alienation, high taxation, elements of forced labor, and denial of development opportunities. Banda also examines the counterinsurgency measures used by the state, such as the use of brutal force (especially through the police and other para-military groups), the codification of strict laws, and the offer of development opportunities. Through Malawi’s history, Banda provides an analysis on why citizens challenge state authority, how the state responds, and what methods the state uses to defeat insurgencies.

Book British Paternalism and Africa 1920 1940

Download or read book British Paternalism and Africa 1920 1940 written by Penelope Hetherington and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Paternalism and Africa (1978) is a study of the beliefs and assumptions of members of the British intelligentsia who concerned themselves with British–African politics in the period between the wars. The journals and books published in Britain during this period were used as source material to discover the attitudes of politicians, missionaries, administrators and others concerning ‘African’ issues. In the two decades before the Second World War the debate about the future of the African colonies still seemed to be the preserve of Europeans, anxious to influence British politics according to their own particular brand of paternalism. It is argued that some writers still used arguments about Britain’s ‘civilizing’ mission, while others emphasised the need for a period of reconstruction of African society, to be carried out before independence could be granted. Only the Marxist-Leninist writers rejected doctrines which implied the necessity for continued European presence in Africa.

  • Author : Bernard Porter
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • ISBN : 0857711776
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Critics of Empire written by Bernard Porter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of 'empire' has been at the forefront of world politics for over a century. Bernard Porter's landmark work traces the critical response to the British imperial project in the years leading up to World War I. Imperial adventures, including the intervention in Egypt and the Anglo-Boer War, together with the jingoistic clamour that surrounded them, attracted powerful hostility as well as support. "Criticism of Empire" is the subject of Porter's stimulating book. Long regarded as the classic account, the author has now added a substantial new Introduction. He demonstrates the power and influence of major critics such as J.A. Hobson - the acknowledged creator of the 'capitalist theory' of imperialism - E.D. Morel and Mary Kingsley and of organisations like the Congo Reform Association. With themes which are also highly relevant to the present day discourse on the American 'empire', this book will prove essential reading for all students of imperial and international history.
