Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natives of Milton After the second cup the paleness of the Widows disappeared; the tightly-drawn skin of their cheeks flushed warmly and their handsome teeth were freely displayed. They began to talk briskly of the lovers whom they had dismissed in their youth, and of junket ings at distant fairs. Sarah was too much their junior to remember these fine doings; but she sat listening, with her eyes sparkling and her lips twitching in sympathy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noted Men and Historical Narrations of Ancient Milton Ladies and Gentlemen of the School Committee: At your request I have prepared brief statements respecting those of our early inhabitants whose names you propose to affix to our common schools. The men whom you have selected were in their day, without exception, representative men. They were men of stalwart character, strong, wise, God-fearing men; earnest in purpose and decided in action, who could be safely trusted with the affairs of Church and State. Such are the individuals whom you have selected, from the vast number of their compeers, to give names to the schools of Milton, whose rare qualities of heart and mind, in many particulars, all our sons and daughters may well emulate. Never were more truthful words uttered than those of Governor Stoughton, in his Election Sermon, 1668: - "God sifted a whole nation that he might send choice grain over into this wilderness." Belcher School. It is proposed to name the East School the Belcher School. Jonathan Belcher was born in Cambridge, Mass., Jan. 8, 1681, and graduated at Harvard College in 1699, in a class of twelve. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book English Prose Writings of John Milton Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Prose Writings of John Milton Classic Reprint written by John Milton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Prose Writings of John Milton There are omitted from this volume all the writings in which Milton replied to the Opponents of his views. The controversies of 250 years ago travelled by many paths in which we care no longer to assert a right of way. At all times, the Reformer who is answering opponents has his course of argument determined by the reason or the unreason Of other men. Forms of reply dependent upon accidents Of the attack are only to be read with measured judgment by those who have read the attack also and Often when we have read both, we have heard a sound of battle in the air that has appealed to our imaginations and disturbed our judgment. The battle Of Opinion rolls forward to new ground from century to century. The great truths are immutable, the applications Of them vary with the change of time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Age of Milton More clearly to be discerned. The divine, the historian, the biographer, the dramatist, the poet, fall, each Of them, into one or other of these two main divisions, according as each is either imitative or spontaneous, - the producer of ingenious variations on Old familiar strains, or seeking to win an audience by utterances in which theme and treat ment are alike new. Of the English literature of the age Of Milton, it may be said that at least three-fourths Of it is almost entirely imitative; Of Milton himself, that in no respect is his originality more clearly to be discerned than in the manner in which (if we except his political pamphlets) his genius asserts its independence Of tradition and Of party. Much Of the imitativeness Of the literature of this time is to be referred to the fact that that literature was, either directly or indirectly, largely concerned with religious belief and consequently with tradition. It is only when we compare some Of the ablest and most thoughtful theological literature Of our own day with the best Of Milton's age that we become aware that theology is not all tradition; and that around great central truths there gathers, as the ages roll on, new and loftier inspiration as amid the disso nance of Past and Present man seeks to interpret to his own soul the solemn fugue-notes of ancient Revelation. But that which chie y serves to redeem a certain propor tion Of the theological literature Of the seventeenth century from Oblivion, is its association with the national history with party iii politics as well as in religion. Hence, indeed, much Of its in spiration - its fire, its argumentative force, its eloquence - according as each writer is Roman or Protestant, Teutonic or Latin, Anglican or Puritan in his views and sympathies. At the time when Milton came up to Cam. Bridge and studied there (1625-1632) the power Of Teutonic Protestantism seemed ebbing fast. Ever since the Synod Of Dort, Arminianism had been gaining ground; and its. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Milton and the Cavaliers There is, perhaps, no sadder career in the whole of English history than that of Charles I. The very designations by which he is known, mark, by their varying character, the changes through which he passed. He was Baby Charles, he was Charles I., and the White King - so styled by Lilly the Astrologer - then he became merely "the man Charles Stuart," at least in the mouths of many; and now, among those who look only on one side of the picture, he lives in memory always as Charles the Martyr. Between the first fond foolish name, given by his eccentric but indulgent father, and the last mournful appellation, yawns a gulf which represents a complete change in the English Monarchy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Paradise Lost This sonnet is one of the most' splendid acts of homage ever paid by one great poet to another. It was written during the great war of a hundred years ago, the struggle against the devouring am bitiou of Napoleon. It is dated 1802, a time of facile jubilation, no doubt, to those who did not or could not look ahead, but a time of utter gloom to one who, like Wordsworth, exalted the war as a holy war for great principles of Liberty and Good Faith.
