Legendary art commentator Hamish Keith returned to much-deserved national attention when his television series and accompanying book The Big Picture seized the imagination of New Zealanders. The high-rating show and bestselling book rekindled fresh enthusiasm for the complex and fascinating story of our art heritage and cemented Keith's stature as one of our most engaging, confronting and witty cultural commentators. Native Wit, Keith's witty, revealing memoir, gives readers an insight into his well-lived, rich and immensely varied life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the “Great Movies,” that fluid category of feature films deemed by various authorities—film societies, critics, academics, and movie enthusiasts—to be the enduring and memorable works of cinematic history. But what are they about? In Wit’s End, the author attempts to “make sense” of these films in order to understand their greatness in the context of their relation to other films and to the worlds they come from and recreate on screen. To that end, we employ the conceptual power of pragmatic social theory and the rich idea of aesthesis to explore and arrange these films as a means of understanding what they express about the universality of human life in our keen use of wit, organization of social wont, and direction of cultural way. It is hoped that such an inquiry will illuminate the glory of the great films and contribute to the advance of film studies.

Download or read book Wit s Pilgrimage written by Darryll Grantley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: England experienced something of a social revolution in the years from the early 16th century to the Civil War. This work seeks to add a new dimension to the discussion of this phenomena by focusing on the emerging role and function of social behaviour as a means of signalling social identity and rank. Noting the even greater emphasis placed on manners, customs and ordinary behaviour during that time period, Darryll Grantley demonstrates the interrelation of two key elements - education and drama - in the reconstruction of social identity. By examining the relationship between education and drama, Grantley contributes important perspectives on the ways in which drama functioned in society. He explores education as a prominent motif in the aristocratically patronized drama of the 16th century; the contribution of the academy to the evolution of public modes of drama; education and the playwrights; education and the audience; and the representations of learning and social behaviour on the public stage. Throughout, the study explores the increasing social significance of education in 16th- and 17th-century England, and the reflection of that cultural change in the drama of the period.

Book excerpt: Essays by “Jerusalem’s version of Charles Bukowski . . . Just as aware and critical—of his city, his family, Israel, the Arabs, but most of all of himself” (NPR). Sayed Kashua has been praised by the New York Times as “a master of subtle nuance in dealing with both Arab and Jewish society.” An Arab-Israeli who lived in Jerusalem for most of his life, Kashua started writing with the hope of creating one story that both Palestinians and Israelis could relate to, rather than two that cannot coexist together. He devoted his novels and his satirical weekly column published in Haaretz to telling the Palestinian story and exploring the contradictions of modern Israel, while also capturing the nuances of everyday family life in all its tenderness and chaos. With an intimate tone fueled by deep-seated apprehension and razor-sharp ironic wit, Kashua has been documenting his own life as well as that of society at large: he writes about his children’s upbringing and encounters with racism, about fatherhood and married life, the Jewish-Arab conflict, his professional ambitions, travels around the world as an author, and—more than anything—his love of books and literature. He brings forth a series of brilliant, caustic, wry, and fearless reflections on social and cultural dynamics as experienced by someone who straddles two societies. “One of the most celebrated satirists in Hebrew literature . . . [Kashua] has an acerbic, dry wit and a talent for turning everyday events into apocalyptic scenarios.”—Philadelphia Inquirer “What is most striking in these columns is the universality of what it means to be a father, husband and man.”—Toronto Star
