Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book surveys Aboriginal life and behavior broadly and, for many of the most interesting aspects of the culture, reports in thorough detail (both authors became fully initiated members of the Arunta tribe). Customs relating to marriage, childbirth, vengeance, burial and mourning, the hunt, etc.; ritual actions- the knocking out of teeth, head-biting, mutilation; and beliefs about eclipses, medicine, ancestors, the creation of the world, pregnancy, etc. are described. Remarkable photographs-over 130-show portraits of tribesmen and women, costumed participants in rituals, chipped stone arrowheads, boomerangs and other weapons, sacred wooden and stone objects, and Aboriginal drawings and decorations. Explaining the social organization of the tribes is one of the authors' chief interests. The unusually compex kinship system, found only among Australian Aboriginals, is explored exhaustively. Another large section of the book describes in detail the weeks-long Engwura ceremony of circumcision and subincision."-- Back cover.

Book excerpt: The Native Tribes of Central Australia By Walter Baldwin Spencer Sir Baldwin Spencer (1860-1929) was a British/Australian biologist and anthropologist, best known for his work amongst the indigenous Aboriginal tribes of Australia. After graduating from Exeter College, Oxford in 1884, Spencer was elected a fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, before being appointed the Professor of Biology at the University of Melbourne. In 1896 Spencer joined his friend and co-author Francis James Gillen (1855-1912) to undertake fieldwork during the Aboriginal tribal gathering known as the Engwura. This pioneering volume, first published in 1899, is the result of this fieldwork. Spencer and Gillen were initiated as members of the Arunta tribe and became the first Europeans to witness many tribal customs and social structures. The kinship structures, marriage and burial ceremonies and religious beliefs of several tribes are described. This fascinating volume influenced contemporary ideas concerning palaeolithic society and the origins of art and religion. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Tribes of Central Australia It has been the lot of one of us to spend the greater part of the past twenty years in the centre of the continent, and as sub-protector of the Aborigines he has had exceptional opportunities of coming into contact with, and of gaining the confidence of, the members of the large and important Arunta tribe, amongst whom he has lived, and of which tribe both of us, it may be added, are regarded as fully initiated members. In the month ofjuly, 1894, we met at Alice Springs, when the scientific expedition organised by Mr. W. A. Horn, of Adelaide, visited that part of the continent, and it was then that one of us gave to Dr. E. C. Stirling, the anthropologist of the expedition, notes which have since been published in the anthropological section of the report on the work of the expedition. This report included the results of the informa tion gained up to that time with regard to the Central tribes, and in respect to certain points, we have, to some extent, had to traverse the same ground in order to make our account as complete as possible but it was very evident that in regard to the customs and organisation of the tribe we were then only on the threshold of the inquiry, and at a subsequent time we determined to carry on the work.
