Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sylvan Ontario: A Guide to Our Native Trees and Shrubs IN the very numerous forms of life with which we meet we cannot help noticing that there are all degrees of likeness and difference. We believe that all these forms are in some sense related to each other, and the closer the similarity the closer we consider this relation to be. When such likeness is as exact as we are accustomed to find in Nature, we say that the forms compared are of the. Same kind or Species, and we mark them by the same name, noticing that the individuals reproduced from these continue equally similar to each other and to the parent forms. A number of species plainly related to each other, yet not the same, form a Genus, the plural of this 'latin word being Genera. Thus all our Maples belong to one Genus, though there are five or six species and we have at least a dozen distinct kinds of Willows, all belonging to the same group or Genus in the same way. Similar Genera again are grouped into Families, or Orders, and these again into higher and higher classes, upon which at present we need not dwell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Trees Worth Knowing The beginner doesn't know exactly how and where to begin. There are great collections of trees here and there. The Arnold Arboretum in Boston is the great dendrological Noah's Ark in this country. It contains almost all the trees, American and foreign, which will grow in that region. The Shaw Botanical Garden at St. Louis is the largest midland assemblage of trees. Parks in various cities bring together as large a variety of trees as possible, and these are Often labelled with their English and botani cal names for the benefit of the public. Yet the places for the beginner are his own dooryard, the streets he travels four times a day to his work, and woods for his holiday, though they need not be forests. Arboreta are for his delight when he has gained some acquaintance with the tree families. But not at first. The trees may all be set out in tribes and families and labelled with their scientific names. They will but confuse and discourage him. There is not time to make their acquaintance. They overwhelm with the mere number of kinds. Great arboreta and parks are Very scarce. Trees are every where. The acquaintance Oi trees is within the reach of all. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Trees of the Northern States and Canada: East of the Rocky Mountains The shortness of the period, too, during which the flowers or fruits of certain trees are in their prime, or even exist on the trees, has necessitated close watch. The exact time must' be ascertained by observation, and if, perchance, I miss it I must wait until another year for another opportunity. Then I may find it an off year (imagine my disappointment I), and still another year must be waited. Procuring specimens from lofty tree-tops are trivial ordeals compared with instances like these. Add to these vicissitudes the distribution of our trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Twenty Canadian Forest Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twenty Canadian Forest Trees Classic Reprint written by James Lawler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Canadian Forest Trees The substance of the tree, wood, is used for making houses, barns, ships, furniture, railway cars, implements, fences and many other things, and is also the chief fuel in Canada for heating houses. Some trees are used to make paper and others fur nish us food. Every year wood becomes of greater necessity to mankind. We know this because the price of wood is constantly increasing. Canada is one of the greatest tree-growing coun tries of the world. Many years ago people used to think that some day all the trees in Canada would be cut down and the land covered with farms. They did not know, as we do, that if all the trees in Canada were cut down tomorrow more than half the land could not be used for farms, because it is too hilly, stony, rocky, sandy, or otherwise barren. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaf Key to the Trees, of the Northern States and Canada, and a Botanical Glossary In this Leaf Key we have aimed to include all of the generally accepted native and naturalized trees north of the latitude of the northern boundary of North Carolina and east of the Rocky Mountains. To form a key, however, that would fit all of the unusual or non-typical forms of leaves of each species would seem to be a hopeless task, but to make one fit the typical leaves - such as we consider as distinctive of the various species and by which we recognize them - seems possible and has been here attempted.
