Book Mortality of New Zealand Native Frogs in Captivity

Download or read book Mortality of New Zealand Native Frogs in Captivity written by Stephanie D. Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three species of New Zealand native frogs (Leiopelma archeyi, L. hochstetteri, and L. pakeka) have been held in captivity in various institutions since 2000 as part of a programme to maintain and breed these threatened species. Following the death of a large number of these captive frogs, the Department of Conservation Native Frog Recovery Group decided that an investigation was needed to determine the cause. In this mortality study, we obtained data from captive populations to analyse mortality rates and causes of death for 252 wild-caught Leiopelma spp. These were held in captivity at the University of Canterbury and later transferred to other institutions between 2000 and 2006. Leiopelma archeyi and L. hochstetteri had similar overall average mortality but different yearly mortality patterns, whereas L. pakeka had much lower overall mortality. The major cause of death for L. archeyi and L. hochstetteri was bacterial infection, which was thought to be induced by a combination of husbandry factors, but mainly from oversterilising the substrate. Consequently, Auckland Zoo instigated a change in management, whereby soil was only heated to a temperature and for a length of time that was just sufficient to kill amphibian chytrid. New disease syndromes (skin blisters and muscle deterioration (rhabdomyolysis)) were also detected. Knowledge of disease is an important component of captive husbandry, so that healthy breeding populations can be maintained and we can gain an insight into diseases that may be affecting free-living populations. It is recommended that the staff at each institution undertake a review of all captive mortalities and report back to the Native Frog Recovery Group on an annual basis, so that any husbandry or disease issues that have arisen can be identified quickly.

Book Status of Conservation and Decline of Amphibians

Download or read book Status of Conservation and Decline of Amphibians written by Harold Heatwole and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibians are among the most threatened groups of animals on earth. In part due to their highly permeable skin, amphibians are highly sensitive to environmental changes and pollution and provide an early-warning system of deteriorating environmental conditions. The more we learn about the impact of environmental changes on amphibians, the better we as humans will be able to arrest their demise, and our own. Status of Conservation and Decline of Amphibians brings together the current knowledge on the status of the unique frogs of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific. Although geographically proximate, each region presents unique challenges and opportunities in amphibian research and conservation. This book contributes to an understanding of the current conservation status of the amphibians of each region, aims to stimulate research into halting amphibian declines, and provides a better foundation for making conservation decisions. It is an invaluable reference for environmental and governmental agencies, researchers, policy-makers involved with biodiversity conservation, and the interested public.

Book The Tuatara Lizards and Frogs of New Zealand

Download or read book The Tuatara Lizards and Frogs of New Zealand written by Richard Sharell and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new kind of nature book. Designed for readers of all ages, it is an introduction in combined text and superb photographs to particular group of creatures - in this volume the colourful reptiles and amphibians of New Zealand. The strangest member of this group, an animal found nowhere else on earth, is the tuatara. The tuatara looks like a lizard, but is is not one. It is the only survivor from the age of giant reptiles - the bronchosaurs, the dinosaurs - and it has remained with us for 135 million years practically unchanged: a living example of ancestral reptiles from which we have evolved. No wonder that it should feature so prominently in Maori art and folklore. Mr. Sharell has for many years studied and photographed the tuatara and its distant cousins, New Zealadn's lizards and frogs, and in this book he gives us the fruit of his work. It is at once an authoritative and richly illustrated handbook, and a striking testimony to his conviction that nature study cannot - or should not - be divorced from an appreciation of nature's beauty.
