Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry S. Truman oversaw the beginning of a dramatic shift in the relationship between the U.S. government and Native Americans. Not generally associated with Native Americans or Native American affairs, Truman's presidency marked the end of the Indian New Deal begun under the Roosevelt administration and the start of a policy known as "termination," which anticipated the end of tribalism and the assimilation of all Native Americans by encompassing final compensation for tribal grievances, relocation to urban centers, and a dismantling of the trust relationship between the government and Native American nations. Not generally associated with Native Americans or Native American affairs, Truman's presidency marked the end of the Indian New Deal begun under the Roosevelt administration and the start of a policy known as "termination", which anticipated the end of tribalism and the assimilation of all Native Americans by encompassing final compensation for tribal grievances, relocation to urban centres, and a dismantling of the trust relationship between the government and Native American nations. Truman, influenced by Cold War politics, Republican opposition in Congress, and the growing civil rights movement, attempted to honour the promises of the U.S. government and support tribal self-determination while upholding the broader goals of termination. Drawn from contributions by scholars, activists, attorneys, politicians, and representatives from several Native American nations, this collection considers the immediate effects of termination, as well as its long-term consequences. Rather than leading to the destruction of Native American sovereignty and culture, one of the legacies of termination was the rise of modern Native American activism. And, as Brian Hosmer writes in the introduction, Truman would have appreciated "the resolve demonstrated by Native people, and their efforts toward realising self-sufficiency and self-government".

Book Civil Liberties and the Legacy of Harry S Truman

Download or read book Civil Liberties and the Legacy of Harry S Truman written by Richard Stewart Kirkendall and published by Truman Legacy. This book was released on 2013 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Harry Truman identified himself repeatedly as a champion of civil liberties in the American system of government. Although the pursuit of peace topped his agenda, Communist containment and civil liberties were, in his mind, closely linked. The American Constitution's Bill of Rights was a source of strength that the United States had, but that authoritarian regimes did not. To strengthen respect for civil liberties, the president sought to educate Americans about the great importance of these liberties. Critics did not always value civil liberties as highly as Truman, and he felt that opponents weakened the pursuit of peace by suggesting that America, in the fight against communism, move away from the great model of liberal principles. Contributors in this volume recognise that President Truman had shortcomings in this area, but he balanced concerns about national security and individual liberties, and worked hard to persuade Americans in and out of government that civil liberties must be respected.

Book Israel and the Legacy of Harry S Truman

Download or read book Israel and the Legacy of Harry S Truman written by Michael J. Devine and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When he assumed the presidency in April 1945, Harry S. Truman inherited various international sources of turmoil, including the ambiguity of American policy toward political Zionism. Three years later, President Truman recognized the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, just 11 minutes after the announcement of its existence. These essays explore the methods Truman used to tackle this dilemma - one he is said to have considered more troublesome than almost any other issue plaguing the United States at the time. After 50 years of continuing conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, the legacy of Truman's struggle is reflected in the distinct voices of this collection's contributors, including scholars, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, Israel's representative to the United Nations, and a White House aide during Truman's presidency.

Book Foreign Aid and the Legacy of Harry S Truman

Download or read book Foreign Aid and the Legacy of Harry S Truman written by Raymond H. Geselbracht and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Harry S Truman believed that if he were remembered for anything, it would be for his foreign aid programs. Despite the fragmented appearance of the Truman administration's various foreign aid programs, they were all inspired by a clear policy: "to assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way". From the Marshall Plan to the Truman Doctrine to the Point Four program, this volume explores Truman's legacy in institutionalising foreign aid as a feature of American diplomacy. The work of Truman's programs was completed before he left office, but his idea that the United States should assist underdeveloped or developing countries to build up their economies shaped United States foreign policy for the next sixty years and beyond.

Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of Harry S. Truman, whose presidency included momentous events from the atomic bombing of Japan to the outbreak of the Cold War and the Korean War, told by America’s beloved and distinguished historian. The life of Harry S. Truman is one of the greatest of American stories, filled with vivid characters—Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Wallace Truman, George Marshall, Joe McCarthy, and Dean Acheson—and dramatic events. In this riveting biography, acclaimed historian David McCullough not only captures the man—a more complex, informed, and determined man than ever before imagined—but also the turbulent times in which he rose, boldly, to meet unprecedented challenges. The last president to serve as a living link between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, Truman’s story spans the raw world of the Missouri frontier, World War I, the powerful Pendergast machine of Kansas City, the legendary Whistle-Stop Campaign of 1948, and the decisions to drop the atomic bomb, confront Stalin at Potsdam, send troops to Korea, and fire General MacArthur. Drawing on newly discovered archival material and extensive interviews with Truman’s own family, friends, and Washington colleagues, McCullough tells the deeply moving story of the seemingly ordinary “man from Missouri” who was perhaps the most courageous president in our history.
