Book Native American Rites of Passage The Process of Change and Transition

Download or read book Native American Rites of Passage The Process of Change and Transition written by Casey Church and published by Cherohala Press. This book was released on 2018-09-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian message and discipleship training have often come with the cultural baggage of the non-native Christians who have worked among Native populations. While spiritual formation is the ultimate goal of presenting Christ's message, the message has often been rejected as the White Man's Gospel. This study examines traditional Native Amerian rituals and demonstrates how these rituals can deepen Native American identity and help Native Christians grow in Christ. The study is presented within the context of two Native American ministries: The Brethren in Christ Alcohol Overcomers program and Wiconi International and its Family Camp. These contextual ministries have started to help Native Americans see how their own forms can have new meaning in helping them become stronger Christians. When accompanied by the contextual use of Native rites such as the Sweat Lodge Ceremony, the Pipe Ceremony, Powwow dancing, and singing with the drum, participants who go through these rites of passage experience an increased sense of spiritual well-being and self- esteem through the authentic Native expression of their Christian faith. This revised version of Church's doctoral dissertation will benefit anyone who has a serious commitment to making disciples in Native American communities.

Book Rites of Passage

Book excerpt: This study will focus on the change process in relation to understanding personal and organizational changes and transition issues that impact many ministries. The research will first concentrate on the changes that Native men experience during the liminal stage of the Brethren in Christ Overcomers alcohol treatment program in Farmington, New Mexico. This study also takes Victor Turner’s concepts relating to the “Rites of Passage” and compares the transitional issues in two Native American ministry case studies. I further explore how in the Native world, Rites of Passage are closely connected to the rituals and ceremonies they have developed in order to cope with a world full of continual change and transition. My research is a subjective, qualitative analysis which reveals a unique approach to change and transition in the clients’ lives at the Overcomers program. The findings are also organized into themes related to the transitions the Wiconi International ministry is encountering following the passing of the president and cofounder, the late Dr. Richard Twiss. The methodology for this study is conducted using quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected from interviews and survey questionnaires. The change and transition models are adapted from Everett Rogers, William Bridges, and Victor Turner. The purpose is not to be prescriptive but to describe several consideration of the potential actions ministry leaders can employ when faced with change and transition. It is my hope that the section describing the praxis involved in contextual ritual and ceremony—and the comparison of the ministry approaches used by the Navajo Brethren in Christ Overcomers program and Wiconi International—stimulate the use of iii these ideas in other ministries and increase their effectiveness. Based on this data, the reader can use the findings and adapt them to changing situations in their unique ministry areas. I specifically address the issues leaders face as they encounter change dynamics. It is my desire that this study be a useful tool for leaders and organizations going through transitions.

Book excerpt: “Punctuating your purpose” is what T-Time - A Rites of Passage Manual for the Adolescent Female is about. This initiation guide book for women who desire to give young females a powerful spiritually charged, emotionally invigorating welcome into womanhood was born from a fusion of Native American and West African customs. This marriage has created a celebratory ritual, which puts rites of passage initiates and participants on a spiritual journey to illuminate their souls for a lifetime. Historical references used in T-Time (“transition time”) regarding various cultural rituals allow the reader-turned-facilitator to define the process young girls experience as they go from grade school to middle school -- from baptism to praise dance -- and from daddy’s little angel to a budding princess. This generally occurs with little fanfare and no outstanding life-altering ritual. T-Time will change that. In this book women are encouraged, through a series of cleansing rituals, aromatic meditations, vigorous prayer, laying on of hands, libation, charges and divination to boldly declare to their flowering girls, “You are now a woman!” The upward movement from “Girl” to “You-go-girl” to “Woman” should culminate in an intense but exhilarating T-Time ceremony not to be missed.

Book Ritual A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Ritual A Very Short Introduction written by Barry Stephenson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ritual is part of what it means to be human. Like sports, music, and drama, ritual defines and enriches culture, putting those who practice it in touch with sources of value and meaning larger than themselves. Ritual is unavoidable, yet it holds a place in modern life that is decidedly ambiguous. What is ritual? What does it do? Is it useful? What are the various kinds of ritual? Is ritual tradition bound and conservative or innovative and transformational? Alongside description of a number of specific rites, this Very Short Introduction explores ritual from both theoretical and historical perspectives. Barry Stephenson focuses on the places where ritual touches everyday life: in politics and power; moments of transformation in the life cycle; as performance and embodiment. He also discusses the boundaries of ritual, and how and why certain behaviors have been studied as ritual while others have not. Stephenson shows how ritual is an important vehicle for group and identity formation; how it generates and transmits beliefs and values; how it can be used to exploit and oppress; and how it has served as a touchstone for thinking about cultural origins and historical change. Encompassing the breadth and depth of modern ritual studies, Barry Stephenson's Very Short Introduction also develops a narrative of ritual's place in social and cultural life. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book Rites of Passage

Download or read book Rites of Passage written by Dallas McKay and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rites of Passage is a book about using ceremonies to honor and validate those you care about when they most need it - when they are confronting major changes. It is about how YOU can offer meaningful support to someone who is going through a life transition, and the way you design this support is unique to that person. Rites of Passage emphasize strengths and the capability to negotiate the change and succeed in the next phase of the person's life. Weddings, coming-of-age events, retirement, blending families, starting a new business, moving, graduating, divorce, death - life offers many challenges. These rite of passage ceremonies, simple or complex, have amazing positive impact for all involved. I have seen this over and over. My hope is that you will see how easy (and inspiring) it is to create a ceremony, and how very meaningful and supportive that ceremony is to the person facing change. Ready or not, here comes change: from puberty to parenting to the empty nest -- it comes. Rites of passage are a way to acknowledge and celebrate the resiliency of the person making a transition. A rite of passage deals with the past, successfully negotiates the change, and embraces a positive future. It uses symbolic objects to set the stage and symbolic activities to move through it. It works with the conscious and the subconscious. This book illustrates how to lead the honoree through a thoughtful turning away from the past and into a confident embrace of the future. Readers will find many ideas, samples, and templates for designing ceremony tailored to the event and the honoree's specific culture, context and beliefs. Give it a try! You've nothing to lose and so much to gain. A rite of passage event is a gift to all involved, a gift that lasts.
