Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nationalism and Education: Since 1789, a Social and Political History of Modern Education In the large view, education is public policy, related insep arably to economic conditions, social organization, and politi cal administration. The educator who would wisely plan the activities and the management of the schools, must pay attention to the major conditions of life outside the schools, and must be able to evaluate educational procedure in terms of far-reaching and broadly inclusive social purpose. No less must the statesman who would build a just, efficient, pros perons, and patriotic nation, enlist the schools in his efforts and utilize them to effect his aims. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and Nationalism in Education: Syllabus and Readings for a Course in History of Education From the French Revolution to the Present Time The earliest stage of political development occurred with the fixing of tribal groups in a definite habitat. The earliest form of this was the city state with its environing dependencies. These g early states looked upon all other groups as hostile and unworthy of existence, except as they became subordinated. This incor poration was usually accomplished by force, which process tended to destroy the distinctive cultural features of the minor; groups. In other words, the groups expanding by military power led by dynastic ability and ambition looked upon political organ ization as all-inclusive. With the Roman Empire this tendency became substantially a reality. With the Christianization of the Roman Empire the ecclesiastical ideal and pretention paral leled the political one and both became coterminous with civilization. This belief in the universal scope of political organization constituted in form the world's political theory long after the actual conditions were changed. The Holy Roman Empire which expressed this theory in the early modern period was only destroyed by Napoleon in 1804. The chief force in rendering this organization a mere form was that of growing nationalism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nationalism and History Education

Download or read book Nationalism and History Education written by Rachel D. Hutchins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History education, by nature, transmits an ‘official’ version of national identity. National identity is not a fixed entity, and controversy over history teaching is an essential part of the process of redefining and regenerating the nation. France and the United States have in particular experienced demographic and cultural shifts since the 1960s that have resulted in intense debates over national identity. This volume examines how each country’s national history is represented in primary schools’ social studies textbooks and curricula, and how they handle contemporary issues of ethnicity, diversity, gender, socio-economic inequality, and patriotism. By analyzing each country separately and comparatively, it demonstrates how various groups (including academics, politicians and citizen activists) have influenced education, and how the process of writing and rewriting history perpetuates a nation. Drawing on empirical studies of the United States and France, this volume provides insight into broader nationalist processes and instructive principles for similar countries in the modern world.

Book Nationalism in Education

Download or read book Nationalism in Education written by Klaus Schleicher and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1993 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comparative Reader, with authors from 6 continents and 9 countries analyses, to what extent the nation concept is still at the heart of international organizations and agreements, under which circumstances nationalism rose in specific regions and cultures at different times, and, to what extent education was influenced by or used for nationalistic doctrines and policies. Case studies as well as systematic analyses illustrate, that education can hardly change its own socioeconomic and political context. However, education and educational policy can support a prevention of and balance to nationalism in the long run, if they counteract stereotyping and scapegoating, familiarize with overlapping and competing loyalties, and, encourage human rights, international cooperation and cultural relationalism.
