  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Modern Japan written by J.E. Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J E Thomas examines the historical roots of Japanese social structures and preoccupations and he sets these within the broad chronological framework of Japan's political and military development. The book can thus serve as an introduction to modern Japan in a more general sense - but its focus throughout is on the people themselves. Professor Thomas gives due attention to the Japanese mainstream; but he also discusses those other sections of the community which have traditionally been underprivileged or marginalised - most obviously women, but also minority groups and outcasts - and the Japanese attitude to foreigners beyond her shores.

Book Japan and Education

Download or read book Japan and Education written by M. Stephens and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-03-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese take education very seriously. They see economic success and social wellbeing as intimately tied-up with such provision. Perhaps no other country can equal the level of commitment of the Japanese to education. This book explores the development of such attitudes, the history of Japan's response to them, and the modern debates and initiatives as government and people wrestle with contemporary changes and prepare for a tomorrow which they see as making education even more central to a country's health. Those outside Japan who wish to understand its economic success will find much to give them thought within these pages.

Book Japanese Women in Science and Engineering

Download or read book Japanese Women in Science and Engineering written by Naonori Kodate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) varies greatly from country to country, and the number of Japanese women in these fields remains relatively few. This prompts us to ask why the proportion of female scientists in Japan is still remarkably low and what measures the government, universities and research institutes are taking to address this issue. This book sheds light on historical developments and the current gender equality situation in Japan, through the lens of women in STEM. It shows how a policy of gender equality in science and engineering has been introduced through the coordinated efforts of academia, scientific societies and the government, and how this has led to a slow but steady increase in female representation. The book draws on extensive data including interviews with government officials, scientists and educators in Japan to provide a revealing case study on how the underrepresentation of women in the fields of science, technology and engineering has been approached and dealt with by a national government. It heralds a new era for female scientists, by showcasing several programmes undertaken by government, universities and national research institutions to support multiple career paths for and the progression of female scientists in Japan. Tracing the historical development of Japan’s policies towards women in science and education, this book will be welcomed by students and scholars interested in Japanese studies, comparative social policy, gender studies, employment and the history of science and technology.

Download or read book The Mountain is Moving written by Patricia Morley and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imperial times in Japan, women were subservient inferiors; in theory they were liberated by the democratic constitution imposed by the US after World War II; but, in real-life Japan, change is glacially slow. Here, that slow-changing reality is juxtaposed with the fast-moving aspirations of Japanese women. The author achieves this through wide-ranging interviews with Japanese women, and by using a range of contemporay Japanese literature.

Book Hospitals and the nursing profession Lessons from franco japanese comparisons

Download or read book Hospitals and the nursing profession Lessons from franco japanese comparisons written by Philippe Mossé and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2011 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hospital systems throughout the developed world are undergoing waves of reform which seek to address multiple challenges of intensifying acuity, such as population ageing, technological advance, heightened expectations on the part of increasingly informed patients, the reduction of public spending deficits and the specialisation of staff, especially nurses, as well as the difficulty in establishing appropriate incentives for change and improved performance. Within such a context, the purpose of this book is to analyse the interaction between the nursing professions and hospital institutions in France and Japan, taking as its starting point the conviction that comparative analysis of empirical reality in each of these countries will provide new insights into the transformations currently taking place. To that end, the material in this study has been contributed by an international, interdisciplinary team of experts, combining economic, sociological, political and historical perspectives, which are brought to bear upon evidence from original research carried out in both countries. The findings reveal that the relationship between the nursing profession and hospital structures in Japan is characterised by the predominance of a domestic logic, rooted in dependence upon the institution and the promotion of supposedly "feminine" qualities, in sharp contrast with the French situation, where industrial and professional logics prevail, entailing specialisation, independent initiative and increasing workloads. From this perspective, the future development of the nursing profession in Japan is inextricably linked to the forms taken by the process of women's emancipation, whereas in France, it is the evolution of hospital structures, of the position of nurses in the healthcare system and of the division of labour within the world of medicine which emerge as the determining factors. In order to highlight French and Japanese particularities for the Anglophone reader, the book also features numerous socio-historical points of comparison with developments in the United Kingdom.
