Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Gentle Legions, Richard Carter analyzed the large voluntary health organizations in America. He set out to analyze the impact of this “humanitarian and social movement” and the struggle between the health organization movement to maintain independent campaigns and the United Fund movement to incorporate these organizations into a single community campaign. The issues he identified in the late 1950s are still major issues today. Carter believes that voluntary activity is crucial to American democracy.

Book Voluntary Health Agency Support of Health Research and Development

Download or read book Voluntary Health Agency Support of Health Research and Development written by Mary Ann Hoff and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the role of voluntary health agencies in support of medical and health-related research and development. Health voluntaries are associations which solicit financial support from the general public to carry on activities which benefit the health of the community. Such program activities include medical and health-related R&D, health education, and medical services activities. Voluntary health agencies are among the organizations which meet the tax exemption standards of Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, allowing them a status as nonprofit organizations which operate for charitable, scientific, religious, or educational purposes. To the layman, voluntary health agencies are charities. The study reported here provides a profile of Voluntary Health Agency support of health R&D. The early sections provide descriptions of several major features of such support. The last section summarizes a test of the feasibility of using regression analysis for estimating Voluntaries' expenditures for years in the immediate future. The study was written in the early months of 1975 before final figures for 1974 expenditures of the health agencies were available. Projections, therefore, focus on 1974 and 1975.

Book Who Will Keep the Public Healthy

Download or read book Who Will Keep the Public Healthy written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioterrorism, drug-resistant disease, transmission of disease by global travel . . . there's no shortage of challenges facing America's public health officials. Men and women preparing to enter the field require state-of-the-art training to meet these increasing threats to the public health. But are the programs they rely on provide the high caliber professional training they require? Who Will Keep the Public Healthy? provides an overview of the past, present, and future of public health education, assessing its readiness to provide the training and education needed to prepare men and women to face 21st century challenges. Advocating an ecological approach to public health, the Institute of Medicine examines the role of public health schools and degree-granting programs, medical schools, nursing schools, and government agencies, as well as other institutions that foster public health education and leadership. Specific recommendations address the content of public health education, qualifications for faculty, availability of supervised practice, opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and education, cooperation with government agencies, and government funding for education. Eight areas of critical importance to public health education in the 21st century are examined in depth: informatics, genomics, communication, cultural competence, community-based participatory research, global health, policy and law, and public health ethics. The book also includes a discussion of the policy implications of its ecological framework.
