Book National Values Regarding War Captives and Their Use as Political Pawns

Download or read book National Values Regarding War Captives and Their Use as Political Pawns written by Daniel R. Beirne and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the political values that some of the present world powers have placed on the loss or gain of captives in recent wars might help to shed some light on how these nations might act in future international negotiations during the 'Cold War'. Since the armed forces of the United States are involved directly or indirectly in defending large portions of the globe, American servicemen become military targets and when captured often become pawns in the great game of international politics. The paper will show from experiences in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War as well as some other recent conflicts that political use of war prisoners is on the increase and that attitudes toward these prisoners are related closely to a nation's attitude toward its own people. Book They Knew They Were Pilgrims

Download or read book They Knew They Were Pilgrims written by John G. Turner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious new history of the Pilgrims and Plymouth Colony, published for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s landing In 1620, separatists from the Church of England set sail across the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower. Understanding themselves as spiritual pilgrims, they left to preserve their liberty to worship God in accordance with their understanding of the Bible. There exists, however, an alternative, more dispiriting version of their story. In it, the Pilgrims are religious zealots who persecuted dissenters and decimated the Native peoples through warfare and by stealing their land. The Pilgrims’ definition of liberty was, in practice, very narrow. Drawing on original research using underutilized sources, John G. Turner moves beyond these familiar narratives in his sweeping and authoritative new history of Plymouth Colony. Instead of depicting the Pilgrims as otherworldly saints or extraordinary sinners, he tells how a variety of English settlers and Native peoples engaged in a contest for the meaning of American liberty.

Book En Gendering the War on Terror

Download or read book En Gendering the War on Terror written by Kim Rygiel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war on terror has been raging for many years now, and subsequently there is a growing body of literature examining the development, motivation and effects of this US-led aggression. Virtually absent from these accounts is an examination of the central role that gender, race, class and sexuality play in the war on terror. This lack of attention reflects a continued resistance by analysts to acknowledge and engage identity-related social issues as central elements within global politics. As this conflict spreads and deepens, it is more important than ever to examine how diverse international actors are using the war on terror as an opportunity to reinforce existing gendered, raced, classed and sexualized inter/national relations. This book examines the official war stories being told to the international community about why and against whom the war on terror is being waged. The book will benefit students, scholars and practitioners in the areas of international relations, women's studies and cultural studies.
