Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2004 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF:04), conducted by RTI International (RTI) and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), is a nationally representative study that collects data regarding the characteristics, workload, and career paths of full-and part-time postsecondary faculty and instructional staff at public and private not-for-profit 2-and 4-year institutions in the United States. Conducted previously in 1988, 1993, and 1999, it serves a continuing need for data on faculty and instructional staff. For the first time, NSOPF:04 is being conducted as a component study of the 2004 National Study of Faculty and Students (NSoFaS:04). The student component--the 2004 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:04)--is a nationally representative study of students enrolled in all levels of postsecondary education. Historically, there has been considerable overlap in the institutions selected for participation in NSOPF and NPSAS; therefore, institution sampling and contacting activities for both studies were coordinated to help minimize response burden on institutions and to improve data collection efficiency. This report describes the methodology and findings of NSOPF:04, which took place during the 2003-04 academic year. A field test, conducted in the 2002-03 academic year, was used to plan, implement, and evaluate methodological procedures, instruments, and systems proposed for use in the full-scale study. The 2004 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty Field Test Methodology Report (Heuer et al. 2004) is available from NCES. This methodology report is designed to report solely for NSOPF:04. NPSAS:04 procedures and results--provided in a separate report--are discussed here only as they impact or overlap with those outlined for NSOPF:04. Appended are: (1) Sampling Details; (2) Technical Review Panel; (3) Facsimile Instruments; (4) Item Crosswalks; (5) Endorsements; (6) Contacting Materials; (7) Training Materials; (8) Quality of Lists; (9) Nonresponse Bias Analysis; (10) CIP Code Mapping; (11) Analysis Variables; (12) GEM Adjustment Procedure; and (13) Design Effects. (Contains 44 tables and 6 figures.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the methods and procedures used for the 1999 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF:99). As did the first 2 cycles of this survey, NSOPF:99 serves the continuing need for data on faculty and other instructional personnel. NSOPF:99 used a sample of 960 institutions and 28,576 full- and part-time faculty employed at these institutions. The sample was designed to allow detailed comparisons and high levels of precision at both the institution and faculty levels. The sampled institutions represent all public and private not-for-profit Title IV- participating, degree-granting institutions in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Both the sample of institutions and that of faculty were stratified, systematic samples. In addition to the institution and faculty samples, a third sample of 19,123 faculty members was selected from the initial sample for intensive follow-up. NSOPF:99 involved a multistage effort to collect data from the sampled faculty, with faculty sampled in 7 waves. This report also discusses issues of quality control, item nonresponse, and discrepancies in faculty counts. Eleven appendixes contain supplemental information and instruments used in the surveys. (Contains 57 tables and 11 figures . ).

Book Salary Promotion and Tenure Status of Minority and Women Faculty in U S Colleges and Universities

Download or read book Salary Promotion and Tenure Status of Minority and Women Faculty in U S Colleges and Universities written by Michael T. Nettles and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 2000 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, using data from the 1992-93 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty, examines differences among postsecondary faculty by gender and by race/ethnicity. Comparisons were made on several human capital variables (education/experience) and structural variables (academic discipline/institution type), as well as for faculty outcomes (salary/tenure/rank). A multivariate analysis of factors associated with salary was also conducted. The study found differences between male and female faculty members in salary and rank, with female full-time faculty averaging lower salaries than males. Age, education, and experience also differed by gender, with female full-time faculty having lower educational levels and less experience than male faculty. Differences among racial/ethnic groups were also noted: white faculty generally had higher salaries and were more likely to be tenured and to be full professors than black faculty; and Black, non-Hispanic full-time faculty were less likely than white, non-Hispanic faculty to have higher salaries, tenure, and full professorships. Sections include an introduction, which notes prior research on the determinants of faculty salary, tenure, and rank, and methodology; sections examining representation of faculty by gender and by race/ethnicity; a section on the multivariate analysis; and a conclusion. Appended are technical notes, standard error tables, and additional data. (Contains 44 references.) (CH)

Book National Study of Postsecondary Faculty NSOPF

Download or read book National Study of Postsecondary Faculty NSOPF written by R. E. Heuer and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the methodology and findings of the NSOPF:04 field test that took place during the 2002?03 academic year. The NSOPF:04 field test was used to plan, implement, and evaluate methodological procedures, instruments, and systems proposed for use in the full-scale study scheduled for the 2003-04 academic year. The field test was particularly important in this cycle of NSOPF, because of several changes from prior NSOPF data collections. These included: (1) the combination of NSOPF and NPSAS into NSoFaS:04, which had important implications for the NSOPF:04 institution sample design and institution contacting procedures; (2) eliminating the paper self-administered survey mode of response; (3) using integrated web/computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) instruments; (4) shortening the faculty questionnaire; and (5) implementing measures to shorten the data collection period, such as early institution contacting and use of incentives for early response. This field test methodology report is designed to summarize the findings with regard to NSOPF for each of these changes. The methodology and findings of the NPSAS:04 field test are provided in a separate report. Appended are: (1) Technical Review Panel; (2) Facsimile Instruments; (3) Item Crosswalks; (4) Contacting Materials; (5) Training Materials; (6) CIP Code Mapping; and (7) TRP Meeting Summary.
