Book The Dawn of Canada s Century

Download or read book The Dawn of Canada s Century written by Gordon Darroch and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Wilfrid Laurier famously claimed that the twentieth century would be Canada's century and, indeed, its opening decade witnessed remarkable territorial, demographic, and social transformations. Yet the lives of those who lived and laboured to fashion these changes remain largely hidden from historical view. The Dawn of Canada's Century presents close and systematic interpretations of everyday lives based on the first national sample of the 1911 census. Written by many of Canada's leading historical researchers, The Dawn of Canada's Century demonstrates the wide-ranging and revealing social histories made possible by the new Canadian Century Research Infrastructure, an innovative database of national samples of decennial census microdata, from 1911 through 1951. This revealing collection sheds new light on topics including identity and language, the socio-demography of aboriginal populations, national labour market dynamics, earnings distributions, social mobility, gender and immigration experiences, and the technologies of census taking. Situating early twentieth-century Canada within international historical population studies, these essays provide new ways to understand individuals' lives and connect them to larger structural changes. Book Censuses and Census Takers

Download or read book Censuses and Census Takers written by Gunnar Thorvaldsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the international development of the census by comparing the history of census taking on all continents and in many countries. The timeframe is wide, from male censuses in the Bible to current censuses covering the whole population. There is a focus on the efforts and destinies of census takers and the development of methods used to collect information into the census questionnaires. The book highlights international cooperation in census taking, as well as how computerized access to census data facilitates genealogical studies and statistical research on both historical and contemporary societies. It deals with such questions as "Why did the French and British gentry block efforts at census taking in the 18th century?"; "What role did German censuses play during Holocaust?"; Why were the Soviet census directors executed as part of the Moscow processes?"; "Why did US states sue the Census Bureau in the 1970s?"; "How do wars and revolutions affect census taking?". The text ends by discussing whether the days of the population census as we know it are numbered, since countries exceedingly construct censuses by combining information from population registers rather than with questionnaires.

Book Fourth Census of Canada 1901 Vol 1

Download or read book Fourth Census of Canada 1901 Vol 1 written by Canada Census Office and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Census of Canada, 1901, Vol. 1: Population The same observation will apply to the mortality schedules, the number of inquiries being 10 in 1891 and 15 in 1901. In the farm schedules 75 questions were asked in 1891 and 127 in 1901. In those of the latter are included four questions relating to farm buildings, 12 to classified areas of farm land, 22 to orchard trees, vines and fruits, 37 to field crops, 26 to live stock and animal products, and 23 to values of lands, buildings, field and fruit crops and farm labour. And as no system of agricultural enumeration is satisfactory which does not take account of the areas devoted to agricultural purposes, the schedules are framed to procure as far as practicable the acreage as well as the production of every crop. In the case of orchards and vineyards, however, extent alone may be misleading, as a growth of several years is necessary to mature them for fruitage, and therefore the inquiry extends to the number of bearing and non-bearing trees and vines. Provision has been made for the first time in a Dominion Census for collecting figures of farm values, and it can be promised that the data obtained will present striking confirmation of the greatness of our agricultural industry and of the leading place it occupies in the development of national wealth. In this Census no attempt has been made to collect the production of home-made fabrics and cheese, for as a result of the factory system these domestic industries have become nearly extinct. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Turner (1871-1961) was a capable but controversial Canadian general who played a critical role in the development of the Canadian Corps up to 1917 and contributed significantly to its success thereafter. Despite his many accomplishments (including being awarded the Victoria Cross), Turner is often portrayed as a political appointee and repeated failure - representations that ignore, minimize, or misconstrue his successes as a combat commander and head of Canadian forces in England. In The Embattled General, William Stewart reveals Turner's tactical, operational, and administrative contributions to the Canadian war effort. Uniquely, Turner held senior commands in both combat arms and administration. Stewart narrates and analyzes Turner's successes and failures in the Boer War and the First World War's battles of Ypres, Festubert, St Eloi, and the Somme. He also studies Turner's career after his transfer to command Canadian forces in England in December 1916, where Turner reformed an administration in chaos. After the war, Turner post-war played a key role in the formation of the Royal Canadian Legion. Based on exhaustive research from over 1,200 volumes of material, including many previously untouched sources, The Embattled General provides a balanced and just re-evaluation of Turner, identifying his merits as well as his flaws.
