Peter does not like being bored, so he comes up with a way to have some festive fun--he'll celebrate a different holiday each day! He even rates them on a scale of 1 to 10. But when he wakes up one morning to discover there isn't any holiday, he realizes he'll have to take matters into his own hands and make up his own! That's easier said than done, though, and nothing seems to go right--until Peter realizes that even a regular, average, ordinary day can be something worth celebrating.

Book excerpt: An ordinary day in an ordinary neighborhood turns out to be quite extraordinary in this moving story about the circle of life. It’s an average day in the neighborhood—children play, roses are watered, and a crow watches over it all. But then two visitors arrive at two houses, one to help a family say hello to a new baby and one to help a family say goodbye to a beloved pet. This sensitive picture book takes a gentle look at life, death, the bonds of family, and the extraordinary moments that make ordinary days so special.

Book The Transforming Power of the Nuns

Download or read book The Transforming Power of the Nuns written by Mary Peckham Magray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-04 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Peckham Magray argues that the Irish Catholic cultural revolution in the nineteenth century was effected not only by male elites, as previous scholarship has claimed, but also by the most overlooked and underestimated women in Ireland: the nuns. Once thought to be merely passive servants of the male clerical hierarchy, women's religious orders were in fact at the very center of the creation of a devout Catholic culture in Ireland. Often well-educated, articulate, and evangelical, nuns were much more social and ambitious than traditional stereotypical views have held. They used their wealth and their authority to effect changes in both the religious practices and daily activity of the larger Irish Catholic population, and by doing so, Magray argues, deserve a far larger place in the Irish historical record than they have previously been accorded. Magray's innovative work challenges some of the most widely held assumptions of social history in nineteenth-century Ireland. It will be of interest to scholars and students of Irish history, religious history, women's studies, and sociology.

Goodwin effectively melds these details and stories into an unforgettable and intimate portrait of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt and of the time during which a new, modern America was born.

Book An Extraordinary Year of Ordinary Days

Download or read book An Extraordinary Year of Ordinary Days written by Susan Wittig Albert and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In An Extraordinary Year of Ordinary Days, best-selling mystery novelist Susan Wittig Albert invites us to revisit one of the most tumultuous years in recent memory, 2008, through the lens of 365 ordinary days in which her reading, writing, and thinkingabout issues in the wider world--from wars and economic recession to climate change--caused her to reconsider and reshape daily practices in her personal life. Albert's journal provides an engaging account of how the business of being a successful working writer blends with her rural life in the Texas Hill Country and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. As her eclectic daily reading ranges across topics from economics, food production, and oil and energy policy to poetry, place, and the writinglife, Albert becomes increasingly concerned about the natural world and the threats facing it, especially climate change and resource depletion. Asking herself, 'What does it mean? And what should I do about it",' she determines practical steps to take, such as growing more food in her garden, and also helps us to readers make sense of these issues and consider what our own responses might be. A thoughtful and thought-provoking 'book of days,' amplified with reading lists and quotations from a wide diversity of writers, An Extraordinary Year of Ordinary Days is a must-have addition for everyone's collection of writers' journals"--Cover, p. 4.
