Book excerpt: Gathered from various sources, the National Register of Historic Places Collection consists of copies of forms and reports on historic sites of Texas under consideration for inclusion on the National Register, the federal program that recognizes significant historic and archaeological resources. The bulk of the material was gathered and produced by historian Maria Pfeiffer in documenting sites. Most of the locations represented are buildings, but also included are bridges and archaeological sites. The nomination forms generally include information on location, the architecture of a structure, date of construction, its use over time, and the background of the principals involved in its construction or use. Sites in this series that are extensively documented include a multiple-resource nomination for Angelina County, a Blanco, Texas historic district, the west Texas mining town of Terlingua, multiple resources in east and south Dallas, multiple resources in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, the Houston Heights area of Houston, archaeological resources in the Indian Hot Springs area of Hudspeth County, multiple resources in Nacogdoches, multiple resources in Weatherford, the Plemons-Eakle and Wolflin neighborhoods of Amarillo, multiple resources in Abilene, the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin, and multiple resources in the towns of Brenham, Burton and Wharton. Forms gathered from other sources include a multiple-property description of historic bridges of Texas and two versions of a multiple-resource nomination for the rural area along the San Antonio River, west of Goliad. The nomination forms and reports found in this collection were produced at various stages in the review process, including preliminary review by the Texas Historical Commission, and are not necessarily in their final form.
