Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams West Pond Outlet MA 00186 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Gloucester Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impounding structure at West Pond is a 123-foot long, 12-foot high earthfill dam with an overflow spillway at the east abutment. The spillway is located at the east abutment of the dam and consists of a notched ungated concrete weir with an overall length of 16 feet. The low point on the top of the dam is lower than the unnotched portion of the spillway. Based on the visual inspection of the site and a review of the limited data available on the dam, the dam is considered to be in poor condition and is in need of extensive repair work. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: moderate seepage below the toe of the dam; severe erosion of the upstream slope exposing the core wall; erosion of the top and downstream slope of the dam, localized buldging along the downstream slope; lack of a low level outlet; separation of the training walls from the spillway; seepage around and beneath the spillway; brush, timber, and debris in the discharge channel; and trees and vegetation growing on the slopes of the dam. The peak test flood outflow of 107 cfs will overtop the dam by a maximum of 1.3 feet. The spillway can discharge only 1.1 percent of the test flood before the dam is overtopped.

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lee Pond Dam MA 00891 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Uxbridge Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Program written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lee Pond Dam consists of an earthen embankment with a natural spillway and a vertical stone masonry wall along two short sections of the downstream face. The embankment has a minimum top width of 15 ft. and a maximum height of 25 ft. The overall length of the dam is 870 ft., including the natural spillway at the right end of the dam which is about 15 ft. wide at normal pool elevation. The outlet works consist of an inoperable sluice gate located about 250 ft. from the left end of the dam. The dam impounds Lee Pond, which is used for recreational purposes. Maximum storage capacity at the top of dam is 220 acre-feet. Based on visual inspection and a review of all available pertinent data, the dam is considered to be in poor condition. Features that could effect the structural integrity of the dam are seepage at the downstream toe of the dam, erosion and slumping of dam slopes, extensive tree growth on the dam slopes and animal burrows on the crest and downstream face. The calculated test flood inflow of about 660 cfs results in a routed outflow of about 650 cfs. The spillway passes 100% of the test flood outflow with a freeboard of about 3 ft.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Meetinghouse Pond Dam MA 01018 Merrimack River Basin Westminster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Meetinghouse Pond Dam MA 01018 Merrimack River Basin Westminster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meetinghouse Pond Dam comprises two earthen embankments with an included spillway. The major embankment, the dam, is approximately 230 feet long and 15 feet high. The other embankment, the dike, is approximately 170 feet long and approximately 6 feet high. It is located to the north of the dam and includes a masonry spillway with wooden flashboards. The dam is in good to fair condition. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway can safely pass the test flood provided the flashboards are not in place; otherwise the spillway dike will be overtopped. Recommendations for remedial work include the clearing of brush and trees from the dike, dam, spillway and discharge channel; the filling of animal burrows; the providing of additional riprap protection; the re-shaping of the dam crest to limit vehicle traffic; and performing maintenance work on the spillway and gate house. Additional investigations of the spillway dike are recommended to determine if seepage is present at high water levels and to determine and modify as necessary the freeboard.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Chaffin Pond Dam MA 00621 Merrimack River Basin Holden Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Chaffin Pond Dam MA 00621 Merrimack River Basin Holden Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaffin Pond Dam is actually a section of roadway embankment approximately 135 ft. long, 11 ft. high and with a minimum width of 100 ft. Three submerged culvert outlets pass through the dam between upstream and downstream headwalls, allowing the water level to be the same on both sides of the dam. The control entrance to the assumed 30-in. diameter outlet on the left side has slots for stoplogs; however, none are in place. The control for a 4-ft. box culvert in the center is an open wood gate. The third outlet culvert is also gated but apparently blocked. Water from Chaffin Pond flows to outlet works at a second pond downstream from the dam where water is drawn for hydraulic research purposes. The dam is in poor condition, based on a visual examination of the structure. The headwalls have experienced major structural failures and the potential for a collapse of the upstream headwall with possible obstruction of flow to the outlet does exist. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the test flood would surcharge the pond by 680 acre-ft. and raise the pond level to about 4.2 ft. below the top of the dam. Therefore, no overtopping would be expected.
