Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Overlook Reservoir Dam and Dike Dam MA 00876 Dike MA 01335 Merrimack River Basin Fitchburg Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Overlook Reservoir Dam and Dike Dam MA 00876 Dike MA 01335 Merrimack River Basin Fitchburg Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overlook Reservoir Dam is a 370 foot long, 47 foot high, earth embankment structure with a masonry core wall and a stone masonry gatehouse. There is a separate 900 foot long, 25 foot high dike with an 10 foot long concrete channel spillway, located along the northern part of the reservoir. The visual inspection indicated the dam and dike to be in generally fair condition. Heavy vegetation, animal burrows, surficial sloughing and erosion were observed on the side slopes of the dam. Excessive tree growth and seepage was observed at the dike. Leakage into the valve chamber located upstream of the chlorination building was observed and the functionability of the control valves at the facility are questionable. The test flood outflow requires only 5 percent of the spillways capacity. Therefore, neither the dam or dike would be overtopped by the test flood.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Scott Reservoir MA 00871 Merrimack River Basin Fitchburg Massachusetts Phase Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Scott Reservoir MA 00871 Merrimack River Basin Fitchburg Massachusetts Phase Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is comprised of a 705 foot long, 49 foot high, earth fill embankment, and a 31 foot wide stone spillway. The spillway has a capacity of 195 and 380 cfs with and without flashboards, which is 27 and 57 percent of the 1/2 PMF outflow, respectively. The remaining outflow overtops the spillway training walls and adjacent Ashby West Road. The top of the dam, elevation 889, is not overtopped. This dam is in generally fair condition. It is recommended that the owner engage a registered professional engineer to investigate downstream seepage conditions, to further evaluate the adequacy of the spillway, and to recommend a method of removing and properly backfilling trees stumps on the downstream face of the dam. Furthermore, the owner should institute certain remedial measures including permanent removal of spillway flashboards; repair of erosion at the upstream slopes near the gatehouse; repair of gatehouse masonry; backfilling of animal holes; maintenance of proper growth on the downstream slopes; removal of small trees, brush and debris within the spillway channel; monitoring of differential settlement within the floor of the spillway channel; and periodic testing of all intake and outlet gates to insure they are in working order.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Simonds Pond Dam MA 00874 Merrimack River Basin Leominster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Simonds Pond Dam MA 00874 Merrimack River Basin Leominster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simonds Pond is approximately 365 feet long and has a hydraulic height of 26 feet. The storage capacity is 86.5 acre-feet. The dam has a concrete cap and stone abutments. The emergency spillway is 48 feet long and occupies the center portion of the dam. As a result of the visual inspection and a review of available data, Simonds Pond Dam is considered to be in poor condition. Major concerns are: significant seepage at the toe of the dam; missing mortar and poor condition of the joints of the spillway; extensive spalling and cracking of the concrete cap on the top of the dam and spillway; deterioration of the spillway apron; extensive spalling of the concrete gatehouse foundation; and inadequate spillway capacity. The test flood inflow was estimated to be 2,500 cfs and resulted in an outflow discharge estimated to be 2,460 cfs, which would overtop the dam by approximately 1.3 feet. The maximum spillway capacity with the water level at the dam crest was estimated to be 700 cfs, which is approximately 28 percent of the test flood discharge.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Notown Reservoir Dam and Dike Dam 00870 Dike 01240 Merrimack River Basin Leominster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Notown Reservoir Dam and Dike Dam 00870 Dike 01240 Merrimack River Basin Leominster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main dam is 600 feet long with a hydraulic height of 21 feet. It contains a sheet piling and concrete upstream cutoff. The dike is 750 feet long with a hydraulic height of 13 feet height. The spillway's capacity with a 8-inch flashboards in place, is about 1,850 cfs or 37 percent of test flood outflow, at the top of dam. With the flashboards in place, the test flood outflow, 5,070 cfs, surcharges the reservior to elevation 741.5. The dam and dike and a small section of Route 2 are overtopped by 0.9 feet. Based on the visual inspection, the dam was in generally fair condition. However, due to the dense vegetation on the downstream slope, apparent seepage in this area could not be adequately inspected. This combined with apparent settlement along the upstream slope and the probable presence of root systems within the embankment give overall rating of the dam as poor. The dike was found to be in generally good condition.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Whitehall Reservoir Dam MA 00445 Merrimack River Basin Hopkinton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Whitehall Reservoir Dam MA 00445 Merrimack River Basin Hopkinton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The White hall Reservoir Dam is an almost 60-year old fill structure which has had added, in more recent times, a concrete upstream face. There are extensions at either end of the concrete face. A narrow road crosses the dam. The dam has no overflow spillway and the outlet conduits, which once discharged water into the watercourse below the dam, are permanently closed. Water level in the reservoir is apparently maintained by means of a conduit which diverts water, up to its capacity, by gravity into a nearby pond. Discussions with past and present owners could not verify that this line is actually operating. The fact that the pond level is maintained suggests that it does operate. Apparently, high flows are allowed to discharge over the dam and its extensions. The dam and abutments appear to be in fair condition. However, the downstream slopes should be better maintained. Reservoir storage will reduce the probable maximum discharge of 3,495 cfs to a test flood of 2,625 cfs. As there is no overflow spillway, per se, such a flood would overtop the dam and its natural extensions to a height of about 3 feet.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Pleasant Street Dam MA 00838 Merrimack River Basin Dracut Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Pleasant Street Dam MA 00838 Merrimack River Basin Dracut Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pleasant Street Dam consists of an approximately 93 ft. long stone masonry spillway with a brick building at each abutment. The spillway itself is approximately 15 ft. high and probably founded on bedrock. There is a 4 ft. square low-level gated outlet through the spillway structure and stoplogged conduit outlets through the building at the right abutment. The overall condition of Pleasant Street Dam can only be considered fair, primarily because the spillway of the dam was obscured by heavily flowing water and the operation of the low-level outlet was not demonstrated. However, visible portions of the dam are generally in good condition, and the dam is performing adequately. There was no evidence of settlement, lateral movement or other signs of structural failure, or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial action. With the water level 3.8 ft. above the spillway crest, corresponding to the estimated top of dam level, the spillway capacity is approximately 2,500 cfs, which is 12 percent of the test flood outflow.
