Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Housatonic River Basin Great Barrington Massachusetts Long Pond Dam MA 00024 Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Housatonic River Basin Great Barrington Massachusetts Long Pond Dam MA 00024 Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Pond Dam is located on Long Pond Brook about two (2.0) miles above Green River, a tributary of the Housatonic River in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The dam is an earth embankment about 240 feet long with a vertical concrete core wall and a height of 15.4 feet, and maximum storage capacity at top of dam of about 700 acre feet. A concrete spillway with a crest length of 9.6 feet and a road bridge overhead is located in the right abutment; an 8-inch cast iron pipe drain near the center of the dam; one 10-inch cast iron water supply intake left of the dam center, and a second 14-inch cast iron water supply intake passes the left abutment. Water treatment facilities are located downstream of the left end of the dam. The pipe outlets are controlled by gate valves. The dam is in FAIR condition. The embankment is stable with no visible leakage. The dam top is not a uniform elevation and a few protective stones on the upstream face have fallen into the reservoir. Trees and shrubs are growing in the downstream slope of the dam. The spillway is in fair condition, but a stop log has been used to raise reservoir level for water works purposes and the approach channel retaining wall is tilting into the channel. The spillway and dam are adequate for 100 year frequency (1% probability) storm runoff though there would be little freeboard protection against wave action. A storm runoff of half probable maximum flood would raise the reservoir to about 0.9 feet above the top of the dam, assuming that the dam remained.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Pecks Pond Dam MA 00843 Housatonic River Basin Pittsfield Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Pecks Pond Dam MA 00843 Housatonic River Basin Pittsfield Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pecks Pond Dam is a stone masonry and earth embankment dam approximately 490 feet long with a maximum hydraulic height of 31 feet and a top of dam storage of 155 acre-feet. The dam has a variable top width of between 8 feet and 20 feet and side slopes of approximately 2H to 1V. Discharge is over a grouted stone masonry spillway which has a length of about 40 feet. There is now a partial breach in the spillway. The bottom of the breach opening is 11 feet below the original spillway crest and 13 feet below the top of the dam. The dam presently impounds about 15 acre-feet. The storage capacity at the elevation of the test flood is 150 acre-feet. Based on engineering judgment and past performance of the dam and outlet works, the project is considered to be in poor condition. The breaching activities have left a portion of the embankment in an unstable condition and subject to erosion by discharge through the breach in the spillway. A 5-foot diameter penstock has been partially removed; however, discharge through the penstock is still possible and could cause erosion of a large portion of earth embankment. The spillway capacity at the top ot the dam is 108% of the test flood outflow. However, because of the structural condition of the spillway and adjacent walls, it is unlikely that the dam could safely pass high discharges.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaker Mill Pond Dam consists of a gunite covered concrete and masonry spillway structure between approach channel walls and abutting earth roadway embankments. The overall length of the dam is about 50 ft. and its maximum height is 20.4 ft. There are two regulating outlets at the dam site. The dam is in fair condition, based on a visual examination of the structure. Several deficiencies, mainly due to deterioration, were noted. However, there was no evidence of settlement, lateral movement or other signs of structural failure of the dam, or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial action. With the water level at the top of dam (level of Route 102 bridge deck), the ungated spillway capacity is approximately 1,600 cfs which is 6 percent of the test flood outflow.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Falls Pond Dam is an earthfill dam with a vertical stone masonry wall on the downstream face. The dam is a maximum 19 feet high and 185 feet long including main and auxiliary spillways at the south abutment. The main spillway is separated into three bays, each 15 feet long and controlled by a steel tainter gate. The auxiliary spillway is located adjacent to the main spillway and is ungated. Generally, the dam is i fair condition. Th following are deficiencies and visible signs of distress at the site: lack of a low-level outlet for draining the pond; deterioration of the downstream stone masonry wall; slight seepage through a crack on the auxiliary spillway, and at the toe of the main spillway; spalled concrete on both spillways; missing and dislodged riprap on the upstream face of the dam; trees growing on the embankment; and the accumulation of debris on the spillways and in the discharge channel. An outflow test flood of 7,010 cfs will overtop the dam by 3.1 feet. The spillways have the capacity to discharge 55 percent of the test flood before the dam is overtopped.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lee Pond Dam MA 00891 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Uxbridge Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Program

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lee Pond Dam MA 00891 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Uxbridge Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Program written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lee Pond Dam consists of an earthen embankment with a natural spillway and a vertical stone masonry wall along two short sections of the downstream face. The embankment has a minimum top width of 15 ft. and a maximum height of 25 ft. The overall length of the dam is 870 ft., including the natural spillway at the right end of the dam which is about 15 ft. wide at normal pool elevation. The outlet works consist of an inoperable sluice gate located about 250 ft. from the left end of the dam. The dam impounds Lee Pond, which is used for recreational purposes. Maximum storage capacity at the top of dam is 220 acre-feet. Based on visual inspection and a review of all available pertinent data, the dam is considered to be in poor condition. Features that could effect the structural integrity of the dam are seepage at the downstream toe of the dam, erosion and slumping of dam slopes, extensive tree growth on the dam slopes and animal burrows on the crest and downstream face. The calculated test flood inflow of about 660 cfs results in a routed outflow of about 650 cfs. The spillway passes 100% of the test flood outflow with a freeboard of about 3 ft.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Bolivar Pond Dam MA 00807 Neponset River Basin Canton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Bolivar Pond Dam MA 00807 Neponset River Basin Canton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bolivar Pond Dam is an earth embankment approximately 150 feet long. Both the upstream and downstream faces of the dam are vertical stone walls. Bolivar Street, which is approximately 40 feet wide, is located on the crest of the dam. The concrete overflow service spillway is located approximately 250 feet right of the dam. The drop-inlet closed conduit auxiliary spillway is located about 175 feet to the right of the service spillway. The dam appears to be in poor condition. Several indications of structural cracking are apparent on both the upstream wall and the downstream wall which is a wall of the Town of Canton DPW garage. About 5 gpm seepage was noted discharging from the downstream wall inside the Town of Canton garage. The dam does not have a reservoir drain system. The test flood inflow for the facility is approximately 9,410 cfs. The routed test flood outflow of 9.405 cfs overtops the dam by 2.9 feet. The spillway system is able to pass 115 cfs or about 1 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the dam.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Crocker Pond Dam MA 00638 Merrimack River Basin Westminster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Crocker Pond Dam MA 00638 Merrimack River Basin Westminster Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crocker Pond Dam is a 520-foot long earthfill dam built in 1933 for storage. The facility has a maximum height of 38.5 feet and includes a spillway, flood gate, gate house and outlet structures. The spillway is a concrete ogee weir, 120-feet long (including the closed flood gate). There are five separate outlets for the dam, and 8-foot wide by 12-foot high flood gate, which when closed is part of the spillway; a 42-inch diameter main low level outlet; a 24-inch diameter auxiliary low level outlet; a 3-foot square drain; and a 3-foot square trash chute. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: spalled, cracked and deteriorated concrete on the east and west approach channel sidewalls, the spillway face, the sidewall between the spillway and the flood gate, the east and west sidewalls of the spillway, and the west face of the gate house; burrow holes and foot paths on the downstream face of the dam; missing stones along the downstream bench of the east section of the dam; logs and debris caught on the spillway weir and trees overhanging the west side of the downstream channel. The test flood would overtop the dam by 2.2 feet with no flashboards in place andf 3.8 feet with flashboards in place. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway without flashboards can discharge 10,500 cfs, or 57 percent of the test flood outflow before the dam is overtopped with flashboards, the spillway can discharge 6,300 cfs or 34 percent of the test flood outflow before the dam is overtopped. This assumes that the flood gate remains closed during the test flood.
