This book was released on 1981 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicopee Reservoir Dam is a 545-foot long, 47-foot high earth embankment dam constructed circa 1926. The spillway is a 44-foot long ogee crest which si located at the right abutment of the dam and has a crest elevation (El) 168.0. The outlet conduits are a 24-inch cast-iron former water supply line and a 30-inch cast-iron blowoff. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: high degree of erosion of the principal spillway chute structure and outlet training walls; erosion gullies on the right abutment above the dam crest; brush growth on the downstream slope of the embankment; and seepage from the left abutment downstream of the dam. Generally, the dam is in fiar condition. The adopted spillway Test Flood is equal to the Probable Maximum Flood which yields a peak test flood inflow of 7565 cfs. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway, without flashboards, with the water surface at the top of the dam can discharge 3,950 cfs which is less than the total routed test flood outflow of 6,450 cfs. Thus, the spillway can discharge 60% of the routed test flood outflow.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Bemis Pond Dam is a 335-foot long earth dam built in 1954 for recreation purposes. The dam has a maximum height of 18.4 feet and consists of an earth embankment, a flume which functions as the main spillway, and two auxiliary spillways. Lower Bemis Pond Dam is a 290-foot long earth dam that was built in 1862 as an ice pond and modified in 1957 for recreational purposes. The dam has a maximum height of 33 feet and consists of an earth embankment, a drop inlet spillway containing a low level outlet, and an emergency spillway. Deficiencies observed at Upper Bemis Pond Dam include tilting of the walls of the left spillway, erosion of the embankment slopes adjacent to the flume and spillways and erosion at the downstream end of the left spillway, cracked and spalled concrete of the flume and spillway walls, and an accumulation of debris in the flume and numerous animal burrows in the embankment. Deficiencies observed at Lower Bemis Pond Dam include numerous animal burrows in the slopes; erosion of the upstream slope in the vicinity of the outlet; severely spalled concrete on the walls and floor of the spillway; severe leakage from the sluice gate of the low level outlet; heavy growth of trees and brush near the downstream toe of the dam; wood and debris accumulated in the downstream channel and trees and brush overhanging the downstream channel.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Indian Orchard MA 00722 Connecticut River Basin Springfield Ludlow Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Indian Orchard MA 00722 Connecticut River Basin Springfield Ludlow Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is generally comprised of a 401-foot long, 10 to 28 foot high main spillway, a head gate building, an overflow canal spillway and a canal leading to two 8 foot diameter penstocks used in electrical power generation. There are two inoperable gates located in the main dam. The dam is normally operated with two feet of flashboards above the spillway crest. The visual inspection did not disclose any findings that indicate an immediate unsafe condition. The 1 /2 PMF test flood used will produce an inflow/outflow of 70,830 cfs. The dam is a run-of-the-river type and the spillway crest would be overtopped by about 14 feet. The spillway has a capacity of 29,500 cfs (42 percent of 1/2 PMF outlfow) at elevation 166.6, top of non-overflow section. The non-overflow section is overtopped by about six feet. This flow would not overtop the upstream training walls which are at elevation 174.0. The overall condition of the dam is considered fair due to the lack of adequate draw down capacity. Remedial measures consist of removing vegetation from the downstream face of the dam, further observation of seepage at the right abutment, repair the wooden crest cover, and develop a formal warning system to warn downstream areas in case of an emergency.

Book excerpt: The dam is a 700 foot, 35 foot high earthfill embankment and a 920 foot long, 15 foot high earth-fill dike a gatehouse with outlet controls and a 10 foot wide concrete arch emergency spillway. With the water lever assumed to spillway crest at time of test flood, spilway discharge of about 30 cfs woudl occur. The reservoir woudl be surcharged to elevation 433, four feet above the spillway crest and two feet below the dam crest. The dam will not be overtopped. The dam is generally in fair condition. Remedial measures consist of removal of all brush and trees from the downstream slope of the main dam and spillway channel and repair of spalled and deteriorated concrete on the emergency spillway.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lower Glen Greenfield Reservoir Dam MA 00048 Connecticut River Basin Leyden Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lower Glen Greenfield Reservoir Dam MA 00048 Connecticut River Basin Leyden Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower Glen (Greenfield) Reservoir Dam is a 46-foot high stone masonry dam, spanning the lower portion of a 300-foot deep V-shaped valley. The dam has a crest approximately 95 feet long, a vertical downstream face, a service spillway and an auxiliary spillway. The upstream face of the dam is submerged, and since no construction data are available, the configuration of the upstream side of the dam is unknown. The dam was constructed around 1904 to provide a water supply reservoir for the Town of Greenfield. The reservoir has not been used for water supply purposes for more than 30 years; therefore, the dam now serves no useful purpose. The dam appears to be in poor overall condition. Several joints have opened due to structural movement of the dam as evidenced by a bulge on the downstream face of the dam located just to the east of the center dam pier at mid-height. A great deal of seepage was observed at the location of the bulge and toward the east side groin area. The test flood peak inflow to Lower Glen (Greenfield) Reservoir was computed to be 3,760 cfs. The test flood peak overflow is also 3,760 cfs, with a discharge 4.8 feet over the top of the dam. The service and auxiliary spillways have a combined discharge capacity of 740 cfs, or 20 percent of the routed test flood outflow, just prior to overtopping of the dam.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Wrights Reservoir Dam MA 00117 Connecticut River Basin Gardner Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Wrights Reservoir Dam MA 00117 Connecticut River Basin Gardner Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wright's Reservoir Dam is approximately 1,000 ft long. It consists of a small earth embankment approximately 14 ft high and an ungated concrete ogee spillway and stilling basin. An 800 ft long dike is present at this facility on the west side of the reservoir. Its maximum height is 12 ft. This facility was constructed in 1964 under the direction of the Corps of Engineers. The dam is generally in good to excellent condition. There are no obvious signs of failure or conditions which would warrant urgent maintenance treatment. Hydraulic analysis indicated that the spillway will pass the spillway test flood without overtopping the dam. The spillway test flood selected for this structure was the probable maximum flood. Recommendations for maintenance work include the clearing of brush and mowing of grass, especially at the west dike and the replacement of the operating handle for the reservoir drain at the outlet works. This work should be performed as part of the regular maintenance of the dam.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Congamond Lakes North Dike MA 00072 Connecticut River Basin Southwick Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Congamond Lakes North Dike MA 00072 Connecticut River Basin Southwick Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congamond Lakes North Dike impounds North Pond which is one of the three ponds which make up the Congamond Lakes. All of the three ponds, North Pond, South Pond and Middle Pond are interconnected by culverts or bridges. Together the three ponds are approximately three miles long and up to one-third mile wide with a total surface area of about 465 acres. The North Dike was constructed to replace an earlier dike (which plugged an old canal) and which failed in 1955. The North Dike is approximately 80 feet long with a maximum height of 29 feet. The present condition of the dike is fair. There is no spillway nor regulating gates at North Dike. The present outlet for the lakes is at Middle Pond where Berkshire Avenue crosses Great Brook about 2 miles to the south of North Dike. During annual floods, the direction of flow in Great Brook reverses itself and flows back towards Congamond Lakes. The outlet structure at Berkshire Avenue has stoplogs which are inserted to prevent Great Brook from flooding back into the lakes. While the stoplogs are in place, Congamond Lakes has no outlet. After the flood stage of Great Brook recedes, the stoplogs are removed and Congamond Lakes are allowed to drain. The PMF inflow into Congamond Lakes, assuming that the stoplogs are in place at Berkshire Avenue would cause the lake level to rise to approximate elevation 232 MSL which is about 2 feet below the top of the dike.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Whiting Street Pond Dam MA 00070 Connecticut River Basin Holyoke Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Whiting Street Pond Dam MA 00070 Connecticut River Basin Holyoke Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whiting Street Pond Dam is an earth-buttresed stone masonry dam, 1900 feet long with a maximum height of about 19 feet. A two level stone masonry and concrete spillway is located about 70 feet from the dam's south abutment. A gatehouse and gate chamber are located at approximately the center of the dam and contain the operating mechanisms for controlling the outflows into the City's Water Supply and to the low level outlet. Discharges from the low level outlet and the spillway converge and flow into an unnamed creek before emptying into the Connecticut River. Phase I inspection and evaluation of Whiting Street Pond Dam does not indicate conditions which would constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. Based on engineering judgement and the performance of the dam and the outlet works, the project is considered to be in fair condition. The project, however, does have a number of deficiencies which, if not remedied, have the potential for developing into hazardous conditions. The test flood, in accordance with Corps of Engineers guidelines, is the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The PMF yields an outflow of 8253 cfs which is greater than the maximum discharge capacity of the spillway of 215 cfs and would result in overtopping of the dam by about 1.4 feet.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Silver Lake Dam MA 00066 Connecticut River Basin Springfield Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Silver Lake Dam MA 00066 Connecticut River Basin Springfield Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . Book excerpt: Silver Lake Dam is an earthfill embankment about 85 feet long, 12 feet high with a crest width averaging about 30 feet. The project appears to be in fair condition. Since the dam is classified as small in size, with a significant hazard potential, the test flood is one half the PMF. (Author).

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Northampton Reservoir Upper Dam MA 00521 Connecticut River Basin Whately Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Northampton Reservoir Upper Dam MA 00521 Connecticut River Basin Whately Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dam is a 940 foot long earth embankment dam with a concrete spillway. It is recommended that the areas of erosion both on the upstream and downstream faces where the abutments and embankment interface be repaired. Surface water in these areas should be redirected to prevent future erosion. The riprap on the upstream face should be extended to the dam's crest. The water exiting from the toe and core wall drains should be directed to a control channel and weir where the flow can be periodically measured. The 20-in capped pipe running beneath the dam to the downstream toe should be uncapped and extended to the lower reservoir. This will prevent the potential of a pressurized pipe (should the outlet gate be left open) from bursting and undermining the dam. Although the spillway can not discharge the test flood without overtopping the dam, the spillway capacity is comparatively large. Because of the hydrologic and safety relationships between this dam and the lower reservoir, it is necessary that future hydrologic studies concerning spillway capacities at either project should simultaneously encompass studies for both projects.

The total height of the structure is 23 ft. from the top of the dike to the streambed at the toe of the spillway. There are deficiencies which must be corrected to assure the continual performance of this dam. The dam has been classified as intermediate in size with a hazard potential of high.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Ware Industries Main Upper Dam MA 00594 Connecticut River Basin Ware Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Ware Industries Main Upper Dam MA 00594 Connecticut River Basin Ware Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ware Industries Man (Upper) Dam consists of a main spillway 115 ft. long and approximately 34 ft. high, a spillway extension 50 ft. long and 4 ft. high, a concrete emergency spillway, a gate house with control works to a canal, and a 115 ft. long overflow weir from the canal. Based on a visual examination of the structure, the project is in good to fair condition. There was no evidence of structural failure or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial action. The PMF outflow of 109,200 cfs would overtop the dam by 11.25 ft. With the water level at the top of dam, the spillway system can pass 7980 cfs which is 7.3 percent of the test flood.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Paradise Pond Dam MA 00754 Connecticut River Basin Northampton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Paradise Pond Dam MA 00754 Connecticut River Basin Northampton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stone masonry gravity dam has a hydraulic height of 23 ft., and a length of 190 ft. The dam is presently in fair condition; however, there are deficiencies which if not corrected could jeopardize the safety and integrity of the structure. The major concern is undermining of the base of the dam which has left a section of the downstream face unsupported. It is small in size with a hazard potential of high. A registered professional should be hired to design repairs to pressure leaks which appear in the face of the dam. (Author).
