Book National Policy and Naval Strength and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book National Policy and Naval Strength and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Herbert William Richmond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Policy and Naval Strength, and Other Essays Offa, King Of Mercia, in the eighth century, after a glorious reign of nine years, bequeathed to England the useful lesson that he who will be secure on land must be supreme at sea.' 1 This 'lesson can be traced back through the pages of history for more than 2000 years, where it takes the form of an immutable law never so strikingly affirmed as in the rise of the British Empire. It has at some periods been effectively applied to the salvation of our people; but there have been other times when it seemed to be forgotten, or when naval force was misused with inexorable national loss, happily in our case, never yet irretrievable. If this is the unbroken teaching of history, and if in this country the truth is generally admitted, at least as a pious opinion, why have disastrous aberrations left their mark on the national life, and why have blighting heresies subverted national war policy? These and many other important questions are closely analysed in vice-admiral Sir Herbert Richmond's admirable studies in which he seeks to build up a philosophy of British Warfare based upon history the only sure guide for the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Policy: With Some Account of the Warships of the Principal Powers Towards the end of January, 1896, there was issued - a year late - a Parliamentary Return of the naval strength of Great Britain and the other principal maritime Powers. Compiled, as we must presume, from the most authoritative sources by the most competent experts, it was intended for the informa tion of the men who have to vote our money for the one effective arm of defence we possess against foreign aggression. It is natural, and surely most essential to our health as a nation, that both Members of Parliament and their constituents should wish to be accurately and Clearly informed upon the exact strength of our Navy, and its relation to the strength of others. The Return in question was presumably issued to satisfy this most commendable curiosity. It is not necessary to reproduce it here, for one very good reason: that it can convey no information to anybody. Book Naval Administration and Warfare

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Administration and Warfare: Some General Principles; With Other Essays As the common proverb has it, the wood often can not be seen for the trees. Few persons, probably, have escaped the de spairing sense of inability to find on a map some particular place, because of the thicket of names spread over the surface, like the tanglewood of a forest. Fewer still have been happy enough to look at a map intelligently constructed for the special purpose of showing no more than is needed for the understanding of the subject Which the map is intended to illustrate; but those Who have had this experience Will recognize that the advan tage is not only that of finding readily a feature, the position of Which is approximately known, but also the ease With Which can be appreciated the relations of the several parts to one another, and to the Whole. The composite effect, When thus obtained for the first time, is illuminative almost to the point of revelation. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Naval Policy as Outlined in Messages of the Presidents of the United States From 1790 Our reliance for protection and defense on the land must be mainly on our Citizen soldiers, who will be ever ready, as they ever have been ready in time past, to rush with alacrity, at the call of their country to her defense. This description of force, however, can not defend our coast, harbors, and inland seas, nor protect our com merce on the ocean or the lakes. These must be protected by our Navy. Considering an increased naval force, and especially steam ves sels, corresponding with our growth and importance as a nation, and proportioned to the increased and increasing naval power of other nations, of vast importance as regards our safety, and the great and growing interests to be protected by it, I recommend the subject to the favorable consideration of Congress. Book Essays on Naval Defence Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays on Naval Defence Classic Reprint written by P. H. Colomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Naval Defence The value of the kind of studies embraced in these essays in enabling us to make correct forecasts was set forth in the Preface to the First Edition, so far as sail power, very heavy guns, classification of ships, and the leading principles of Imperial defence were concerned. There was a lament over our failure to study the question of naval tactics seriously, and by the use of the inductive method; and a fear was expressed lest such neglect might some day land us in trouble. No war had then occurred to test any of the tac tical forecasts made in the last two chapters, and so nothing could be shown in the way of experiment to justify the method pursued in that domain of naval science. But since then the Battle of Yalu has been fought. Clearing the nature of the battle from side issues, we may say that it was a trial of strength between two tactical formations - the line abreast, which, in the military phrase adopted by Captain bainbridge-hofl' of the United States Navy, would be line and the line-ahead, which, in the language of the same authority, would be column. Chapter 2 is on the necessity for a strong battle fleet to gain and hold command of the sea, and chapter 3 looks at the question from a naval, technical, and economical standpoint. Chapter 4 sets forth the building project, and is so original that it will interest all who study naval policy. The translation is as follows.
