Download or read book The Queer Museum written by Erica Robenalt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queer Museum examines how relationships between institutions and LGBTQ+ communities function and how they help to define queer museum practice. Analysing what it means to queer the museum in Western contexts, the book builds upon and challenges texts about inclusionary, activist museum practice and discusses the ways in which Othered communities are engaged with and represented. Arguing that an institution’s understanding of queerness is directly related to the kind, and extent, of change pursued by the museum, the author clarifies that governance structures, staff hierarchies, funding and relationships to queer communities affect the way queering might be pursued. The analysis looks critically at exhibitions and institutions and particularly forefronts the experiences of museum practitioners. It argues that practical changes that positively affect museums’ long-term relationships with marginalised communities are critical. The book also considers the future of the museum by drawing on queer theories of utopia, futurity, failure and amateurism to complicate understandings of the queer museum and its relationship to people and objects. The Queer Museum will be of interest to students and academics in museum and heritage studies, art history and archival studies. It will also be essential reading for museum and arts sector practitioners who seek to do and engage with this kind of work.

Book Wonder in Contemporary Artistic Practice

Download or read book Wonder in Contemporary Artistic Practice written by Christian Mieves and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wonder has an established link to the history and philosophy of science. However, there is little acknowledgement of the relationship between the visual arts and wonder. This book presents a new perspective on this overlooked connection, allowing a unique insight into the role of wonder in contemporary visual practice. Artists, curators and art theorists give accounts of their approach to wonder through the use of materials, objects and ways of exhibiting. These accounts not only raise issues of a particular relevance to the way in which we encounter our reality today but ask to what extent artists utilize the function of wonder purposely in their work.

Book National Museums

Download or read book National Museums written by Simon Knell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Museums is the first book to explore the national museum as a cultural institution in a range of contrasting national contexts. Composed of new studies of countries that rarely make a showing in the English-language studies of museums, this book reveals how these national museums have been used to create a sense of national self, place the nation in the arts, deal with the consequences of political change, remake difficult pasts, and confront those issues of nationalism, ethnicity and multiculturalism which have come to the fore in national politics in recent decades. National Museums combines research from both leading and new researchers in the fields of history, museum studies, cultural studies, sociology, history of art, media studies, science and technology studies, and anthropology. It is an interrogation of the origins, purpose, organisation, politics, narratives and philosophies of national museums.

Book National Museums and Nation building in Europe 1750 2010

Download or read book National Museums and Nation building in Europe 1750 2010 written by Peter Aronsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe’s national museums have since their creation been at the centre of on-going nation making processes. National museums negotiate conflicts and contradictions and entrain the community sufficiently to obtain the support of scientists and art connoisseurs, citizens and taxpayers, policy makers, domestic and foreign visitors alike. National Museums and Nation-building in Europe 1750-2010 assess the national museum as a manifestation of cultural and political desires, rather than that a straightforward representation of the historical facts of a nation. National Museums and Nation-building in Europe 1750-2010 examines the degree to which national museums have created models and representations of nations, their past, present and future, and proceeds to assess the consequences of such attempts. Revealing how different types of nations and states – former empires, monarchies, republics, pre-modern, modern or post-imperial entities – deploy and prioritise different types of museums (based on art, archaeology, culture and ethnography) in their making, this book constitutes the first comprehensive and comparative perspective on national museums in Europe and their intricate relationship to the making of nations and states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report recommends that the government invests up to GBP267.2 million over 5 years to revitalize England's regional museums. The proposal is to create a centre of excellence or 'hub' in each of the nine English regions. These 'hubs' would consist of a leading museum and up to 3 partner museums or 'satellites' which would work together to provide leadership and set new standards in the museum sector. The new money is intended to be additional to present local authority and other funding, and will be used to raise core staffing levels by 25%, create new access, outreach and education programmes, finance new exhibition initiatives, and develop new information technology resources. The report forecasts that visits to leading regional museums could double, reaching 100,000 visits per year.
