Book Marine Pollution Contingency Planning

Download or read book Marine Pollution Contingency Planning written by Anastasia Telesetsky and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an ever-present threat of catastrophic marine pollution incidents, as illustrated by recent disasters such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Even small-scale accidental pollution discharges can have long-term consequences for marine and coastal resources. The UN Convention on the Law of Sea obliges all States to cooperate to prevent accidents and to minimize environmental damage during emergencies by jointly developing and implementing marine pollution contingency plans. The Asia-Pacific is one of the world’s busiest shipping regions, some of its mega-ports experience high rates of vessel congestion, and there are increasing numbers of offshore installations. Marine pollution prevention planning is thus vital for the region. Marine Pollution Contingency Planning: State Practice in Asia-Pacific States outlines and examines marine pollution contingency planning in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, and the United States.

Book Chemical Spills and Emergency Management at Sea

Download or read book Chemical Spills and Emergency Management at Sea written by P. Bockholts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International shipping is of great importance for the transport of a great many types of cargo. Substances and products considered dangerous constitute almost 50% of all the payload. It is obvious that stringent regulations are required in order to minimize the risks of accidents. These regulations, which are derived from good practice and which are based on research, have been adopted by a great number of countries. However, emergencies do occur in spite of all precautions. Such emergencies require fast and adequate response in order to confine the consequences for man and his environment to a minimum. Emergency response has political, legal, financial and technical aspects. This makes decision making extremely difficult. The papers carefully prepared and assembled in this book present an up-to-date picture of today's achievements, knowledge and difficulties that are being faced. It was the intention of Oilchem Recovery Denmark and TNO to bring the wide scatter of aspects together in a joined perspective. We also intended to spread the information on latest developments among the many people who are involved in combating calamities and in particular in decision making. Finally, we hope that this conference may help all of us to come to a safer transport of chemicals and a better aquatic environment. We thank all the authors for their magnificent contribution.

Book excerpt: From the Foreword by The Rt Hon Sir Ninian Stephen AC, GCMG, GCVO, KBE'... a sure legal guide to one great area of concern to all who journey on the sea or care for its waters and its shores ... survey of what State and Territory and national and international law each has to offer by way of protection from pollution of the waters that surround us is as timely as it is comprehensive. The inclusion of the relevant domestic law of New Zealand and of Papua New Guinea reminds us that our neighbour nations with whom we share those waters also share with us the same concerns.'
