Book Confronting Corruption

Download or read book Confronting Corruption written by Jeremy Pope and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first version of this Source Book argued the case for a "National Integrity System", an holistic approach to transparency and accountability and embracing a range of accountability "pillars", democratic, judicial, media and civil society. The expression has since passed into common usage in development circles, and the argument for an holistic approach to anti-corruption efforts has similarly achieved a widespread consensus. The fight against corruption is not wholly a moral one, in the sense that it is a struggle against the intrinsic "evil" of corruption. Certainly there is a moral element - and one which cuts across al major religions and societies throughout the world. But the compelling reason for the struggle is the suffering and deprivation corruption brings to whole societies, and to the world's most poor. It is concern for the latter, rather than a distaste for the corrupt and their deeds, that rightly drives the global movement against corruption.

Book TI National Integrity Systems Country Studies

Download or read book TI National Integrity Systems Country Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transparency International has developed National Integrity System country studies to provide a detailed and nuanced assessment of anti-corruption systems at country level. The studies are based on TI's National Integrity System concept, which encompasses the interrelated elements necessary to promote accountability and integrity in a society. Since their introduction in 2000, the NIS country studies have provided a rich resource that profiles strengths and weaknesses in an anti-corruption system. Country studies complement TI's global measurement tools (CPI, BPI and Global Corruption Barometer), providing more in-depth assessment at country level. Moreover, these qualitative studies create the basis for diagnostic and policy reform and enable the formulation of targeted and effective national anti-corruption strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The National Integrity System (NIS) approach was developed by Jeremy Pope to understand the weaknesses of state institutions and the failings of previous reform initiatives by asking about corruption from a number of perspectives: the causes of corruption; the relationships of the Executive to other state institutions; key areas where corruption occurs or where democratisation is constrained; those institutions or areas with a role to play in promoting reform and democratisation, and for dealing with corruption; progress with government strategy and donor anti-corruption initiatives; and the relative strengths and weaknesses of these institutions or areas on an individual and collective basis to ensure their own capacity to be free from corruption ('corruption-proofing') as well as to promote a more integrated approach to dealing with corruption."--Page 2.

Book Local Integrity Systems

Download or read book Local Integrity Systems written by L. W. Huberts and published by Boom Juridische. This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first international comparative study of local integrity systems, paying attention to the policies, practices, and actors at the local government level that aim to fight corruption and safeguard integrity. It provides critical up-to-date reports of the local integrity systems in seven world cities - Sydney/New South Wales, New York, Hong Kong, London, Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Antwerp. For each city, a description of the integrity system is given by the head of the key integrity agency, followed by an evaluation by an ethics researcher who is familiar with the city's integrity system. In the introductory chapter, an overview is provided of relevant ethics and integrity institutions and policies at the national and international level. The final chapter presents a cross-city comparison of the results, proposes a framework for analysis and assessment of local integrity systems, and provides an ambitious outline for future research and practice. With its unique combination of theory and practice, Local Integrity Systems will appeal to academics and practitioners in the area of ethics and integrity in local government.
