Book Transformation and Crisis in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Transformation and Crisis in Central and Eastern Europe written by Bruno Dallago and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial crisis has provided an important opportunity to revisit debates about post-socialist transition and the relative success of different reform paths. Post-communist Central and Eastern Europe (CEECs) in particular show resilience in the wake of the international crisis with a diverse range of economic transformations. Transformation and Crisis in Central and Eastern Europe offers an in depth analysis of a diverse range of countries, including Poland, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic and Slovakia. This volume assesses each country’s institutional transformations, geopolitical policies, and local adaptations that have led them down divergent post-communist paths. Chapters take the reader systematically through the evolution of former communist national economic systems, before ending with lessons and conclusions for the future. Subsequent chapters demonstrate that economic performance crucially depends on achieving a sustainable balance between sound institutional design and policies on one hand, and localization on the other. This new volume from a prestigious group of academics offers a fascinating and timely study which will be of interest to all scholars and policy makers with an interest in European Economics, Russian and East European Studies, Transition Economies, Political Economy and the post-2008 world more generally.

Book Poland From Partitions to EU Accession

Download or read book Poland From Partitions to EU Accession written by Piotr Koryś and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys Poland’s move from being a post-feudal, backward, peripheral country to being a modern, capitalist, European state: from the partition of the commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania to the abolishment of ‘second serfdom’; late industrialization to state socialism; post-partition fragmentation to post-Second World War westward dislocation; and from the ‘Solidarność’ movement to accession into the European Union. Could Poland really be considered an ‘underdeveloped’ nation throughout the last 200 years? What factors contributed to its ‘backwardness’? Has Poland yet managed to catch up with the West? This book, the first overview of the modern economic history of Poland to be published in English, addresses these and many other questions crucial for developing our understanding of the economic history of modern Central-Eastern Europe. The economic development of Poland is analyzed through data and statistics, as well as through analysis of the ideas that paved the way for the politics of economic and social modernization.

Book The East European Economies in the 1970s

Download or read book The East European Economies in the 1970s written by Alec Nove and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East European Economies in the 1970s reviews the development of economic policy in Eastern Europe in the 1970s. This book includes individual country studies that compare and contrast both the aims of economic development and the results of the growth process, as well as the instruments employed in economic policy. More specifically, this book examines what has happened during the past decade after the fundamental changes in economic policy that occurred in the 1960s. This text is comprised of 10 chapters; the first of which provides a background on economic reform in Eastern Europe during the 1970s. Attention then turns to the economic policy, methods, and performance of the USSR after 1970. The chapters that follow focus on the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Yugoslavia. This book concludes with a discussion on the economic system of Albania in the 1970s, focusing on the country's conservative radicalism, agriculture, and sharp disputes on economic policy between 1974 and 1976. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on how the ""process of reconstruction within the system"" has led to increasing differentiation of aims, institutions, and instruments of economic policy between individual countries. This book will be of interest to political science students, political scientists, political economists, and policy analysts.

Book excerpt: This paper reviews the official estimates of Romania's net material product (NMP) and gross domestic product (GDP) and the underlying methods. It also reviews the data on growth rates of NMP and GDP. The paper identified possible sources for biases in the estimates of levels of NMP or GDP in the agricultural, services and foreign trade sectors and also of the growth rates of overall NMP and GDP. It then considers a few alternative exchange rates to convert the national currency GDP into US dollars and shows resulting per capita GDP numbers in US dollars.

Book The Polish Road from Socialism The Economics Sociology and Politics of Transition

Download or read book The Polish Road from Socialism The Economics Sociology and Politics of Transition written by Walter D. Connor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the contributors to this volume offer is neither a romantic version of the course of Polish history nor a jubilant account of the recovery of national independence and political choice. Rather, they offer a variety of tough-minded analytic perspectives on what comes when "the party's over" - not just the PSPR but the celebration marking its downfall. They focus on Poland's movement toward an internationally competitive market economy, a political democracy in which plural interests compete, and the constitution of a civil society that both tolerates and ameliorates conflict. The multidisciplinary contributors include Jan Mujzel, Keith Crane, Benjamin Slay, Kazimierz Poznanski; Jan Bossak, Wojciech Bienkowski, Wlodzimierz Wesolowski, Edmund Wnuk-Lipinski, Adam Sarapata, Andrzej Sicinski, Piotr Lukasiewicz, Krzysztof Nowak, David S. Mason, Adrzej Rychard, Krzysztof Jasiewicz, Jack Bielasiak, Janusz Reykowski, Stanislaw Gebethner, Miroslawa Marody, Edmund Mokrzycki, and Michael D. Kennedy.

Book Economic and Political Contention in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Economic and Political Contention in Comparative Perspective written by Maria Kousis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European and American specialists in economic and political processes move beyond earlier debates to look seriously, systematically, and innovatively at social change and protest, with particular attention to the influence of economic change and variation on contentious politics. The essays take up two widely recognized but much contested questions in contentious politics: how threats and opportunities faced by potential participants in joint political action affect the likelihood, character, and consequences of that action; and, how economic change and variation either a) constitute significant political threats and opportunities or b) shape responses to political threats and opportunities. Contributors: Maria Kousis, Charles Tilly, Marc Giugni, Julie Berclaz, Marc Steinberg, Jeffery Broadbent, Klaus Eder, John K. Glenn, Dieter Rucht, Richard Hogan, Maryjane Osa, Cristina Corduneanu-Husi.

Book The Polish Economy

Download or read book The Polish Economy written by Ben Slay and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989, Poland became the first Eastern Bloc country to shake off the dominance of its ruling Communist party. Although other post-Communist countries have since followed suit, Poland's experience has been unique in its move to Westernize. In this timely and insightful account, Ben Slay provides the first integrated, comprehensive assessment of Poland's economic transformation from central planning to a market system, and the political and sociological factors that have contributed to it. Drawing on the work of Western and Polish scholars as well as his own research, Slay traces the evolution of the Polish transformation from its historical roots in People's Poland and predicts potential problems and successes facing the Polish economy. A ground-breaking addition to the emerging study of post- Communist political economies, The Polish Economy demonstrates that other countries now struggling to join the West have much to learn from Poland's example. Of interest to scholars across the social sciences, this work provides general as well as professional readers with a compelling account of the realities behind one of the most important events of our time--the collapse of the Eastern Bloc.
