Book The Quest for Constitutionalism

Download or read book The Quest for Constitutionalism written by Hugh Corder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a timely assessment on the progress made towards the achievement of a constitutional democracy in South Africa. The chapters collectively present an in-depth analysis of the development of the legal system and of the implications of the Constitution for the social configuration of power. To what extent has the vision of constitutionalism contained in the Constitution been realised? Primarily concerned with the impact of laws and the salience of their existence and enforcement for South Africans, the work highlights the importance of placing the constitutional regime in its historical, cultural, social, economic and political context. The book further recognises the importance of the South African constitutional provisions for transnational or globalised constitutionalism more broadly. It contains contributions from South African scholars, as well as European authors, bringing in new analytical angles and adding a specific comparative dimension. Through the prism of South Africa, the authors discuss the innovative character of constitutional and legal provisions in terms of both constitution-making and law-making processes and their contents. This book provides analysis that will be relevant to scholars, students and practitioners, specifically those interested in International Relations, Law, Sociology of Law, and African Studies, as well as socio-political comparative studies.

Book HIV AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On

Download or read book HIV AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On written by Poul Rohleder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has happened since the first appearance of AIDS in 1981: it has been identified, studied, and occasionally denied. The virus has shifted host populations and spread globally. Medicine, the social sciences, and world governments have joined forces to combat and prevent the disease. And South Africa has emerged as ground zero for the pandemic. The editors of HIV/AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On present the South African crisis as a template for addressing the myriad issues surrounding the epidemic worldwide, as the book brings together a widely scattered body of literature, analyzes psychosocial and sexual aspects contributing to HIV transmission and prevention, and delves into complex intersections of race, gender, class, and politics. Including largely overlooked populations and issues (e.g., prisoners, persons with disabilities, stigma), as well as challenges shaping future research and policy, the contributors approach their topics with rare depth, meticulous research, carefully drawn conclusions, and profound compassion. Among the topics covered: The relationship between HIV and poverty, starting from the question, "Which is the determinant and which is the consequence?" Epidemiology of HIV among women and men: concepts of femininity and masculinity, and gender inequities as they affect HIV risk; gender-specific prevention and intervention strategies. The impact of AIDS on infants and young children: risk and protective factors; care of children by HIV-positive mothers; HIV-infected children. Current prevention and treatment projects, including local-level responses, community-based work, and VCT (voluntary counseling and testing) programs. New directions: promoting circumcision, vaccine trials, "positive prevention." South Africa’s history of AIDS denialism. The urgent lessons in this book apply both globally and locally, making HIV/AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On uniquely instructive and useful for professionals working in HIV/AIDS and global public health.

Download or read book HIV and AIDS written by Simon Uchenna Ortuanya and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed and timely analysis of key regulatory and legal issues arising in the context of HIV and AIDS. The ten chapters cover the core issues central to an understanding of law and public health as concerns AIDS. Whilst the book focuses on how Nigerian law applies to HIV and AIDS, the author draws heavily on materials from other jurisdictions. There are many parallels that exist between the application of law and governance considerations in the AIDS pandemic that resonate with other infectious diseases including Covid-19, therefore the book is widely relevant to public health law in communicable disease contexts. Topics covered: overview and origin of the HIV and AIDS epidemic; legal and institutional framework of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Nigeria; human rights and the epidemic; decriminalisation of HIV and AIDS in Nigeria; HIV and AIDS and vulnerable groups; HIV and AIDS and patents; HIV and AIDS and sports; international organisations and programmes on HIV; judicial responses to HIV and AIDS; and global pandemics and control.

Book Guide for Monitoring and Evaluating National HIV Testing and Counselling HTC Programmes

Download or read book Guide for Monitoring and Evaluating National HIV Testing and Counselling HTC Programmes written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding HTC services is a key activity for national programmes in order to achieving universal access to prevention, treatment and care. As services are scaled up and more resources are invested in HTC, national programmes must be able to establish standards, and ensure the quality of and coverage with HTC services among populations with the greatest need. An effective HTC programme will result in a larger number of people with HIV receiving an early diagnosis of, and care and treatment for, HIV. Focusing HTC services on those who are most vulnerable to acquiring HIV also presents an important opportunity for prevention counselling and referral to prevention services. As in any programme, achieving these objectives requires a minimum, reliable set of data to guide the efficiency and effectiveness of service implementation. The purpose of this guide is to describe a set of indicators that can be used by national AIDS programmes to monitor and evaluate their HTC services. The guide aims to be as comprehensive as possible including HTC indicators that are relevant to other areas of work where HTC is a key intervention, such as services for prevention of mother to child transmission and TB. Several of the indicators are new and require field testing, this is why the guide has been presented as a field test version and it will be revised following field testing of new indicators.
