Book A National Health Service

Download or read book A National Health Service written by John Mohan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1995-03-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contrasts the proposals of the Royal Commission of the late 1970s with the very different set of priorities enshrined in the 1989 White Paper and describes how the changes between the two documents came about. It argues that the NHS reforms should be seen not as the inevitable product of technical developments nor as a consensus response to narrowly managerial difficulties within the NHS, but rather as part of a wider political strategy towards state provision of welfare. The book strongly emphasises the uneven geographical impacts of post-1979 changes, a topic usually underplayed by analysts of social policy, and draws heavily on previously unpublished material.

Book Advertising and Cultural Politics in Global Times

Download or read book Advertising and Cultural Politics in Global Times written by Pamela Odih and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advertising and Cultural Politics in Global Times traces daringly transgressive convergences between cultural politics and global advertising media. It engages with a range of interpolations between cultural politics and advertising technologies including: the governmental rationality of neoliberal vistas, transgressive aesthetics and the cultural politics of representation, the political sign-economy of citizen branding, techno-political convergences between the social and political, and the marking of a new exciting geo-political terrain for cultural politics in global times. Tracing global advertising practices to the cultural politics commonly manifested in the postmodern political caesura of advertising, this book makes use of extensive case studies, whilst drawing on the work of Baudrillard, Giroux, Foucault, Castells and Latour to illustrate the manner in which advertising continues to revolutionize the political sphere. As such, it will be of interest to a range of readers across media studies, cultural studies and sociology.

Book Community Care Practice and the Law

Download or read book Community Care Practice and the Law written by Michael Mandelstam and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Community Care Practice and the Lawhas been substantially rewritten and restructured to reflect the rapid change affecting community care in legislation, the law courts, policy and practice. The book bridges the gap between law and practice by juxtaposing fully and systematically legislation, legal judgments in the courts, local ombudsman and health service ombudsman findings, Parliamentary debates and answers, and numerous reports about practice from the Department of Health, voluntary organisations, professional associations and academics. Distinctive features of the book include: two large digests of cases containing well over three hundred legal judgments and local ombudsman investigations; a chapter consisting of a practical checklist of questions - for managers, practitioners and users of services and their advisors - to check the lawfulness of policies, eligibility criteria and individual decisions; two overview, stand-alone chapters, one summarising the system, the other highlighting underlying themes and mechanisms; an inclusive approach embracing not only a range of both residential and non-residential care services, but also equipment and home adaptations, carers, direct payments, NHS services generally and continuing care, moving and handling law, legislation and guidance (old and new) underlying joint working and joint finance; avoidance of jargon.

Book Industrial Relations in the NHS

Download or read book Industrial Relations in the NHS written by Roger V. Seifert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book yet written on industrial relations in the NHS and it has been completed at a time of radical and rapid change. Some of the material, particularly in the final chapter, reflects first thoughts about the impact of the new system on industrial relations. The book arose from my teaching experiences with health service practitioners from several of the NHS trade unions and professional associations. Many of these activists, as well as managers, expressed frustration that there was no single source about some of the issues which concerned them. This book is the result of their anxieties. Throughout, I have assumed that the main thrust of government policy towards the NHS, at least since the early 1980s, has been to sell off important sections of the service to the private sector. There is, I believe, strong evidence for this proposition. My argument, however, is based not only on the evidence of government's will to 'privatize', but also on the behaviour of ministers, senior civil servants and senior NHS managers which adds up to a set of policies and practices which together allow the point that government runs the NHS as if it was going to sell it.
