Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Guilds and the State There are several reasons for this curious anomaly. The new movement has not yet developed a popular writer. No young Cobbett has come our way; no young dramatist has been seised of the idea no young poet has captured rich raptures at our altar. They will arrive in good time we have just begun. I think, however, we must look deeper for the true explanation. Book The Meaning of National Guilds Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Meaning of National Guilds Classic Reprint written by Maurice B. Reckitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning of National Guilds But it is in regard to Labour that the War has Shown most clearly the rottenness of Capitalism. We have only to compare the wonderful record of the workers in the trenches with the chaos and confusion in the workshops at home to see that something is hopelessly wrong in industry - not with the men, but with the methods. Labour, after being consistently treated as nothing more than a commodity, a raw material, or one of the factors of production, was suddenly assured that it was the backbone of the nation, that our common fate depended upon its efforts, and that only in the workshops could victory be won. True as it was, this admission was made only partially and always grudgingly. Indeed, save for high-flown appeals to the workers to be worthy of the trust that had never been reposed in them, nothing was done to give effect to so Vital a discovery. As a consequence, Labour, after a short period of flounder ing in the realm of national idealism, was again dragged down by the brute necessity of the capit alist workshop and the brutish hypotheses of the capitalist ideology to its old level of mere opportunism. Book National Guilds

Download or read book National Guilds written by S. G. Hobson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Guilds: An Inquiry Into the Wage System, and the Way Out The substance of the following chapters appeared serially in The New Age during the years 1912-13. But for the origin of the idea on the Guilds as applied to modern industry an earlier date would have to be sought. Both the present Editor of The New Age in an article in the Contemporary Review of 1906, and Mr. A. J. Penty in his work on The Restoration of the Guild System of the same year, had put forward the suggestion that the Guild organisation was indispensable to higher industry at any rate. But whereas Mr. Penty confined his proposals to the mere restoration of the mediæval guild, without regard to modern conditions, it was in The New Age, during the period 1906-12, that the idea of the national guild was first brought into relation both with historical and with recent economic development. And the present work, the first ever published on the subject, is the outcome of that period. The tide of Collectivism, however, was then and for some years afterwards too powerful to admit of even the smallest counter-current. Some experience of Collectivism in action and of political methods as distinct from economic methods was necessary before the mind of the Labour movement could be turned in another direction. This was brought about by the impulse known as Syndicalism which, in essence, is the demand of Labour to control its industry. Book Guilds and Co Operatives in Italy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guilds and Co Operatives in Italy Classic Reprint written by Odon Por and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guilds and Co-Operatives in Italy Por speaks about an alliance with the State but I am sure he knows what power has already been generated in the Guild organizations, and is con fident they can hold their own against the Caesarism which so easily springs up in administrators and Government officials. Besides I realize that some time the warming of the coldest of all cold monsters must be attempted; and it can only be done when the humanity of the people is power fully entrenched in organizations which they have themselves created and which' are true expressions of their character. The Italian guildsmen have done so much that they may accomplish the miracle of making the State the kindly big brother of the individual; and no doubt it will become more efficient by the creation of Vocational Councils through which the thought of the wisest in every branch of national life may converge purely on the State, not muddled by an admixture with non expert opinion, as it is in democratic assemblies where everybody's finger may legally be inserted in everybody else's pie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guild Socialism: A Plan for Economic Democracy This book does not claim to be an authoritative statement of Guild Socialism in the sense that it would be accepted by all, or by a majority of, Guild Socialists. There is, I am glad to say, no such thing as a strict Guild orthodoxy; and for the most part it can only claim to be an expression of personal opinion. I think, however, that where the matters discussed in it have been the subject-matter of actual Conference decisions of the National Guilds League, the views here taken will be found to be substantially in agreement with those ex pressed by the League. This can be seen by a reference to the reports published by the League, in which the most important of its Conference decisions are contained.
