Book National Guilds

Download or read book National Guilds written by S. G. Hobson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Guilds: An Inquiry Into the Wage System, and the Way Out The substance of the following chapters appeared serially in The New Age during the years 1912-13. But for the origin of the idea on the Guilds as applied to modern industry an earlier date would have to be sought. Both the present Editor of The New Age in an article in the Contemporary Review of 1906, and Mr. A. J. Penty in his work on The Restoration of the Guild System of the same year, had put forward the suggestion that the Guild organisation was indispensable to higher industry at any rate. But whereas Mr. Penty confined his proposals to the mere restoration of the mediaeval guild, without regard to modern conditions, it was in The New Age, during the period 1906-12, that the idea of the national guild was first brought into relation both with historical and with recent economic development. And the present work, the first ever published on the subject, is the outcome of that period. The tide of Collectivism, however, was then and for some years afterwards too powerful to admit of even the smallest counter-current. Some experience of Collectivism in action and of political methods as distinct from economic methods was necessary before the mind of the Labour movement could be turned in another direction. This was brought about by the impulse known as Syndicalism which, in essence, is the demand of Labour to control its industry. Book G D H Cole

Download or read book G D H Cole written by L. P. Carpenter and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1973 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sensitive analysis of the thought and intellectual development of G. D. H. Cole (1889-1959) the distinguished Labour historian. Cole's career is traced from his earliest days in the Labour movement to his final years as Chichele Professor of Social and Political Thought at Oxford. Professor Carpenter examines Cole's role in the creation of Guild Socialism; his work in the early 1920s when after the decline of Guild Socialism, he turned towards the analysis of policies, research through the New Statesman and the New Fabian Research Bureau and teaching at Oxford; his attempts to provide a policy for the Left in the 1930s, the idea of economic planning and the Popular Front; his activities during the Second World War; and his place in the debates over the Labour movement's cause after the 1945 government. Finally Professor Carpenter discusses Cole's courageous recognition, towards the end of his life, that Socialism had not come and his attempts to start a new cycle of research in one of the first efforts to create a New Left.

Book Reaction and the Avant Garde

Download or read book Reaction and the Avant Garde written by Tom Villis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-10-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reaction and the Avant-Garde" illuminates a vital facet of right-wing thought in the first decades of the century, which had a powerful hold on Europe's intellectual elite. Prominent literary figures, such as Ezra Pound, Hilaire Belloc and the Chestertons, led a revolt against liberal parliamentary democracy in Britain. This group despised parliaments as representing and embodying a 'nation'. Villis examines the literary works, private papers, correspondence and memoirs of the leaders of this anti-Semitic, anti-modern, anti-women's rights movement that formed the intellectual underpinning of European fascism.
