Book The Master of the T ebo Altarpiece

Download or read book The Master of the T ebo Altarpiece written by Jan Royt and published by Karolinum Press, Charles University. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Master of the T ebo Altarpiece was one of the most important Gothic artists of the international style art in the European context. Scholarly literature, both Czech and foreign, presents various ideas concerning ascribing particular pieces of art to this unknown figure, the date of their origin and their chronology, artistic ideological points of departure of his work and the reconstruction and origin of the "T ebo altarpiece." Art historian Jan Royt s extensive scientific monograph on the Master of the T ebo Altarpiece is an attempt to answer these questions. The introductory chapters outline the historical events and development of painting in Europe and in Bohemia in the last third of the 14th century, including the spiritual background of the time. The central part is devoted to the artistic and iconographic analysis of works of the Master of the T ebo Altarpiece and works from his workshop and circle as well as importance in the formulation of the "beautiful style." The scholar focused also on the various hypothetical variants of the hypothetical reconstruction of the altarpiece (including drawings). The book closes with a detailed and critical overview of art historians views of the work of this medieval artist. The appendix, including illustrations, summarizing the results of restoration survey of the panel paintings by the Master of the T ebo Altarpiece, is the work of Adam Pokorny. "

Book Universal International Global

Download or read book Universal International Global written by Antje Kempe and published by Böhlau Köln. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles explores a possible alternative beginning of Global Art History and World Art Studies, two methodologies that set a worldwide focus in the study of art around the 2000s. Teaching back to earlier efforts to conceive of the international community in a less Eurocentric way, the volume proposes a tentative link between socialist internationalism as a political and cultural diplomatic principle in the Soviet Block and some new approaches to art and cultural historiography introduced there. In the "Second World", universal art history or Weltkunstgeschichte were endorsed as frameworks for the teaching and writing of art history. Authors in this book interrogate whether "world art history" as practiced by socialist scholars had aspirations and achievements comparable to today's Global Art History and World Art Studies. Or was this knowledge production in an internationalist paradigm a mere foil for communist rhetoric, behind which severed cultural relations to the Western world could also be recommenced?

Book excerpt: PAINTING-PERFORMANCE-POLITICS is the first critical and comprehensive publication on the Senegalese artist, curator and activist, El Sy (*1954), who is one of the most significant figures in African contemporary art. Not only has his innovative practice as a painter, performance artist, stage designer and curator shaped the art scene in Dakar since the late 1970s, but he is also internationally recognized as a leading protagonist of conceptual and politicized art collectives in Africa including the Laboratoire Agit Art and Tenq. This publication is the first art historical analysis that contextualizes his work and connects it to notions of resistance and activism in post-Independence Africa. It includes new essays by internationally renowned art historians, writers, and curators as well as unseen archival material. It places El Sy s activities within the framework of Senghorian post-Independence aesthetics, artists collectives in Africa, and Senegalese-German post-war relations. This publication offers a rare insight into intellectual and activist art practice in Africa prior to the "Global Turn" of 1989. "

Book Art Nouveau Prague

Download or read book Art Nouveau Prague written by Petr Wittlich and published by Prague. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Prague has become one of Europe's--and the world's--most popular tourist destinations. As in London, Paris, and Rome, visitors flock to the gorgeous buildings and monuments that grace the streets of Prague, entranced by structures ranging from Gothic and baroque to cubist and neoclassical. And while hundreds of thousands stroll over Charles Bridge and gaze up at St. Vitus Cathedral each year, far fewer venture away from the crowds to seek out the countless gems of art nouveau peppered throughout Prague. With Art Nouveau Prague, Petr Wittlich--one of Europe's leading experts on nineteenth- and twentieth-century architecture--tours those monuments and buildings of Prague that are most representative of the art nouveau movement while offering insightful commentary on each. Along the way, Wittlich visits such sites as the Municipal House, the Wilson Railway Station, the Grand Hotel Europa, and works by sculptors Frantisek Bílek, Ladislav Saloun, and Stanislav Sucharda. An introductory essay by Wittlich emphasizing the role of art nouveau within contemporary currents of modern European art accompanies more than one hundred color illustrations of some of the most stunning examples of art nouveau architecture and decoration in existence, and a detailed bibliography provides additional reading for each of the sites displayed in the book. Art Nouveau Prague is a must-have for those traveling to Prague for the first time or for anyone who appreciates or wants to learn more about art nouveau style.
