Book National Dam Safety Program Lower Tumbling Run Dam National I D Number PA 00688 Schuylkill River Basin Schuylkill County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Lower Tumbling Run Dam National I D Number PA 00688 Schuylkill River Basin Schuylkill County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by WOODWARD-CLYDE CONSULTANTS PLYMOUTH MEETING PA. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower Tumbling Run Dam, owned by the Schuylkill Haven Borough, is used as a water supply structure for the town of Schuylkill Haven and surrounding areas. Limited records indicate that the dam was constructed in 1832 and completed in 1833. The dam failed in 1850 and again in 1869. The facility is judged to be in fair condition although the embankment slopes are considered to be steep. Hydrologic and hydraulic calculations indicate that overtopping of the dam will occur at approximately 30% of the probable maximum flood. Therefore, the spillway is considered to be 'Seriously Inadequate.' The dam is classified as an 'Intermediate' structure by virtue of its forty-nine foot height, and as a 'High' hazard dam consistent with a potential at failure for extensive property damage and loss of life at the water treatment plant and further downstream at Mount Carbon, Pennsylvania. There is insufficient engineering and construction data to adequately evaluate the stability of the dam and condition of the outlet works.

Book National Dam Safety Program Opossum Lake Dam Inventory Number NDS 584 Susquehanna River Basin Cumberland County Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Opossum Lake Dam Inventory Number NDS 584 Susquehanna River Basin Cumberland County Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by BERGER ASSOCIATES INC HARRISBURG PA. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opposum Lake Dam is a zoned rolled earthfill dam with an impervious core. Construction was completed in June 1961. It was inspected 5 April 1978. This dam does not have the capacity to pass the recommended spillway design flood of one-half the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping. The spillway capacity is not considered seriously inadequate, as the project will pass the 100-year flood. A serious and persistent problem exists in a constant seepage passage over most of the length of the downstream slope of the dam. It is recommended that the owner maintain continual surveillance of the dam until the embankment has been rehabilitated to correct the serious seepage problem.

Book National Dam Safety Program Parker Dam NDI Number PA 01126 PennDER Number 17 87 Susquehanna River Basin Laurel Run Clearfield County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Parker Dam NDI Number PA 01126 PennDER Number 17 87 Susquehanna River Basin Laurel Run Clearfield County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by John A. Dziubek and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parker Dam is classified as a 'Significant' hazard - 'Small' size dam. The dam and reservoir, owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Environmental Resources, are used for recreational purposes. The dam and appurtenant structures were found to be in good overall condition at the time of the inspection. A spillway design flood (SDF) in the range of the 100-year flood to the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) is required for Parker Dam. Since the dam is in the middle of the 'Small' size category according to storage capacity, the 1/2 PMF was selected as the SDF. Hydrologic/hydraulic evaluations, performed in accordance with procedures established by the Baltimore District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, revealed that the available spillway capacity is much greater than the maximum flow expected during the SDF. Therefore, the dam will not be overtopped during the SDF and the spillways are considered to be 'adequate'.

Book National Dam Safety Program Penn Nursery Dam NDI I D Number PA 00470 Penn DER I D Number 14 117 Susquehanna River Basin Potter Run Centre County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Penn Nursery Dam NDI I D Number PA 00470 Penn DER I D Number 14 117 Susquehanna River Basin Potter Run Centre County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Bernard M. Mihalcin and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is small and its hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the facility ranges between the 1/2 PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and the PMF. Due to the high potential for damage to downstream structures and possibly loss of life, the SDF is considered to be the PMF. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store approximately 92 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. Based on screening criteria contained in the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be inadequate, but not seriously inadequate. Deficiencies noted by the inspection team included a seepage condition along a portion of the downstream embankment toe approximately 160 feet to the right of the left abutment hillside and a minor vertical crack in the concrete spillway overflow wall.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ashland Dam is a rolled earth embankment with a concrete core wall founded approximately 10 feet into rock. The embankment is approximately 69 feet high at its maximum section with a length of approximately 500 feet impounding a reservoir of approximately 331 acre-feet. The upstream slope is riprapped from the crest to the toe. The downstream slope contains a rock toe drain and is grass covered. The embankment was constructed over an existing 20 feet high dam which became the upstream toe of the new embankment. The principal intake system consists of two pipes located at the base of the dam which are used for water supply and for blow-off. The larger pipe, 16 inches I.D., feeds water into a treatment building at the downstream toe of the embankment. The smaller, 12 inch I.D., pipe also feeds water through the pumphouse and discharges into a blow-off pit approximately 40 feet below the structure. Excess water is discharged over the spillway located on the left abutment. The concrete ogee spillway is approximately 63 feet wide and discharges into the natural stream channel about 400 feet below the dam centerline.

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Brush Valley Dam NDI PA 00652 PA DER 19 3 Susquehanna River Basin South Branch Roaring Creek Columbia County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by O'BRIEN AND GERE ENGINEERS INC PHILADELPHIA PA JUSTIN AND COURTNEY DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brush Valley Dam is an earth embankment with a maximum height of about 21 feet and an approximate length of 920 feet. The top of the dam (Elev. 1128.0) is 16 feet wide. The upstream slope is 2.5 horizontal to 1 vertical(2.5H:1V), and is protected with riprap. The downstream slope is 2 horizontal to 1 vertical (2H:1V) and is surfaced with grass. An ungated overflow spillway is located about 200 feet from the right abutment. The crest of the spillway (Elev. 1123.0) is about 52 feet long. The control section is concrete, while the downstream slope is surfaced with riprap set in motar. A timber decked steel beam bridge supported by 3 intermediate piers, provides access across the spillway. A 16-inch diameter cast iron pipe is located at the base of spillway section. The upstream end of the pipe is joined to a submerged intake structure. This structure is fitted with screens to prevent debris from entering the pipe. Pipe discharge is controlled by a valve located at the downstream end of the pipe in the center of the spillway channel. The valve is operated manually and diverts flow either to a pumphouse or to the downstream channel. Based on a review of the available drawings, no upstream control valve is positioned on the pipe. The pumphouse is located at the toe of the embankment about 400 feet from the left abutment. Water is pumped from Brush Valley reservoir to a distributing reservoir about 8,000 feet to southeast. The distributing reservoir is about 600 feet above the level of Brush Valley reservoir. (Author).
