Book National Dam Safety Program Eshbaugh Martin Dam No Name 550 MO 30711 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Eshbaugh Martin Dam No Name 550 MO 30711 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Kenneth B. King and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dam is classified as being of large size. The St. Louis District Corps of Engineers has classified this dam to have a high downstream hazard potential. Failure of this dam could threaten life and property. The results of the inspection and evaluation indicate that the spillway does not meet the criteria given in the Guidelines for a dam with the size and hazard potential of No Name 550 Dam. It is calculated that the spillway can pass a 100-year flood without overtopping the dam. It was also estimated that the spillway could pass 90 percent of the PMF without overtopping the dam and without significant erosion of the embankment. However, flows greater than 32 percent of the PMF would cause significant erosion of the wing dam constriction. Adequate overflow facilities and freeboard should be provided so that the impoundment can handle the PMF without overtopping the crest and without significant erosion of the embankment or spillway. Gravel has been mined from the dam crest. This has the effect of reducing available freeboard and the dam's ability to retain runoff. This is a deficiency which should be corrected.

Book National Dam Safety Program The Place Dam MO 30996 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program The Place Dam MO 30996 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Stanley F. Gizienski and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Place Dam, Missouri Inventory No. 30996, was inspected. Based on these guidelines, the St Louis District, Corps of Engineers (SLD), has determined that this dam has a high hazard potential; we concur with this classification. The damage zone length, as determined by the St Louis District, Corps of Engineers, extends approximately two miles downstream. Within the damage zone are several occupied dwellings. The dam is classified as small due to its 180 ac-ft storage volume. The dam height is approximately 16 ft. The small dam classification includes dams having a storage volume between 50 and 1000 ac-ft, or a height between 25 and 40 ft. Our inspection and evaluation indicate the dam is in generally poor condition. The major deficiencies noted were inadequate spillway capacity, the heavy growth of trees and bushes on the dam, the presence of animal burrows and lack of maintenance and periodic inspections. Seepage and stability analyses comparable to the requirements of the 'Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams' were not available, which is considered a deficiency.

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Spring Lake Dam MO 30725 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Richard G. Berggreen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dam has been classified as unsafe, non-emergency by the St Louis District as a result of the application of the following criteria: (a) Spillway will not pass 50 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam; (b) Overtopping of the dam could result in failure of the dam; and (c) Dam failure significantly increases the hazard to loss of life downstream.

Book National Dam Safety Program Dresser Ind Old Number 1 No Name 587 Dam MO 30753 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Dresser Ind Old Number 1 No Name 587 Dam MO 30753 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Kenneth B. King and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of No Name 587 Dam is to impound tailings from a barite separation and beneficiation operation. The dam completely encircles the impoundment. Runoff from the watershed is diverted around the impoundment via diversion ditches. This dam is classified as intermediate size. The U.S. Corps of Engineers has classified this dam as having high downstream hazard potential to indicate that failure of this dam could threaten life and property. The damage zone estimated by the U.S. Corps of Engineers extends approximately eight miles downstream of the dam. Information provided by the Corps of Engineers and the inspection indicates that about five dwellings, two railroad bridges, a highway bridge and the town of Mineral Point with about eighty dwellings are within this damage zone. The results of the inspection indicate the absence of facilities for discharging floodwater and inadequate freeboard and that the dam does not meet the criteria given in the Guidelines for a structure with the size and hazard potential of No Name 587 Dam. As an intermediate size dam with a high hazard potential, the Guidelines specify that the discharge capacity and/or storage capacity should be capable of safely handling the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the crest.

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Dresser Number 4 Dam MO 30474 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Kenneth B. King and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of Dresser No. 4 Dam is to impound tailings from a barite separation and beneficiation operation. The dam completely encircles the impoundment except for a 300-foot wide breach at the north (up-stream) end where the structure failed in 1975. The dam cannot retain water in its present state because of this breach in the dam. This dam is classified as large. The U.S. Corps of Engineers has classified it as having a high downstream hazard potential to indicate that failure of this dam could threaten life and property. The damage zone, estimated by the U.S. Corps of Engineers, extends about 6 miles downstream of the dam. Since the embankment cannot retain water, the overtopping potential of the embankment was not analyzed. Instead, studies were made to estimate the amount of flow that could occur in the diversion ditch (located to the west and south of the impoundment) under different flood conditions. It was calculated that the diversion ditch could pass a 100-year flood probably without significant erosion of the ditch or adjacent embankment toe. However, it was estimated that the ditch cannot pass 50 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without significant erosion of the ditch and adjacent embankment materials.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of field inspection and evaluation of the Pfizer Inc. Dam. It was prepared under the National Program of Inspection of Non-Federal Dams. This dam has been classified as unsafe, non-emergency by the St. Louis District as a result of: the spillway can only pass 9 percent of the PMF without significant erosion of the spillway or embankment; erosion of the open channel spillway through the embankment near the left abutment is taking place in the upstream direction and is encroaching on the toe of the dam; and excessively steep downstream slope. Book National Dam Safety Program Henpeck Hollow Dam MO 31256 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Henpeck Hollow Dam MO 31256 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Stanley F. Gizienski and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St. Louis District, Corps of Engineers (SLD), has classified this dam as having a high hazard potential; we concur with this classification. The estimated damage zone length, as determined by the SLD, extends approximately four miles downstream of the dam. Within this estimated damage zone are a dam and reservoir (MO 31255), several dwellings and miscellaneous buildings. The dam is classified as small due to its approximately 60 ac-ft storage volume. The dam is approximately 24 ft in height. The small dam classification includes dams between 25 and 40 ft in height, or having storage volumes between 50 and 1000 ac-ft. Based on the distances to the nearest occupied dwellings, over 2.5 miles, the width of the valley downstream of the dam, on the order of 400 feet or more, and the relatively small impoundment volume, 50 percent of the PMF is recommended as the spillway design flood. The inspection and evaluation indicate the dam is in a generally poor condition. Primary reasons for this judgement are: the inadequate spillway capacity, the passage of discharge from the auxiliary spillway over the downstream slope, partial blockage of the main spillway by a beaver dam, lack of maintenance and lack of periodic inspections.

Book National Dam Safety Program Black Tailings Dam MO 31154 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Black Tailings Dam MO 31154 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Kenneth B. King and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of field inspection and evaluation of the Black Tailings Dam. This dam has been classified as unsafe, emergency by the St. Louis District as a result of the application of the following criteria: (1) This dam which has no spillway will not contain a 10-year frequency flood without overtopping occurring. The storage capacity of this dam is, therefore, considered to be unusually small and seriously inadequate; (2) Overtopping could result in dam failure; and (3) Dam failure would significantly increase the hazard to life and property downstream.

Book National Dam Safety Program Old Washer Number 1 Dam MO 30478 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Old Washer Number 1 Dam MO 30478 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Kenneth B. King and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the inspection was to assess the general condition of the dam with respect to safety. The assessment is based upon an evaluation of the available data, a visual inspection, and an evaluation of the hydrology and hydraulics of the site in order to determine if the dam poses hazards to human life or property. The dam provides impoundment for barite ore tailings. The impoundment is inactive, but tailings disposal activities may resume in the near future. The results of the inspection and evaluation indicate that the spillways do not meet the criteria given in the guidelines for a dam with the size and hazard potential of Old Washer No. 1 Dam. As an intermediate size dam with a high hazard potential, the Guidelines specify that the discharge capacity and/or storage capacity should be capable of safely handling the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the crest. The PMF is the flood that may be expected from the most severe combination of critical meteorologic and hydrologic conditions that are reasonably possible in the region.

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Pierce Lake Dam MO 30999 Mississippi Kaskaskia St Louis Basin Washington County Missouri Phase I Inspection Report written by Richard G. Berggreen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pierce Lake Dam, Missouri Inventory Number 30999, was inspected. This dam is classified as small due to its 37 ft height and storage capacity of 681 ac-ft. A small dam is one which is less than 40 ft in height and impounds less than 1000 ac-ft of storage. The St. Louis District, Corps of Engineers, has classified this dam high hazard; we concur with this classification. The estimated damage zone, as determined by the St. Louis District, Corps of Engineers, extends approximately five miles downstream. The community of Richwoods and several other occupied structures are located within the estimated damage zone. The inspection and evaluation indicate that the dam is in generally poor condition. Specific deficiencies that were noted are insufficient spillway capacity, very steep downstream slope, high erodibility of the embankment materials and lack of maintenance and periodic inspections. Also deemed as a deficiency is the lack of any stability or seepage analyses.
