Book excerpt: Pecks Pond Dam is located on Bush Kill Creek in Porter Township, Pike County, Pennsylvania. The facility is situated within 1000 feet of Pennsylvania Route 402, about 5 miles south of Interstate 84 and about 25 miles north of the city of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Observations made during the visual inspection indicate the embankment is in good condition. No evidence of seepage through the downstream embankment face, sloughing, excessive settlement, animal burrows, or signs of major maintenance neglect were observed. Minor erosion along the upstream embankment face and behind the upstream portion of the right spillway wingwall were noted, but, are not considered significant at this time. Provisions for erosion protection along the upstream embankment slope were apparently not included in the original design or in the design for the 1934 modifications. Minor cracks observed along the concrete cap that partially covers the crest were recently filled and adequately repaired. Some of the dense brush located along the downstream embankment toe had to be cut back by the inspection team in order to achieve a clear view of this area. It is suggested that control of this excess vegetation be specifically included as part of future routine maintenance.

Book excerpt: South Pond Dam is located on a branch of Hornbecks Creek in Delaware Township, Pike County, Pennsylvania. The facility is located about 1,000 feet south of Wild Acres Lake and less than five miles east of U.S. Route 209 which parallels the Delaware River. Observations made during the visual inspection reveal the embankment is generally well maintained and presently in fair condition. No evidence of seepage through the downstream embankment face, sloughing, animal burrows, or excess embankment settlement was noted. Some minor erosion was observed along the downstream embankment toe near the right abutment where the spillway discharge channel abuts the embankment. The erosion is due, in part, to the design of the channel, which is inadequately sized and, in part, to the lack of adequate slope protection along the channel sidewalls and downstream embankment toe. The condition of the incised area in the vicinity of the outlet conduit was observed to be somewhat saturated and covered with swamp-like vegetation. This condition may be due either to poor channel drainage or leakage along the outlet conduit. This is not considered to be significant at this time, but should continue to be observed. In addition, the steep slopes in this area apparently make routine maintenance difficult. As a result, the area around the outlet conduit has been somewhat neglected.

Under existing conditions, spillway discharges are controlled by the existence of a township-owned roadway embankment and culvert that is situated about 100 feet downstream of the spillway weir.

The facility is an integral part of the surrounding development known as Wild Acres. The community is nestled in the mountains of Pike County less than five miles west of U.S. Route 209 which parallels the Delaware River in this area. Observations made during the visual inspection indicate the embankment and adjacent dike are in good condition. Heavy brush growth and small trees were observed along the embankment crest and upstream face. No evidence of seepage through the downstream embankment face, excess settlement, sloughing, erosion or animal burrows was encountered by the inspection team. Some rock slope protection has been displaced immediately adjacent the spillway right wingwall, leaving small bare areas on both the upstream and downstream embankment faces. The top of the concrete corewall exhibits excessive cracking and spalling along its entire length except for that portion associated with the dike along the right abutment which is in relatively good condition.

Book excerpt: Lower Hemlock Dam is a 420 foot long earthfill structure with a maximum embankment height of 15 feet. Plate IV, Appendix E, indicates a concrete core wall along the centerline of dam. The top of the dam is used as a public roadway and has a bituminous surface. The spillway is located near the left abutment of the embankment. A fish guard-screen is attached to the upstream side of the concrete ogee section. The roadway crosses the spillway discharge channel immediately downstream from the weir (Photograph 7, Appendix C). The bridge is a concrete slab deck structure supported on two piers and two abutment walls. The outlet control structure is constructed differently from that shown on Plate IV, Appendix E. It actually consists of a valve chamber with the valve located on the inside of the upstream wall. Water is discharged directly into the valve chamber and flows from there through a 24inch diameter outlet pipe under the embankment to the downstream toe. The valve chamber is covered with a large overhanging concrete slab and is accessible by a footbridge from the crest of the dam. (Author).

It is 35 feet high at its maximum section and 685 feet long. The main spillway is located at the maximum section of the dam. It consists of a reinforced concrete riser structure near the upstream toe of the dam, a 24-inch diameter conduit, and a concrete outlet structure at the downstream toe of the dam. The auxiliary spillway is an excavated, trapezoidal channel at the left abutment of the dam. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations, past operational performance, and according to criteria established for these studies, Maple Lake Dam is judged to be in good condition. Based on existing conditions, the main and auxiliary spillways will pass an approximate minimum of 48 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF before overtopping of the dam occurs. No stability problems were evident for the embankment at the time of the visual inspection, but a potential hazard to stability exists due to erosion that might occur when there is flow in the auxiliary spillway.
