Book excerpt: Macham Dam is an earth embankment approximately 19 feet high and 575 feet long, including spillway. The facility is provided with an uncontrolled, rectangular, concrete chute channel spillway located at the left abutment. The spillway is constructed with a 75-foot long, broad crested weir having a 35-foot breadth. Drawdown capability is provided by means of an 18-inch diameter reinforced concrete conduit controlled at the inlet by an 18-inch diameter sluice gate. Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in fair condition. The facility will pass and/or store only about 43 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. (Author).

Book National Dam Inspection Program Ridgebury Lake Dam NDI I D Number PA 00727 PennDER I D Number 8 57 Susquehanna River Basin Tributary to Fall Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Ridgebury Lake Dam NDI I D Number PA 00727 PennDER I D Number 8 57 Susquehanna River Basin Tributary to Fall Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Bernard M. Michalcin and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the facility is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is intermediate and its hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the facility is the PMF (Probable Maximum Flood). Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store only about 45 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. A breach analysis indicates that failure under less than 1/2 PMF conditions could lead to increased downstream damage and potential for loss of life. Thus, based on screening criteria provided in the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be seriously inadequate and the facility unsafe, non-emergency. Calculations also indicate that if the spillway were constructed in accordance with available desing drawings, the facility could pass and/or store approximately 63 percent of the PMF.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Sugar Creek Dam NDI ID Number PA 728 DER ID Number 8 53 Susquehanna River Basin South Branch Sugar Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Sugar Creek Dam NDI ID Number PA 728 DER ID Number 8 53 Susquehanna River Basin South Branch Sugar Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by R. Jeffrey Kimball and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of Sugar Creek Dam is based upon visual observations made at the time of inspection, review of available records and data, hydraulic and hydrologic computations and past operational performance. The inspection and review of Sugar Creek Dam did not reveal any problems which would require emergency action. The dam appears to be in fair condition and in need of minor maintenance. The Sugar Creek Dam is a high hazard-small size dam. The spillway design flood (SDF) for a dam of this size and classification is 1/2 PMF to PMF. The PMF has been selected as the spillway design flood based on the downstream potential for loss of life. The spillway and reservoir are considered capable of controlling approximately 50% of the PMF. The 0.1 feet of overtopping of the embankment crest during the 1/2 PMF event for a duration of 1 hour was not considered sufficient to cause failure of the structure. Based on the judgement of the evaluating engineer, the location and duration of the overtopping as well as the existence of a concrete curb on the upstream and downstream edge of the embankment crest would sufficiently contain the overtopping to the spillway area minimizing damage to the embankment and spillway. The spillway is considered inadequate.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Totem Dam NDI I D Number PA 00042 PennDER I D Number 8 8 Susquehanna River Basin Camps Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Totem Dam NDI I D Number PA 00042 PennDER I D Number 8 8 Susquehanna River Basin Camps Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Bernard M. Mihalcin and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, the dam is considered to be in fair condition. The size classification of the facility is small and its hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the facility ranges between the 1/2-PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and the PMF. Due to the high potential for damage to downstream structures and loss of life that could be associated with a sudden embankment breach, the SDF is considered to be the PMF. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store only two percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. The embankment has, in fact, been overtopped at least three times in the past decade. However, due to its unusual configuration, damage has been limited to scouring of the embankment and downstream roadway. Breach analyses performed in this study indicate that there are conditions for floods of less than 1/2-PMF magnitude during which the embankment could possibly fail and result in an increased potential for damage and loss of life downstream. Thus, the spillway system is considered to be seriously inadequate and the facility unsafe, non-emergency. (Author).

Book National Dam Inspection Program Saxe Pond Dam NDI I D Number PA 729 DER ID Number 8 10 Susquehanna River Basin North Branch Mehoopany Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Jeffrey Kimball and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is located approximately 2 miles northwest of the Village of Colley, Wilmot Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The inspection consisted of: Visual inspection of the retaining structure, abutments and toe; Examination of the spillway facilities, exposed portion of any outlet works and other appurtenant works; Observations affecting the runoff potential of the drainage basin; and Evaluation of the downstream area hazard potential. The dam appears to be in good condition and adequately maintained. From a brief survey conducted during the inspection, it was noted that the low spot on the crest of the dam exits at the top left edge of the spillway crest. It was observed during the inspection that a new concrete cap had been placed on the structure. The concrete appeared to be in good condition. The dam was constructed with dry rubble masonry with an upstream earthfill. No concrete exists on the downstream face of the structure or on the bench located along the downstream face of the structure. The rubble masonry appeared to be in good condition and well maintained.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Galvin Pond Dam NDI Number PA 00602 PennDER Number 8 63 Susquehanna River Basin West Branch of Trout Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Galvin Pond Dam NDI Number PA 00602 PennDER Number 8 63 Susquehanna River Basin West Branch of Trout Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galvin Pond Dam is owned by Mr. Walter Kirby and is classified as a 'Significant' hazard - 'Small' size dam. The dam was found to be in fair overall condition at the time of inspection. Hydraulic/hydrologic evaluation, performed in accordance with procedures established by the Baltimore District, Corps of Engineers, revealed that the spillway capacity is less than the peak inflow to the impoundment during the 100-year flood. A spillway design flood (SDF) in the range of the 100-year flood to the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) is required for Galvin Pond Dam. Because the dam is on the low end of the 'Small' size category in terms of storage capacity and height, the 100-year flood was chosen as the SDF. The spillway is therefore considered 'Inadequate.' Several items of remedial work should be immediately initiated by the owner. These include: (1) Develop remedial measures to ensure that the dam is not overtopped by the 100-year flood; (2) Repair the two 12-inch steel pipes, fill the embankment to original crest elevation and reseed with grass; (3) Cut the trees and brush on the dam; and (4) Provide means to draw down the reservoir during an emergency.

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program PA 467 Dam NDI I D Number PA 00054 DER I D Number 58 131 SCS I D Number PA 467 Susquehanna County Commissioners Susquehanna River Basin Tributary to Martins Creek Susquehanna County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Frederick Futchko and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam consists of a zoned, earthfill embankment that is 590 feet long and 52 feet high at its maximum section. The main spillway is a drop spillway located near the right abutment of the dam. It consists of a concrete riser connected to a 30-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe under the embankment. The auxiliary spillway is an excavated channel along the left abutment of the dam. It is a grass-linked excavation in earth. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, PA-467 Dam is judged to be in good condition. The existing spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood(PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. There is a slope stability analysis for the embankment, and it indicates that the embankment has adequate factors of safety. There is no evidence of significant problems threatening the embankment.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Maple Lake Dam NDI ID Number PA 01026 DER ID Number 57 38 Susquehanna River Basin Branch of Blackwater Run Sullivan County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Maple Lake Dam NDI ID Number PA 01026 DER ID Number 57 38 Susquehanna River Basin Branch of Blackwater Run Sullivan County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maple Lake Dam is an earthfill embankment 14.4 feet high and 283 feet long, excluding spillway. The emergency spillway is located at the left abutment, consisting of an earth channel having a trapezoidal cross section. The bottom width of the spillway at the reservoir outlet is 56 feet. A service spillway, consisting of a 12-inch riser pipe and an 8-inch diameter outlet pipe, is located approximately 100 feet from the right abutment. The outlet works was reported to consist of an 8-inch diameter asbestos cement pipe, extending upstream of the riser pipe to the reservoir and terminating with two sections of an 8-inch diameter vitrified clay pipe, having a concrete plug at the inlet. Based on visual inspection, the Maple Lake Dam is judged to be in good condition. Under the present conditions, the spillway will pass approximately 37 percent of the PMF. Should the top of the dam be restored to its design elevation, the spillway could pass the SDF without overtopping the dam.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Number 5 Dam NDI ID Number PA 00375 DER ID Number 35 22 Susquehanna River Basin Stafford Meadow Brook Lackawanna County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Number 5 Dam NDI ID Number PA 00375 DER ID Number 35 22 Susquehanna River Basin Stafford Meadow Brook Lackawanna County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Albert Charles Hooke and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations, and past operational performance, and according to criteria established for these studies, No. 5 Dam is judged to be unsafe, nonemergency, because the spillway capacity is rated as seriously inadequate. The spillway can pass 29 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the dam. Failure of the dam would cause an increase hazard to loss of life downstream. As a whole, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. The spillway gravity weir does not have any significant deviations from the guidelines for stability, since the toe pressure is well below the allowable. There is no evidence of instability on the embankment.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Pomeroy Memorial Reservoir Dam NDI ID Number PA 40 DER ID Number 8 2 Susquehanna River Basin West Branch Sugar Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Pomeroy Memorial Reservoir Dam NDI ID Number PA 40 DER ID Number 8 2 Susquehanna River Basin West Branch Sugar Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by R. Jeffrey Kimball and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pomeroy Memorial Reservoir Dam appears to be in poor condition and poorly maintained. The concrete on the upstream slope of the dam is in a deteriorated condition as is the concrete in the spillway section. The spillway retaining walls are visibly deteriorated and a section of the right spillway wingwall has cracked and fallen away from the structure. Maintenance of the dam and operating facilities is considered poor. The drainline valves have not been operated in the recent past. Pomeroy Memorial Reservoir Dam is a high hazard-small size dam. The recommended spillway design flood (SDF) for a dam of this size and classification is in the range of 1/2 PMF to PMF. Based on the downstream potential for loss of life, the spillway design flood has been selected as the PMF. The spillway and reservoir are capable of controlling approximately 9% of the PMF without overtopping the embankment low spot. If the low spot elevation were to be filled to an elevation consistent with the remaining portion of the embankment crest the spillway and reservoir would be capable of controlling approximately 20% of the PMF without overtopping the embankment. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed inadequate.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Hawk Mountain Dam NDI ID Number PA 01129 DER ID Number 54 180 Susquehanna River Basin Lower Little Swatara Schuylkill County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Hawk Mountain Dam NDI ID Number PA 01129 DER ID Number 54 180 Susquehanna River Basin Lower Little Swatara Schuylkill County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by GANNETT FLEMING CORDDRY AND CARPENTER INC HARRISBURG PA. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is prepared under guidance contained in the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams, for Phase I Investigations. The purpose of a Phase I investigation is to identify expeditiously those dams which may pose hazards to human life or property. The assessment of the general conditions of the dam is based upon available data and visual inspections.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Cooks Pond Dam NDI I D PA 0041 DER I D 008 035 Susquehanna River Basin Tributary of Beaver Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Cooks Pond Dam NDI I D PA 0041 DER I D 008 035 Susquehanna River Basin Tributary of Beaver Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by D'APPOLONIA CONSULTING ENGINEERS INC PITTSBURGH PA. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Cooks Pond Dam is considered to be unsafe/nonemergency due to the seriously inadequate spillway capacity and structural deficiencies. The condition of the embankment is considered to be poor. The dam is old and in a general state of disrepair. The crest of the dam is irregular and the center of the dam appears to have settled. The stone wall along the downstream toe is irregular and bulging. The toe of the wall is swampy, caused by a general underseepage. In view of these observations, the overall stability of the dam is considered to be questionable, requiring further investigation and implementation of measures to improve the stability of the dam. The spillway capacity was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and was found to pass less than 10 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment. This capacity is less than the required spillway capacity of one-half PMF relative to the size and hazard classification of the dam. Because the spillway capacity is less than 50 percent of the PMF and it is estimated that failure of the dam due to overtopping would significantly increase the downstream hazard of loss of life compared to that which would exist just before failure, the spillway is considered to be seriously inadequate, and consequently the condition of the dam is considered to be unsafe/nonemergency.
