Book National Dam Inspection Program Gilkerson Dam NDI Number PA 01122 PennDER Number 65 8 Ohio River Basin Unnamed Tributary to Beaver Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Gilkerson Dam NDI Number PA 01122 PennDER Number 65 8 Ohio River Basin Unnamed Tributary to Beaver Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania written by BAKER (MICHAEL) JR INC BEAVER PA. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilkerson Dam is classified as a 'Small' size - 'High' hazard dam. The dam was found to be in very poor overall condition at the time of the inspection. Hydraulic/hydrologic evaluations, performed in accordance with procedures established by the Baltimore District, Corps of Engineers, for Phase I Inspection Reports, revealed that the spillway will pass approximately 40 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) before overtopping will occur. A spillway design flood (SDF) in the range of the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) to the PMF is required for Gilkerson Dam. The 1/2 PMF was chosen because the dam is on the low and end of the 'Small' size category. Because the total duration and maximum depth of overtopping during the 1/2 PMF (1.5 hours and 0.21 foot, respectively) did not meet the estimated limiting criteria for failure of the dam (2 hours and 1.0 foot), the spillway is assessed as 'inadequate' but not 'seriously inadequate'. It is recommended that the owner immediately initiate an engineering study to develop recommendations for remedial measures to reduce the overtopping potential of the dam.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Beaver Dam NDI I D Number PA 00453 Pennder I D Number 65 7 Ohio River Basin Beaver Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Beaver Dam NDI I D Number PA 00453 Pennder I D Number 65 7 Ohio River Basin Beaver Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by GAI CONSULTANTS INC MONROEVILLE PA. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaver Dam is an earth embankment approximately 32 feet high and 385 feet long (including spillway). The dam is constructed with a masonry spillway located about 35 feet left of the right abutment. The crest of the spillway is 100 feet long and about 11 feet below the top of its wingwalls. Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is consisered to be in poor condition. The defunct facility has been essentially abandoned since 1952 and its reservoir is sediment filled. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate that the facility is capable of passing and/or storing only 36 percent of the PMF without embankment overtopping. Structural deficiencies noted by the inspection team included substantial embankment overgrowth, an access road cut through the embankment near the left abutment, cracking of the masonry spillway wingwalls, and a sediment filled reservoir. Due to the seriously inadequate spillway and overall poor condition, the facility is considered unsafe but non-emergency as failure is not considered imminent.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Unnamed Tributary to Harmon Creek NDI Number PA 01125 PennDER Number 63 84 SCS Number PA 480 Ohio River Basin Washington County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Unnamed Tributary to Harmon Creek NDI Number PA 01125 PennDER Number 63 84 SCS Number PA 480 Ohio River Basin Washington County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by John A. Dziubek and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PA 480 was designed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service (SCS) for floodwater detention. The total length of the dam is 555 feet, including the emergency spillway on the right abutement; the maximum height of the dam is 66 feet. The principal spillway is a drop-inlet structure consisting of a two-stage reinforced concrete riser connected to a 30 inch diameter reinforced concrete outlet pipe. The low-level inlet on the concrete riser is a 9 inch high by 15 inch wide orifice; this inlet maintains the normal pool level. There is 25.1 acre-feet of storage at normal pool level, all of which is reserved for a 50-year accumulation of sediment. Hydraulic/hydrologic evaluations, revealed that the spillway will pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the dam. A spillway design flood (SDF) in the range of the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) to the PMF is required for PA 480. The 1/2 PMF was selected as the SDF. The spillway is therefore considered to be 'adequate'.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Ligonier Dam NDI Number PA 00477 PennDER Number 65 117 Ohio River Basin South Fort of Mill Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Ligonier Dam NDI Number PA 00477 PennDER Number 65 117 Ohio River Basin South Fort of Mill Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by John A. Dziubek and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ligonier Dam (Ligonier Township Reservoir) is classified as a 'High' hazard - 'Small' size dam. The dam and reservoir, owned by the Ligonier Township Municipal Water Authority, are used for water supply. The dam was found to be in good overall condition at the time of inspection. Hydraulic/hydrologic evaluations, performed in accordance with procedures established by the Baltimore District, Corps of Engineers, for Phase I Inspection Reports, revealed that the spillway will pass approximately 35 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) before overtopping will occur. A spillway design flood (SDF) in the range of the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) to the PMF is required for Ligonier Dam. Because of the relative small size of the impoundment the 1/2 PMF was chosen as the SDF. It was determined that during the 1/2 PMF the low area on the embankment would be overtopped by a depth of 0.66 foot and a duration of 4.50 hours. Because a limiting criteria of one foot or greater depth of overtopping and a duration of 2 hours was estimated for this dam, it was concluded that a dam failure during the 1/2 PMF is unlikely to occur.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Breskin Dam Number 2 NDI Number PA 00485 PennDER Number 65 134 Ohio River Basin Fourmile Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Breskin Dam Number 2 NDI Number PA 00485 PennDER Number 65 134 Ohio River Basin Fourmile Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by James P. Hannan and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a review of available design information and visual observations of conditions as they existed on the date of the field inspection, the general condition of the Breskin Dam No. 2 is considered to be good. The structure is classified as an 'intermediate' size, 'high' hazard dam and the Spillway Design Flood is the Probable Maximum Flood. The spillway capacity was found to be 'inadequate' because the non-overtopping flood discharge capacity, as estimated using the HEC-1 computer program, was found to be 42 percent of the PMF. The spillway is not 'seriously inadequate', because in the opinion of the evaluating engineer, the dam will not fail at 50 percent of the PMF.

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Four Mile Run Dam NDS I D Number PA 00457 PennDer I D Number 65 126 Ohio River Basin Four Mile Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Bernard M. Mihalcin and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visual inspection, operational history, and hydrologic/hydraulic analysis indicate the facility is in good condition. It is recommended that the owner: (a) Immediately fill and seal all cracks within the interior of the outlet conduit. (b) Specifically address the seepage condition observed to the right of the spillway in all future inspections and note any turbidity or changes in the rate of flow. (c) Re-evaluate and revise the present standard flood emergency procedures in accordance with, but not limited to, the following items: (1) Include a definite procedure of notifying downstream residents of a possible emergency. (2) Provide for an alternate means of communication in the event telephone lines become inoperative. (3) Provide for around-the-clock surveillance of the facility during periods of unusually heavy precipitation. (d) Provide additional riprap protection along the right sidewall of the spillway approach channel.

Hannan and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a review of available design information and visual observations of conditions as they existed on the date of the field inspections, the general condition of the Kennametal Reservoir Dam is considered to be good. The structure is classified as a 'small' size, 'high' hazard dam. Corps of Engineers guidelines recommend 1/2 to one times the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) for ('small' size, 'high' hazard dams. Kennametal Reservoir Dam's Spillway Design Flood is 1/2 the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Spillway capacity is 'inadequate' because the non-overtopping flood discharge capacity, was estimated using the HEC-1 computer program, was found to be 13 percent of the PMF. The spillway is not 'seriously inadequate' because failure of the structure would not significantly increase the flood stage and risk of loss of life downstream. The visual inspection indicated minor deficiencies which are considered correctable.

Book National Dam Inspection Program PA 657 Dam Acme Dam NDI I D Number PA 00828 PennDER I D Number 65 133 Ohio River Basin Jacobs Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program PA 657 Dam Acme Dam NDI I D Number PA 00828 PennDER I D Number 65 133 Ohio River Basin Jacobs Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Bernard M. Mihalcin and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, past performance, and available engineering data, the facility is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is intermediate and the hazard classification is considered to be high. The emergency spillway is capable of discharging the peak inflow resulting from a storm of PMF intensity and is, therefore, considered adequate. It is recommended that the owner: (a) Repair the damaged pond drain gate control and replace the missing manhole cover atop the service spillway riser. Consideration should be given to redesigning the gate control mechanism to protect it from future vandalism. (b) Consult with the U.S.D.A., Soil Conservation Service, to assess the erosion on the upstream slope in the area of the service spillway riser and implement any remedial measures deemed necessary. (c) Curtail the unauthorized vehicular travel across the embankment and repair and reseed any damaged (bare) areas. If control of unauthorized travel is not practical, some provision should be made to protect the embankment from rutting and erosion by placing a layer of gravel or stone across the crest. (d) Develop a formal operation and maintenance manual to ensure the continued proper care of the facility. In addition, a formal warning system should be implemented which provides detailed procedures to protect the lives and property of downstream residents. Included in the plan should be provisions for around-the-clock surveillance of the facility during periods of unusually heavy percipitation.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Beaver Run Dam NDI Number PA 484 Ohio River Basin Beaver Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Beaver Run Dam NDI Number PA 484 Ohio River Basin Beaver Run Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by GAI CONSULTANTS INC MONROEVILLE PA. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual examination, as well as available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in good condition. Hydrologic and hydraulic calculations indicate that the facility can pass and/or store the flow resulting from the PMF. Additional calculations, however, indicated that if not properly vented, the morning glory spillway may pass through a period when a make and break siphoning action would attend flow. This action would be accompanied by surges at the inlet and outlet ends and by thumping and vibrations within the outlet. Since no design reports are available for the appurtenances, it is not known if this condition was considered during the design. Discussions with owners representatives and local residents also indicated that remedial repair to the outlet works was required at least once and possibly twice since construction. Consequently, it is recommended that a detailed hydraulic and hydrologic analysis be performed to accurately assess the present condition of the outlet and to make any modifications deemed necessary to insure that the outlet will perform adequately under all possible operating conditions.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Upper Bridgeport Dam NDI I D Number PA 00465 Pender I D Number 65 6 Ohio River Basin Jacobs Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Upper Bridgeport Dam NDI I D Number PA 00465 Pender I D Number 65 6 Ohio River Basin Jacobs Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by GAI CONSULTANTS INC MONROEVILLE PA. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Bridgeport Dam is an earth embankment approximately 1,020 feet long (including spillways), with a maximum height of 21 feet. The embankment is divided into three sections by two spillways. The service spillway is a combination masonry and concrete trapezoidal-shaped weir structure with a 101-foot long crest located about 140 feet from the left abutment. The emergency spillway is a concrete broad-crested weir structure with a 250-foot crest length located about 320 feet to the left of the right abutment. Based on the visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in poor condition. The facility has been essentially abandoned by the current owner and has not been in operation or maintained since 1972. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate that the facility can accommodate approximately 20 percent of the PMF before overtopping of the embankment occurs. Since the dam's hazard rating is high, and embankment failure would result in an increase in the potential for loss of life downstrean from the dam, the present spillway system is assessed as being seriously inadequate.

Hannan and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on review of available design information and visual observations of conditions as they existed on the date of the field inspections, the general condition of Baggaley Dam is considered to be poor. The poor assessment is based on the inability to closely observe the downstream slopes, potential stability problems of the abutments and the condition of the principal spillway. The structure is classified as a 'small' size, 'high' hazard dam. Corps of Engineer guidelines recommend 1/2 to one times the Probable Maximum Flood for 'small' size 'high' hazrad dams. Baggaley Dam's Spillway Design Flood is 1/2 the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Spillway capacity is 'inadequate' because the non-overtopping flood discharge capacity, as estimated using the HEC-1 computer program, was found to be 10 percent of the PMF. The spillway is not 'seriously inadequate' because failure of the structure would not significntly increase the flood stage and risk of loss of life downstream.
